I did the research and your hypothesis is confirmed for the Mets/Yanks. There's only been 1 deal between them since 2004 and that was a contract purchase. Last trade player-for-player was 2004 but before that it was more common. Can't find a similar database for the NFL. http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/trade-partners.cgi?franch_ID_1=NYM&franch_ID_2=NYY
I'd imagine a solid player would have to get sent over too.. at that point we might as well sign him to 13-14M per year rather than just let him go for 2 picks in a weak draft that could easily be busts. That's a very SOJ thing to let happen. We need to get our moneys worth or just pay up.
don't forget Mebame and Red Bryant! that was a crazy talented line. very tough to run on, and with that secondary, they got after QB's effectively too.
You guys are laughable. Wilk is a premier proven talent in this league in his prime, there are soooo many teams that should be drooling over him. The cap just increased by 12 million that alone nearly covers the cost. There are teams with 50, 60 million dollars in cap room that have to spend it by league rule. Who is better that is available? If I'm a team like the Giants, Bears, or Raiders; a team with a ton of cap room and a need for a difference maker on defense I would be calling the Jets ASAP. And we better get fair value, or we lock him up longterm and they never even sniff a talent like him.
I think it was enevitable for this to happen. We will try to lock him up for 13-14 mil over 5-6 years... Hopefully Mo plays ball...
I'm sure it's similar with the Dodgers/Angels and Astros/Rangers too. These days it just doesn't make much sense to deal with a crosstown or in state rival. It's bad enough making a bad trade. But to make a bad trade to a team in your own city, and in our case, same building, would be a disaster.
Dealing Mo would put Sheldon in the driver seat with his negotiations.. And I'd rather have Mo than Sheldon... If we deal anyone I'd deal Sheldon and try to sign Mo long term. I bet the saints would love Sheldon... He is exactly what they need. The question is would they give us their 1st this year... Tough to say...
I agree, but that's only because I don't think the jets are even considering trading him... But if the giants make the best offer and the Jets really are intent about trading him, they'd be stupid to say no, just because they are cross town rivals. That doesn't even make sense. It's just a fan thing. Just because it's rare, doesn't mean it won't happen, or that the Giants could win a superbowl because the Jets traded them a franchise DE. If the Jets brass thinks like that, they should be immediately fired. Drama reasons are not actual football reasons and never have been. Nobody thinks that, "oh we can't make this trade because if the giants win the superbowl we look bad". The same could apply to any team in the league. It's just emotional fans acting emotional. If they make the best offer, it's dumb to turn it down unless the best offer is still really bad.
It took them 4 years to put that DL together and that was 12 years ago, which is ancient history in terms of the NFL. That team also had some pretty good (putting it mildly) LBs by the names of Willie McGinest, Teddy Bruschi, Mike Vrable and Ted Johnson. Without that LB corps, that DL wouldn't have been half as effective as it was. Unless I'm mistaken, Seymour was really the first 3-4 DE to be a big pass rusher. I believe it was that 3-4 D that started the evolution of that alignment.
I think everyone would rather keep Mo than Sheldon, but that's beside the point. Sheldon isn't wanting a huge contract at the moment, and unless he turns his off the field act around 180 degrees, he isn't going to get one any time soon. It's not tough to say. NO TEAM is going to give us a 1st round pick for Sheldon at this point. That's totally unrealistic.
The question isn't investing that money into defensive lineman, the question is investing that type of money into the type of defensive lineman we're talking about. We're not talking about edge rushers that blow by tackles. How many times watching the Jets last year were you screaming that the quarterback had all day? Offensive lineman can match beef with beef. They struggle against speed.
I don't think our fans watched the Denver defense in the playoffs this year, if they did they would stop with the misplaced loyalty to Wilkerson. Keep Leonard Williams, Richardson, and Snacks or another big body in the middle and get some playmaking linebackers to complement Mauldin. It's really not that hard to figure out.
And when it was time to pay them, the Pats cut ties with them or traded them and received value for them while they could.
I'm not debating that they don't. I'm simply pointing out the circumstances are not comparable. Am I saying the Jets WILL trade Wilk to NYG? No. But I am saying if the offer is right they won't say no simply bc they are the Giants. If you want to believe they will, that's fine.
Makes logical sense. The only thing that makes me extremely nervous is Sheldon's risk when it comes to suspension. If not for that, it would be a no brainer.
The defensive lineman we're talking about can do a lot more than just be 3-4 DEs and I think Bowles sees it as the same way. I think Mo can be a career 10 sack guy as an interior pass-rusher on passing downs. I don't think of Wilk as a guy that can just eat up blockers, I see him as a guy that can line up all over the defensive line and create mismatches. He makes those around him better. I would love to pair him up with Maudlin and another edge rusher, and watch those edge rushers win 1 on 1 match-ups. Our pass-rush can be better, that I do agree with. I would rather keep Mo, try and get that deal signed. QBs are getting rid of the football in 2.5 seconds, so pass rushing isn't as easy as it used to be.
You're correct. They're definitely above average 3-4 ends. But that still doesn't translate to having confidence in our line getting to the quarterback. Teams find a way to generate pressure despite the fact that quarterbacks get rid of theit passes quicker. Let Leonard Williams be our stud 3-4 defensive lineman moving forward on his rookie deal, and improve the linebackers.
