Since when did this website become so excessively sarcastic? You disagree and I respect that. Silly comments aren't needed.
The crazy thing is we could of had him for a 2nd rounder 2 years ago... No way we give up 2 1st rounders for him.. I'd rather give a shot to RG3 with no risks only potential for rewards!
I'm not suggesting because I'm not a big Cousins fan, however the fact that the Skins tagged him at $19.95M does not mean he will get a multi-year deal in that range. My guess is he'd jump all over a 6 year $84M deal ($14M a year on the cap) with $30M guaranteed. Again, I'm not suggesting this but if Cousins is a real franchise QB prospect you jump at the chance to give up a 20 + random 1st round pick to lock him up cheap until he's 30. The Skins would probably match the deal. If they franchised Cousins to tag and trade you might even get him for the 20 if that's what you wanted to do. Edit: it doesn't matter what we'd want to do he's going to sign the franchise tag any day now and be off the market.
they tagged him because they are ok with paying him 20 mil for 1 season to see if he can do it again. paying extra for the flexibility to bail if he is a fraud is a smart move. if he show he is worth it,a contract will be easy to work out. right now the skins have no intentions of trading or signing him long term. he will play on the tag in 2016
You're probably right that another team will, and let them. If all he cares about is money, screw him! If so, I hope winds up with the Browns or a team with a horrible OL and he gets the shit beat out of him. I hope Mac will stick to his guns and not overpay for any FA, be it Mo, Fitz, Snacks or whomever.
I don't get all the hate for this one. he's 27, threw for over 4000 yards, almost 70% completion rate and nearly had a 3-1 td/int ratio his first full season as a starter. he helped lead a team with a bottom third of the league defense to the playoffs albeit in a crap division. yes, 2 first round picks is a high price to pay but no one is giving us a young up and coming starting qb for peanuts anytime soon. you need a good qb in this league and we never have much more than washed up has beens, never will be's or journeymen looking for one last l pay day. I don't think it's a bad idea at all. Some team willing to take a big risk could end up with a big reward here.
Yes, that's certainly possible. That team could also wind up looking like fools and being the laughingstock of the NFL for getting hosed by the Redskins. I've liked Cousins more than most posters on this board, but I wouldn't give up two 1sts for him. The only reason I'd consider doing a Mo straight up trade for Cousins is because we need the Cap space, but I wouldn't give Cousins over $8 million a year, so we'd never come to terms on a contract. I'd truly rather start Geno and go 0-16 if need be, than overpay some mediocre QB and screw our cap for the next several years.
So let me get this straight. You would give up 2 first round picks for a QB who had 1 good year (and also had some real shitty moments in said year). But wait there's more! You'd also overpay him?
Of course taking a big risk has a big potential downside. I hope that our decision makers aren't making decisions based on fear of looking bad. I hope they're making decisions based on whether they think they can help make us a championship team. Of course they should always consider the downside of any potential move, but fear of what people will think if it fails shouldn't be a consideration. We aren't exactly one of the shining stars in terms of NFL teams anyway. 2 firsts is a hell of a lot to give up but I wouldn't laugh the idea out of the room. I think it's worth consideration.
Fast forward 3 years: ESPN: "Jets tag Petty after Petty turns down $120M contract offer with $80M guaranteed"
IMo you are making an interesting argument here. I am not sold on it, but I think it is a mistake to say your argument has no merit. IF and that is a big if the Jets were reasonably confident they could get a 27 year old Qb in good health who is a top 20 potentially top 15 NFL Qb for two first round picks, I can see maybe just maybe pulling that trigger. I still don't see a sophomore GM making that kind of risky move, though.
Instead of selling the farm/breaking the bank for a quarterback who was considered dogshit until eight games ago, why don't we draft a QB every year until we find our guy? People were laughing at Washington for taking RG3 and Cousins in the same draft. Looks like it was the right move. Also, is Kirk Cousins not the most hick sounding name ever?
I think this is moot now because I'm pretty sure that signature means the skins have exclusive negotiating rights now
