DB I can see. DL? No freaking way! The Jets have already expended WAY too many 1st round picks on the DL over the last 10 years. If he takes a DL at pick #20, I will turn from one of his biggest supporters to one of his biggest critics, and I will hope he gets fired immediately. There are too many other needs and positions that could be strengthened to add yet another DL. That would be insanity! That's where following any philosophy blindly is a fire-able offense imo. If the clear-cut BPA at #20 is a DL, then he should try to trade down, and if that fails, take the 2nd best prospect.
I disagree. That's a general guideline, not a hard and fast rule to be followed blindly or stupidly, and that's what it would be to take yet another DL at #20. I don't care if Mo is traded and Snacks signs elsewhere in FA, there had damn well not be another DL taken with the Jets first round pick. Continuing to address the same unit and ignoring the rest, especially when it is not even the most important unit on the defense, let alone the team, is nothing but sheer stupidity.
injuries, salary cap, sheldon's a pot head, all good reasons to not bypass the dl if its bpa. if mac has the stones to draft another dl, i would feel much better about him, as i would know he understands what the draft is for and not trying to fill a need for the upcoming season.
Drafting another DL would not be about "having stones" imo. It would be about being stupid, but I don't think Mac is stupid. He knows how many 1st round picks of the Jets have been expended on the DL over the last 7-10 years, and how out of balance the team and defense are. He knows what a hot mess the OLB corps is. He knows the importance of the OL, of RB in our offense, and of having replacements ready when Harris, Brick, Mangold retire, and when Revis and Cro are cut. It's not just about a need for the upcoming season. That's absurd. It's about strengthening and improving the team and not just one position grouping. It's about getting balance, not only on the playing field, but in the salary cap. He knows that no matter how good and deep the DL unit is, the team won't win jack shit until they have pass rushers and LBs who can cover over the middle.
taking a lesser player would be stupid. just look at last year when we clearly had a need at wr and no one would have blamed him if he took kevin white. now, clearly we don't know what white will be but early returns on williams are positive.now, what would the dl look if we were sitting here wondering what happens with mo, how many games sheldon was going to miss and we drafted white instead of williams. there is nothing wrong with strengthening a strength. particularily in the nfl with a hard cap and 100% injury rate
No it isn't. Some positions are more important than others, so even a slightly lesser player at a more important position is worth more than a slightly better player at a position that is less important, particularly if that latter player is only going to be a part-time player, and the other player is going to be a starter or a big part of a rotation. One can only play so many DL at a time, no matter how good they are, and taking yet another when you don't even have adequate starters at other positions is what is really stupid. I think that either approach can yield good results and either approach can yield terrible results or somewhere in between. I don't think it's every good to follow any philosophy, guiding principle or "rule" blindly. I think that there are always exceptions. If the Jets had not used so many first round picks over the last 7 years or so on DL, I'd have no problem with taking another DL, since that is one of the strengths of this draft. The problem is, that they have, and other positions have been grossly ignored to the detriment of the team, and that's what's important, not one position group. The Jets don't get any special award or prize for having the best and deepest DL in the NFL. There is no prize if the Jets set an all-time NFL record for the fewest rushing yards given up in a season, especially if they wind up giving up an NFL record of receiving yards over the middle and wind up with a record of 6-10. The only prize is the Lombardi Trophy, and that goes to the best team. We've already learned that having a great and deep DL doesn't get us anywhere. There has to be balance. We have to be able to score points and we have to be able to consistently pressure opposing QBs.
lesser player=bigger bust potential. the idea is to stockpile talent. later in the draft as players rankings are pushed closer together, trying to fill some holes that might be on the horizion is fine. rd1 you take the best player you can. you can't convince me otherwise. i will let you have the last word, this conversation is getting circular
We can agree to disagree. I understand what you're saying, and respect your opinion, but imo in most things the world just isn't black and white and few guidelines, rules, or philosophies are always right 100% of the time. Your way may be safer, but I think my way gets a better and more complete team quicker than yours. Teams don't wind up with 1st round picks at every position. Lots of players that are higher rated bust, and lower rated players become stars, if not HOFers.
This draft does lack the "super star" talent but has some serviceable and potential star talent. Having said that I think we need to go BPA but narrow it down to 6/7 positions. RB, OT, OG, OLB, ILB, S and WR. I think if we stick to those positions and take the best kid we will be ok...
Darian Thompson from Boise State could be a 1st rounder. He had a great senior bowl. Lets see how his combine and pro-day go.
