Well I can only imagine the shit storm that would have occurred if Trump had said something so stupid, especially if the races were reversed. Maybe some fake black panther supporters at the next Bernie rally?
Another broken clock moment for Nagle. Yes, here I agree. What with the decline in the price of oil, some might think getting more natural gas is not a priority. but of course fracking was one of the big reasons for that decline, and gas still burns cleaner than oil. But, it DOES need to be regulated, meaning making sure the water table is not affected by fracking, and that sort of thing. On your larger point this is what I don't get about Sanders fans. It's as if they are unaware we live in a capitalist country. You can be against the political influence the big banks have, and be concerned about their proven ability to destroy our economy. But it would help if every once in awhile Bernie mentioned that private property and free enterprise are in fact good things. And against the auto bailout - I did not know that before this weekend. One of the best things the government has done in the last 8 years, a proud achievement of the Obama Admin, and he was against it?
Truth be told I think I probably agree with you a bit more than not, but disagree often enough. Nothing wrong with my clock.
Notice the difference in the discussion this morning? Instead of the bullshit insults and bickering, we're discussing actual policy points instead for better or worse. GOP? You guys need to step your game up and start with discussions instead of insults.
I mean this is obviously a function of trumpertantrum being involved. Remember the GOP debate without him?
Yeah.. It was actually worth listening to for facts and positions. Now? The GOP has allowed Trump to turn the debates into a sideshow. Wouldn't it be great if the Moderators at these debates could simply turn off all other mics except the one to whom the question was asked? Another idea would be to admonish the juvenile audience that these debates aren't HS football games and to give the entire debate process some respect by keeping their mouths mostly shut until the debate is on break or concluded.
Hopefully CNN this week avoids the Fox debate disaster and goes facts/positions/policy the entire debate.
Look up Oklahoma and earthquakes. You'll find a lot of interesting info and a very frustrated Republican administration there that is dealing with reality on the issue.
We have fracking just south of here and there have been a number of earthquakes over the past few years since it began. Hard for me to believe it's a coincidence.
Bernie was excellent last night. It was the first time you could sense that the African American community were listening to him. His main issue is name recognition amongst te minorities. Curious to see what happens here on the 15th
there's some debate about whether or not the increased amount of earthquakes in Oklahoma has been caused by fracking. I support fracking but I am not naive. It probably is the reason for the earthquakes. However, Oklahoma (&Texas) is different than other places of the country where fracking is used in that the massive amounts of wastewater they use in the fracking process are injected back underground. In Pennsylvania, for example, they require the operators to recycle that wastewater. They haven't had an issue with earthquakes at all. Like any technology that is new in application, we find out what we need to regulate or where we need technological improvements. That's where we are with fracking. But our politicians flatly stating "NO!" to fracking just because of this and just dismissing without considering who, what and why, is to me just incompetence. To me I imagine like this. When they first started installing the electrical grid, people died installing them, birds died, they were ugly, there were questions about people living under them and how it screwed up their brains. But instead of impeding progress by looking at these things and saying "absolutely not" and banning the adoption... they improved safety regulations, they advanced technologies over time, etc... and it became a way of life. now it would seem silly to suggest we get rid of power lines for the dangers.
The numbers in Oklahoma have gone from low teens a year to more than 900 a year over the last 3 decades and the quakes tend to be centered around wastewater disposal sites. They're very frustrated with the issue because the GOP and Big Oil spent 2 decades telling people not to worry about it in a very oil-centric economy and now the science is becoming indisputable and they've had to shift gears in a hurry to prevent a catastrophe. This is a case study on what will be happening with global warming in less than a decade now. That's accelerating also, despite the attempts to portray it as slacking off and we're going to have enormous effects that hit exactly the people that are being conned into disbelieving at the moment.
The other problem though with fracking is that it is another way to release stored carbon into the atmosphere. That's the insidious effect. We've already got too much CO2 in the atmosphere and we're cutting forests down all around the equator and the oceans are warming rapidly because they're the default carbon sink when too much is in the atmosphere and the other natural carbon sinks are being destroyed. Then we get the really bad effects as warming begins to naturally release CO2 and CH4 from deep sinks that are inaccessible as long as the temperature remains below a certain threshold. Permafrost and deep ocean sinks contain more CO2 and CH4 than man can possibly produce, but if we get the process accelerating by continuing to warm the atmosphere we're going to wind up with 100% sea level in just a few centuries and 100% sea level is close to Waterworld. Not quite at that level but close enough that your house is going to be under a hundred feet of water unless you're significantly above sea level right now.
yes thats another concern but man if that's a reason for banning fracking you better go after the entire oil & gas industry. As CO2 emissions from fracking is nothing compared to CO2 emissions from refineries.. or, worse, from small leaks in our nation's 200,000 mile gas pipeline
It's the principle of the thing. If you're in an overheated house, starting a small fire in a fireplace isn't a total disaster but why would you do that when you have to get the house cooled down a bit or it's going to spontaneously combust on you at some point? I've gotta go back to the basic question here: don't any of the bigwigs in the energy industry have grandkids? Leaving them mega-rich in a nasty environment is a lot worse than leaving them wealthy in a healthy world.
