That's not a factor unless you believe in curses or jinxes. We have a new GM and a new Scouting Dept. They'd be hard pressed to repeat the incompetence of Idzik, Tanny, and Bradway.
To me his primary position doesn't matter because Mo can play in any scheme. He is super effective in ANY scheme. 3-4 DE 4-3 DE 4-3 DT It doesn't matter. He's a matchup nightmare. I wish there was a way to find out the % of what alignment he was in the most. There were games where the Jets didn't run any 3-4.
I don't think any were big losses. Moss was a nice receiver for a few years and he may have been the biggest loss. Abe took too many plays off, didn't play when he perhaps could have in big games. Key, I never liked or wanted and was sick of his mouth. I was elated to see him go. I don't think Vilma was nearly as good for us as he was for the Saints. Now that was probably due to the incompetence of our DC and defensive coaches, but I never thought he was that good for us. Many of his tackles were after the ball carrier had already gained 5-8 yards downfield. Farrior was not that good for us, either. He didn't really blossom into a topnotch OLB until he went to the Steelers. He may never have blossomed with us. Yes, it hurts to see good/great players traded away and see them play at a higher level for other teams than they did for us. But if our CS couldn't figure out how to best utilize their talents and if they had remained and underperformed, would it really have been any better? The reason that many, if not all of them were traded away was because of the lack of competence in our owners, GMs, and CSs, resulting in no stability. Offensive and defensive systems, philosophies and alignments were changed like underwear. And those players no longer fit. It was frustrating, but hopefully, that kind of thing is in the past. Hopefully, Mac and Bowles are going to be a great combo and will be here for many years, giving us the stability and championships we've dreamed of for years.
Abe could definitely make plays when he was healthy, but how often was he healthy? Maybe time has dimmed his impact in my mind, but at the time, I thought trading him was a great move. On the Jets' site where I was posting at the time, most of us thought it was a great move. We thought he had dogged it a lot. The fact that the Jets haven't found a replacement doesn't affect whether that was a good move or not, only reflects how incompetent their GMs and Scouting Dept. have been.
we shouldnt need much in cap space because we shouldnt be players in the ufa market this year with snacks, ivory, and demario likely gone, we would be looking at three comp picks in 2017 (likely in the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds) if we stay away from ufa franchise mo, re-sign fitz, and fill in the rest with cap casualties and draft picks
While working the system to gain compensatory picks is a consideration, imo that shouldn't be the overriding goal. Improving the team and filling some holes should be. We need an upgrade at RG. We need a real TE, a real pass-rushing OLB, and we need at least two RBs. We only have 6 draft picks. For the money we would pay Mo, we could likely sign Fitz, Snacks and Powell, as well as another good second tier FA to address a need. I think that has to get some serious consideration.
I also like it because you can also cut Fitz after 2016 if Petty or another young QB emerges. I'm not saying it's impossible, but if MM can pull that off and keep Harrison somehow without hurting our RB situation, I will be very impressed.
That will make at least two of us!! If he's able to do that, then they ought to just go ahead and give him NFL Exec of the decade and put him in the HOF, because I think it's about that impossible.
We were able to carry over $2.5 million of salary cap space today. That could be used to sign Bilal Powell or help the cause in general. https://www.nflpa.com/news/all-news/2016-nfl-clubs-unused-salary-cap-carryover-amounts-announced
Fitz had a great season, but he isn't worth big money. When he strings 2-4 seasons like he had last season together, then we can talk about big money. Until he does, paying him the big bucks is a mistake. He is a Harvard grad, he knows he isn't gonna get this big payday until he proves it. Last season's stats were more of an attribute to his receivers, Marshall mainly. If Marshall doesn't play to the level he did, we win 6-7 games, and Fitz's stats wouldn't have been so wonderful. Paying him the big bucks would be a mistake.
Fitz already got paid big bucks in Buffalo. On October 28, 2011, Fitzpatrick signed a six-year, $59 million contract extension including a $10 million signing bonus with the Bills. He had three 300-yard performances in the 2011 season, with a season high 369 yards vs. the Patriots.
Franchise Mo, tell Snacks we'll match whatever he can get on the open market, offer Fitzpatrick an incentive laden contract that will pay him decently overall and step up well if the Jets win a playoff game next year, win the Super Bowl next year. Restructure D'Brick down to $5M base + roster bonus for 2016, with a clause that he can get to $11M again with an All-Pro season, $8M with a Pro Bowl season. Offer Giacomini a restructure down to $2.5M for 2016. Let him go if he wants to test the market. Trade Kerley for a late draft pick. Somebody will bite. Cut Cumberland. Make the decision as to whether Winters is going to play RG before the draft and cut him if not. If he's viewed as an heir apparent to Mangold maybe you keep him around. He really got screwed by hitting the incentives. Geno Smith and Tommy Bohanon head a list of about 10 guys that could be on the team or make way for a new face depending on what the draft and free agency bring. You can't cut them to make space for the big ticket signings because their numbers just aren't that high but you can cut them to make space for somebody making about the same amount, like a 2nd or 3rd round QB, a late round FB/H-Back/TE, etc.
Restructure Brock and Giacomini and push dead money into 2017?? NO freaking way!!! Absolutely terrible idea imo. If they trade Kerley, won't his cap hit remain with the Jets? If so, why would they want to do that (particularly for a low round draft pick) when they can cut him and gain some cap space? Franchising Mo, matching whatever offer Snacks gets, even with an incentive-laden contract for Fitz won't fit under the cap imo.
Not sure if this has been discussed but I heard on Bleacher Report that it doesn't look like we are picking up Milliner's 5th year option. If I heard correctly it would have been $11 million considering where he was picked so it's pretty much a no brainer.
That would be stupid to not pick up Milliner's fifth year option? What happens if Milliner ( I know a long shot) has big year in 2016. What is the harm if he has a typical Milliner year.( He gets the Coples treatment) See Q Coples what did it cost the Jets to pick up the fifth year option. Nada he was cut before and it didn't cost the jets 7.5 million he was suppose to be paid. Just protection if Milliner turns it around, if not he simply cut without having to pay that 11 million.
I'm not too familiar with how all this $ stuff works but when I saw that $11 # it kinda made me throw up in my mouth a bit. I thought if they picked it up they were obligated to pay it ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
