By being "better" I assume you meant have a better record. I think this team will be better simply because Bowles, Gailey and the CS will have been here for a year. The players will know what to expect, they have a year's experience in the systems, and the CS will have had a chance to evaluate and learn from their mistakes, so they should be better. We lost a number of games last year that we could (should?) have won. I think the team will play smarter this season and probably make fewer mistakes, but their record will in all likelihood be worse with the tougher schedule, the reasons you mention, the situations with Mo, Snacks, Ivory, Powell, Brick, etc., and the lack of cap space with which to address needs. I think 8-8 is probably optimistic. I think it's very possible that we could only win 5-6 games this season unless the draft falls our way and we're able to trade Mo for picks.
Winning 5-6 games would be a disaster after going 10-6. I get it, the schedule is insanely hard, but still. I think our floor is 7 wins unless we have a major injury. I think we will go 8-8 but look even better IMO.
I get the schedule argument, but at this point it's to early to say what the Jets roster will look like, let alone the opponents'. Having said that this obviously is a year when there will not be a lot of new FA's coming in, so year to year it looks more set than average. But there's still room for optimism: OL. THis could be a case of addition by subtraction. Assuming Ferguson restructures his contract and stays, there is reason to expect improvement on the right side if by nothing more than with Breno gone and at a minimum more to choose from than Winters at RG. WR, TE. Somebody is likely to emerge as a real threat here to help Marshall and Decker out. LB. With no more false hope placed in Coples, and Davis likely gone as well, there's clear room here for an upgrade, maybe both inside and out. And Fitz will have had a full year with this CS and most carrying over on the offensive roster. Then we can also reasonably expect even better performance from the CS. I think all those things more than compensate for one of Wilkerson or Henderson likely being gone.
I'm not sure it would be a disaster, but it would certainly hurt! I hope you're right that the floor would be 7 wins, and I'm hoping for 8-8 or maybe even 9-7, but at this point, I think that's very optimistic. FA and the draft could totally change the whole situation, particularly if Mo is traded for picks and we have cap space to sign some quality FAs.
I hope you're right. I'm confident that the CS will be better, and that with the team having had a year in the systems, and Fitz with Marshall and Decker, those things will all be better. I think the draft picks will certainly help as well. If Mac is able to sign a few second tier FAs to address needs, that should help as well. As for "addition by subtraction," remember when Schotty resigned and the sentiment was that no one could be worse? Well, we got worse. Again, I trust Mac and Bowles, but their options are extremely limited unless we can sign Mo and lower his cap hit or trade him to open up cap space.
Any other fan forum thinks their team is going 11-5 at least, even after they sucked the previous year. Here it's the opposite lol.
Only before free agency starts. 1or 2 signings and a popular 1st rd pick and some will start talking like we are the 84 49ers
What is the likely hood they trade Mo? I was of the opinion to keep him but not at the expense of us being hindered cap wise. Jaksonville and 49ers seem to be two team maybe even the co-tenets for Mo's services. The exclusion tag is 2 1st rounders if I am not mistaken which seem like a corporate poison pill strategy meaning IMHO no one is going to pay him 100m or whatever and give up two 1st rounders. Am I off here?
The Jets could take either the Jaguars or the 49ers 1st round pick in a tag and trade scenario and come out ok. Mo would get his big deal, the team that got him would pay just a single 1st round pick, albeit high in the draft, and that's about the best we can hope for. If the Jets and Mo cannot reach a deal this year before July 15th it will be a major blow to both sides. Mo will play and risk injury next season without guarantees moving forward and the Jets will see their likely compensation for him capped at a 3rd round sandwich pick.
If I'm the jets I'm picking up the phone and calling the Giants. I know there maybe a conflict of interest but they give us the best opportunity to make a deal. The number ten pick is a good place to start and not a bad return for Mo.
No team with a top 15 pick is trading a first round pick for Muhammad Wilkerson, and paying his contract -That includes the Giants. Just the Jets luck that this would be very strong draft at the defense line position. It's going to be very hard for the Jets to trade him this year. If the team has no intention to sign Wilkerson long term , than we should be prepared for the fact he might be playing under that franchise tag all year.( severely hampering what the Jets can do this offseason.
I don't understand this logic? If the draft is so WEAK and other teams have Mo on a pedestal, why wouldn't they trade their 1st/2nd & 3rd round picks for a proven All-Pro DE rather than draft "weak" players.
This draft actually holds a bunch of talented D-lineman in the top end...and a handful of RB's maybe4- 5 good ones...but outside of that what else is there? The QB's aren't even heard of outside of Wentz Lynch and Goff, the WR and CB are slow, only about 2-3 pass rushers that have been noteworthy.. what else is there?
I'm not disagreeing with you, but using your weak draft thought, why wouldn't a GM with the 10th pick+ not give up a first for Mo, given his status and weak draft? You get more value from a proven commodity than a dice role in the draft (giving up very little considering it's a weak class). If the draft class is NOT weak, then you can make the argument that other GM's won't part with their #1's because they see a chance to replicate the talent they are after (Mo) at a lesser cost.
oh by any means if somebody is giving up that kind of value i'm all for it.. the main rumor going around is that we'll be getting a 2nd and 4th probably at best in return for Mo so my post was kind of riding off of that. I don't feel we're going to be getting our fair return out of that. I must say though, if we could trade somebody like Dallas or Jags for their 2nd round pick i would be all over it to snag Jaylon Smith.. if he drops.
I would deal Mo in order to re-sign Snacks and Fitz and take the left over money to sign Mario Williams to a cap friendly 2 year deal. $8 mill per.
Deep down I feel we're gonna get a 6 year 90 mil (40 plus guaranteed) deal done with Mo that will cost us around 12 mil this year ... I would trade Mo for a 1st and 3rd but I feel its a bit unlikely
