He's actually a little bigger than Tony Dorsett with nearly similar speed (in the video he's listed as 5'10 & 202lbs). I know that was another era, but I think Tony would excel today if he was in his prime. About returning punts, I haven't seen him doing that but I think as a change of pace back he will be a major plus. Today, it's running back by committee, I would Very Much like to have Tyler Ervin as a member of Our committee.... plus he would be in line with keeping Bowles' goal of getting us faster in All positions.
Jordan Howard... or as i like to call him "Mr. Get Outta My Way" Look, this guy is going to be a hit or miss in the mid rounds.. Usually guys like this don't last or just don't pan out in the NFL because they can't bully people like they did in college.. these are grown men in the pro's. Jordan Howard is a straight up BULLY. He's not looking to go around you, he's not looking to run pass you, he's looking to run THROUGH you, EVERY TIME!!! Straight bruiser. Non factor in the pass game... only 24 catches in his 3 years @ Indiana (he's a junior). Had a 300 carry season.. proven he can carry the load. Not really a good blocker, can lay a nice hit on a defender but not necessarily a blocker. No elusiveness. All power, his run style is seek and destroy, which will probably add to his INJURY HISTORY (knees : /, no surgeries though but left alot of games early.. absorbing too much contact). Not fast, but has decent vision and initial burst through the hole.. No issues with fumbling.. probably low risk high reward since he should be had in the later rounds .. 3rd-4th-(5th?!)
If that's the case, then I have zero interest in him. We need a 3 down RB, even though we will be doing RB by committee. I don't want another RB that isn't a good receiver. Also, it doesn't make sense that he's a bully and looks to run over people when he has the ball, but then can't or won't block. In addition, RBs who utilize that style don't last long.
Here are the RB bench press results. How pathetic is it of this OL class that a number of RBs out bench pressed them? Strong OL draft my ass! Janovich, Andy Nebraska 30 Vitale, Dan Northwestern 30 Vainuku, Soma Southern Cal 26 Marshall, Keith Georgia 25 Madden, Tre Southern Cal 24 Washington, DeAndre Texas Tech 24 Lasco, Daniel California 23 Booker, Devontae Utah 22 Henry, Derrick Alabama 22 Ferguson, Josh Illinois 21 Wilds, Brandon South Carolina 21 Barber, Peyton Auburn 20 Carson, Tra Texas A&M 19 Perkins, Paul UCLA 19 Collins, Alex Arkansas 18 Dixon, Kenneth Louisiana Tech 18 Coprich, Marshaun Illinois State 17 Ervin, Tyler San Jose State 17 Gronkowski, Glenn Kansas State 17 Howard, Jordan Indiana 16 Taylor, Kelvin Florida 15 Smallwood, Wendell West Virginia 14 Thornton, Shad North Carolina State 12 Drake, Kenyan Alabama 10
lol I hate RBs that play physical but don't block good it makes no sense to me either...but like I said he'll definite lay a lick on somebody when he wants to. maybe it's just him not WANTING to block, good coaching will fix that up.. or he just won't play its that simple. I don't think this kid will last long but if all else fails and he's there in the 5th round why not? Hell even if all else doesn't fail and here's there why not? goal line/ short yardage back!
If he's there in the 5th, sure. I don't think he will be, however. Someone will take him in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Not the biggest Derrick Henry fan but damn he put up some numbers today. 6' 2 5/8", 247 pounds, 4.52 40, 37 inch vert Almost identical combine numbers to Von Miller (maybe he can rush the passer?)
That was my initial reaction too. Maybe he cut weight so he could run faster at the combine, or maybe it just seems like he's bigger because it's not normal for someone that big to be handling the ball
Henry is the next superstar running back. I'm a Bama die hard and he was better than Yeldon. This year he won the Hiesman.. So that speaks for it self. After that combine, pure size, speed and strength. Wow. His stock just sky rocketed!
Winners and Losers from the Combine today according to Bucky Brooks at NFL.com Winner Kenyan Drake, running back, Alabama: After living in Derrick Henry's shadow in Tuscaloosa, Drake is suddenly in the spotlight following his strong performance on the Lucas Oil Stadium turf. He posted back-to-back 4.4s in the 40 and flashed exceptional balance, body control and burst in positional drills. Drake looks like a third-down back with the potential to make immediate contributions as part of a diverse RB rotation. Losers Alex Collins, running back, Arkansas: Collins was slotted as the third running back on most boards heading into the combine, but a lackluster showing on Friday could put his position in peril. Collins showed minimal explosiveness in athletic drills (28.5-inch vertical jump, 4.59-second 40-yard dash) and struggled snagging passes during positional drills. He appeared to fight the ball as a pass catcher, and it is hard to envision him making a strong contribution to any team's passing game. Considering how offensive coordinators covet a dynamic multi-purpose back, Collins' limitations in the aerial attack could sink his value on draft boards around the league. Kelvin Taylor, running back, Florida: The early entrant was a bit of an unknown commodity heading into Indy, but his legacy (as Fred Taylor's son) fueled expectations of a strong performance this weekend. However, Taylor didn't deliver the goods with a poor 40 time (4.60) and a lackluster showing in drills (too many dropped passes), leading to more questions about his fit as a feature back.
I thought he had a very nice one handed grab at the beginning of the drills. The QB threw it behind him and he was able to adjust quickly, locate the ball and catch it. 3rd rounder IMO.
You crack me up NC, I like your zeal man! On another note, I can't believe my guy Josh Ferguson, was only one bench press behind Derrick Henry, either Henry is weak for a power back, or Ferguson is going to be a lot stronger even though he is 5'9, and can catch the ball better than most of the guys ahead of him. I believe speed in a RB is very important in Gaileys offense, and the kid from Georgia has caught my attention. Maybe schottenhrimer did not realize what he had in him and that's why Georgia did not use him.
You're probably right. I've never trusted Bucky Brooks and rarely agree with him anyway. If we take Collins, I definitely hope that you're right. I was disappointed in his performance in the other events. It's interesting how one can look at video of players and they look so fast and athletic in uniform in games, then get them in shorts, and they suddenly don't look so fast or athletic. I wonder if they have a way of doctoring game videos and highlight videos to make them faster.
