If we trade Mo after tagging him, we are almost certainly targeting 2 speedy linebackers that can get to the QB. We'll have an improving Williams along with likely Snacks in the middle and Sheldon. Makes sense
It completely sucks that we have to let guys go even though we're I'd say that we're contenders now. I am sure we could resign everyone if they came in at more of a fair price, but some free agent big name always has to "set the market" --and never usually play up the value of that ludicrous contract mind you-- and after that the rest of the good players even more money. I get how this whole system works, so I am not being a naive Jets fan, but to me I'd rather play for a good team than end up on the Browns.
someone else is going to overpay for ivory. Powell is going to buffalo now that McCoy has made such a mess. Like all your cuts though. Restructure brick. Tag mo if they have to but probably best to trade him. Snacks, Sheldon and Williams with douzable as next man up is a formidable cost effective defensive line.
Spotrac may be right, but I think if anyone pays Forte $7.4 million they're on drugs. He had the worst year of his career last year. He is becoming more brittle, has missed a number of games over the last couple of seasons, and RBs production can vanish over night. I wouldn't pay him any more than $2-3 million and even that's questionable. You don't get it. RB is a huge need for us. You need for your RB to have fresh legs and to be able to make it through the season. We need to use at least one and maybe TWO draft picks on RBs. Powell isn't a feature back. We need a feature back and we could also use a RB who also returns punts and KOs. If the Jets don't draft at least one RB, they can probably forget about having any shot at the playoffs this year. Powell, Bell/Forte and another vet RB aren't gonna cut it. We know Ivory won't make it through the season and we know he wears down. We're also pretty sure that he will get overpaid by some team. He's not coming back. He's not worth it. Thanks for the link to the overthecap.com/draft page. That is something new. As I thought, you misread it. As I suspected, we can' t deduct anything. His statement is misleading. Look at the table and the salary slots for each round. The Jets draft picks add up to $4,805,687 not the $2 million figure you stated. Jason knows more about the cap than I, but I think he was doing drugs, was drunk, or hadn't had any morning coffee yet when he wrote that. Even if some of those rookie contracts are in the bottom two and not counted towards the cap, most will be included. I also think those figures can vary according to the positions drafted, as QBs, LTs, CBs, WRs, RBs and OLBs are paid more than other positions. He does say that they're "estimates". They aren't hard and fast numbers. You're obviously young and trying to be helpful, but it isn't helpful to post misleading and false information.
Any team that signs Forte will be in good shape at runningback. He's not someone you sign to a 5 year extension, and while his numbers were down as a result of missing a couple games, he's a yeat removed from a 100+ catch season. He's been one of the most durable runningbacks in the league and while I'd rather not allocate the $6 or $7 million he's worth to the runningback spot I'd bet you money he has a solid year next year and maybe one more after that.
You may be right, but even if so, as you yourself said in another post, if we pay him $6-$7 million per season, we aren't re-signing Snacks or Fitz, or we're not re-signing Mo. Is a 30 something year-old RB really worth that cost? I don't think so.
Not for us, but it's a no brainer for a team like New England, Denver (although in cap hell), Dallss, Seattle, maybe Arizona or Green Bay.
There sure is a lot to talk about this off season, but imo one of the decisions the FO should figure out if not first but certainly early on and before the draft, is what they are going to do about Ferguson. I totally get the concern about cutting him outright, then who plays LT? But unless the Jets appear ready to cut him, what good does it do to threaten to cut him if it's not a believable position? It's my understanding that unless the Jets cut him they will either have to trade him or pay him his contract, which is way too much based on his recent performance (I think we all here agree on that last point). In a negotiation you don't have leverage on a point if it is one that while you in theory have it available, both parties in effect know you will not use it. So, if the Jets are not willing to cut Ferguson at the risk of him walking, then he can just sit there and say "cut me or pay me." And if they do cut him, it's no guarantee that he will renegotiate with the Jets rather than seek a deal elsewhere. I agree with the consensus we more or less have here that best would be to renegotiate him down to a more reasonable number, even overpaying a bit rather than way overpaying him. But the Jets at first have to be willing to run the risk he will walk if they cut him. So, do the Jets take that risk, or perform his current contract?
I got a question say they cut him and he counts 5 mil toward the cap in dead money (we save 9) say we re-sign him that dead money still counts correct ? So at the end of the day we save what a mil maybe 2 heck he's prob worth 9 mil ... meaning it ends up a wash ... yes or no ?
My whole thing with renegotiating Ferguson is that if they cut his salary in half, that's still more than he'd likely receive on the open market IMO. I count five left tackles on the open market that are likely better signings than Brick (Glenn, Beachum, Donald Penn, Okung, and either Beatty/Bushrod/Ryan Harris). Only three of those seven are under 30. Teams looking for a short term older fix at left tackle have much better options than D'Brickashaw IMO. I never truly believe in the whole "players would rather stay place than get greedy and make money," but I do believe in some cases for aging veterans who have made plenty of money it might be well worth taking the paycut than go through the hassle to move for what may only be one more year.
I don't disagree here, and it may well play out that way. But imo the Jets have to be willing to see Ferguson walk, and have another plan if he does.
Cutting your tenured left tackle with no replacement, with a roster that has a window to win that is shorter due to age, makes absolutely zero % sense. Unless the plan is to sign Okung or get Thomas.
Looking at OTC worst case scenario if we restructure Brick which saves us 4 million this season we could cut ties with him and Revis next season for a total savings of 23 million... yes a pay cut would be the way to go but as mentioned he has all the leverage...
Silver lining here is that this seems like the only tough year for us ... get through this tough cap stretch and it should look bright for the future
That being said it all comes down to hitting in the draft since both Revis and Brick will have to be replaced
yeah but they've gone to Ferguson to restructure so many times. At some point ya'll got to pay the man. If I'm him, I'm like WTF why do I even sign a contract if you ask to restructure every other year? He might get his release just based on this scenario. This will be the 3rd restructure of the contract he signed in 2010!
I agree to some extent but to another that becomes the agents fault. If I'm Brick I'm furious that this guy kept pushing my money off until my play declines with not a ton of guaranteed money left.
It works both ways. If we are really serious about trying to compete for the playoffs we don't let our franchise record setting qb leave because we want him to take less than FMV. I don't see why he can't come close to what he did this year with the same wrs and system. And i was very down on fitz going into last year. But the truth is early 30s are prime years for qbs.it that point where there physical abilities and mental capacity meet. Sure they might not have the fastball they had at 28 but the games moving slower than it ever has.
Fitz never had a fastball anyway. He is the Tommy John of NFL QBs.. I mean honestly couldn't you substitute Fitz's name into this haha http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/cb280268
Because he's much older. You can't pay him like a young QB entering his prime. He's at the end of his career, he could start declining significantly in the next year or 2. CK's overpaid. Also Ivory will prob command at least 8m. Thinking he'll sign at 4 is a bit low. You might be able to lock up Forte at a price like that, but not Ivory.
