NFL history is full of star players who were late round draft picks and even those who went undrafted in recent years. Some players are late bloomers physically. Some didn't receive good coaching in college. Some suffered through injuries early in their NFL careers. Some are never given a chance because their team already has a quality starter or players at that position. Are the odds against UDFAs and low-round picks becoming quality starters, much less stars? Yes, definitely, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen every year.

Qvale shouldn't be lumped in with the rest until it's definitely been proven that he can't become a quality player.

Let's put this conversation into context.

I want the kid to succeed as much as you do but I am not willing to bet the life and health of my starting quarterback on the odds that he does.

I am not saying to cut the guy. What I am saying is that we can not say that cutting Breno without finding a suitable replacement does not leave a hole in our starting lineup. We can not say the hole isn't there because we have penciled Qvale in to start.

Geno Smith has had every opportunity to prove himself and failed miserably at every turn yet there is a contingent on this message board (much quieter over the last season than before) that believes he is or can be the chosen one. Jeremy "fair catch" Kerley stole $4 mil from the Jets this year contributing very little in return yet people in this very thread are defending him. Those guys are has beens and Qvale so far is a never was.

Sure Qvale is a young guy and could become a starter (for us?) but we need to keep things in perspective and have a draft pick or a veteran to replace Breno and or Brick instead of going cheap and rolling the dice on this kid until we know what he is or isn't.

Let's not put words in people's mouths and jump to conclusions.

I haven't seen anyone advocating cutting Breno and just handing the starting RT job to Qvale. I have only seen people wonder what he might be able to give us and if he has any real potential. At the moment, he can't even be counted on to be a reliable backup RT, much less the starter. I haven't even seen that many people advocating cutting Breno, but the ones who have, have talked about signing another FA RT or drafting an OT to replace him, and haven't even mentioned the possibility of Qvale stepping in and replacing him.

We basically have to pray that Amaro or Enunwa becomes a good receiver this year because I don't see Mac investing a lot here when we have so many other places we need to invest on this team.

While TE certainly isn't a priority and much of a use in Gailey's system, I'd be down if we were able to bring in Zach Miller (Bears); he is an FA correct?

Cut ties with Davis and Cumberland, roster Amaro and Miller or Sudfeld.

Is it possible Cumberland plays for another team next year? I thought he was on a perpetual life time contract?

We need to abandon this thought process. Gailey doesn't use a tightend when all of his tightends are trash. I'd guarantee he'd rather have that dual threat specifically to help out run blocking.

Scott Chandler had 38 catches for 389 yards and 6 touchdowns in year 1 with Gailey and 43 catches for 571 yards and 6 touchdowns in year 2 with Gailey in Buffalo.

He doesn't use players that are trash regardless of their position. We had as close to a 0 grade as we could've at the tightend position last year. Amaro should be an upgrade and Davis can be kept on as the #3 for blocking purposes. We should find a low level #2 at this point.

I agree. I think Gailey will use whatever talent he has. History has shown that. I'd even be willing to move on from Davis if they can find a cheaper alternative who blocks as well as he does. If not, then I agree he should stay just as a blocker unless Gailey decides to use an extra OL as a blocking TE.

St Louis just cut James Lauranitis, Jared Cook and Chris Long. Interesting

Edit: Los Angeles! Gonna take me a while to get used to that

Will Jared Cook be too expensive for the Jets? If not, I'd be interested in possibly signing him to shore up our TE position.

I would love to stick Lauranitis in the middle of that defense.

Not FA related, but too bad Howard over at 'Bama is returning for his senior year. Would have loved to have a shot at him.

Does anyone have any interest in the Jets signing Joique Bell as part of the RB rotation if he's recovered from his injuries? He's a power back and supposedly a good receiver. The article I read said that he'd probably sign with some team as a backup at a lower salary.

The Star Ledger has an article today listing 13 UFAs the Jets should consider.

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/02/13_players_jets_must_look_at_closely_in_free_agenc.html#13

Von Miller - a pipe dream
    Lamar Miller, RB (Dolphins)
    Mitchell Schwartz, RT (Browns)
    Alex Boone, OG (Niners)
    Kelechi Osemele, OG (Ravens)
    Marcedes Lewis, TE (Jaguars)
    Jerraud Powers, CB (Cardinals)
    Travis Benjamin, WR (Browns)
    Matt Forte, RB (Bears)
    Brandon Brooks, OG (Texans)
    Danny Trevathan, ILB (Broncos)
    Jeff Allen, RT (Chiefs)
    Joique Bell, RB (Lions)

We'd all love to add Von Miller, but we all know that the Broncos aren't gonna let him hit FA, and even if they did, there's no way we could afford him

Lamar Miller, Travis Benjamin, Danny Trevathan, Matt Forte, and Mitchell Schwartz have been mentioned already by posters here and discussed.

What are your thoughts on Boone, Osemele, Lewis, Powers, Brooks, Allen and Bell?

Lewis I know a little, and he would be a stop gap for a year or two, but is decent, or at least was. Forte is older than I'd like, but considering the Jets' needs and likely cap space, he may be the best option although I'd rather go with Lamar Miller.

Osemele's name and game I'm somewhat familiar with, but not Brooks or Boone. I'm especially interested in whether they may be viable options to replace Winters. Similarly, I'm interested in whether Allen might be a reasonable replacement for Giacomini. I like the versatility the article mentions.

It will be interesting to see what Bowles and Mac think of Williams. If they think he can handle the job, they probably don't sign or draft a CB, but Bowles may really like Powers and have concerns about Williams.

Amini Silatolu of the Panthers is another OG FA I think should be considered. He's young, should be fairly cheap and is pretty good.

Ladarius Green is another FA TE I think should be considered.

for me, the first priorities are signing Fitz and extending Wilk.
then i'd bring back some depth guys like Jarrett (can play both S positions), Douzable (can play anywhere on DL), Bilal Powell, and Henderson.

externally, I'd look for a RT option (after cutting Breno), a starting TE (let Davis walk), and a starting Punter (let Quigley walk).
maybe some depth at returner, RB and LB as well (Trevathan would be great pickup).

not very splashy this year, as signing our own is most important.

We agree on Fitz, as long as the deal is reasonable (no more than $9 million per season), Douzable, Powell and Henderson.

If we can keep Mo without losing other valuable players we want to keep AND address some holes/needs, great, we're in agreement there too. The thing is, I don't think that can happen. I think Mac is faced between keeping Mo or keeping Snacks and being able to address some of our holes/needs. Trevathan would be a great pickup, but won't happen if Mo is back. We need Powell back, but also need 2 more RBs. One can come from the draft, but the other will have to be a FA or camp cut. I don't want Stacy back. I don't see how we add a 2nd FA RB if Mo is back.

Similarly, I don't want Pace back at OLB. It's hard for rookies to start at OLB. It's one of the most demanding positions to learn. Even if they take Jaylon Smith, he may not be able to play until the middle or end of the season, if then. We need to be able to sign a second tier FA OLB. Again, with Mo back, I can't see the Jets having the money.

I agree on cutting Breno if they can, but with Mo back, they might not be able to replace him in FA. Quigley should definitely go.

Davis is the only true TE on the roster. IMO they can't let him go unless they plan to replace him. What would our offense look like with a Dwayne Allen, Ladarius Green, Coby Fleener, Jared Cook, or even Marcedes Lewis instead of Davis, Cumberland and Sudfeld?

Antonio Allen is also a FA and imo is better than Jarrett, and a better fit in Bowles' D than Jarrett. In addition to Pryor, the Jets have Rontez Miles, Dion Bailey and Ronald Martin. Who goes?

We also need a 3rd WR, a PR, an upgrade at RG, and better depth on the OL. None of that probably can happen if Mo is back.

For what Mo will command, the Jets can keep/sign at least 2, if not 3 or 4 good FAs and that would have a bigger impact on the team's play than Mo.

Deon Simon might be just fine at NT, but we have no evidence to suggest that he will. Putting any of Williams or Richardson or Mo at NT would be a criminal waste of their talents.

That's something I can get behind. A true cover linebacker.
