Staal is considered day-to-day and is expected to travel with the team for its upcoming road trip to St. Louis and Dallas, said Vigneault, who was unwilling to be more specific on Staal's injury other than a lower-body tweak. Skjei is not expected to join the team on the trip, but Vigneault didn't rule it out. The 21-year-old Skjei, who made his NHL debut on Dec. 15, logged a team-high 22:17 of ice time Tuesday in his third career NHL game, including 4:19 of shorthanded time. Vigneault paired Skjei with Dan Girardi during a major penalty kill to start the third and again later on a minor. Skjei was mostly paired with Kevin Klein at even strength and was credited with one shot and two hits. "I thought he played all right," Vigneault said of Skjei's performance. "You can see that he can skate, he's got a good skill level. Unfortunately as a team we didn't play real well in front of him."
