I've also seen Pauline say that the Jets really like PS nose tackle Deon Simon in case Harrison walks and Taiwan Jones as an eventual successor to Harris.
Every time he saw the field, the boothfags were pronouncing it "Kwally". I just pronounce it "Peepertits".
Can't be much worse than Breno and he's young, promising and less than 1/10 the price. I'm rooting for Taiwan Jones to make the roster and get more playing this year. It'd make a big difference if they can develop a couple of these UDFAs into starters
Before we put this kid in the Hall of Fame keep in mind that many of you guys heard that the coaching staff was high on Aboushi and that he was our savior at either tackle of guard. Think about how that one turned out.
I like what I am seeing under our new regime. Yes, we have a lot of aging vets, but it seems like we have young, cheaper players waiting in the wings. Even if it doesn't work out with a particular player, Mac just needs to keep finding project players to fill the funnel. I like the fact that the FO likes a lot of these players as far down as the practice squad. I don't think we got this with Tanny or Idzik. It seemed like outside of the stars on this team, they had their JAGs that got us to the necessary roster requirements and that was about it. Hopefully we keep the funnel full of prospects every year.
I don't recall this staff or Rex's staff saying anything of the sort about Aboushi being our savior. Aboushi did a good job, he was let go because Bowles wanted to send a message, after he was arrested and the charges were dropped, he still received a one game suspension from the NFL. Bowles screwed up, but in his defense, he did not know the players and who were the contributors to the team. He may have forgiven him or given him a fine, and not cut him if he had known that he was the best guy the jets had in regards to depth on the offensive line.
Yeah, we lost out on Aboushi because he was claimed by the Texans, where he's been solid. He was also about 100000000000000x better than Winters (not saying much) the year before.
Not quite what I said. Rex's staff said that they liked Aboushi which made many on this board look at him as our saviour.
I'm not sure what blocking scheme the Texans use, but one thing to keep in mind is that the Jets switched from a zone finesse-type blocking scheme to a power man-to-man type scheme with Bowles. That is why Carpenter did so much better than most expected. The Seahawks had used the zone/finesse scheme and that didn't suit Carpenter's skills/mindset. Aboushi had done pretty well in the zone scheme with the Jets, but how would he have fared here in a man-to-man/power scheme? If the Texans use the man/power scheme, then we have some idea. If not, then we don't. One thing I remember reading about Aboushi his rookie season was that he lacked functional strength. He may have worked and changed that, but perhaps not. Thus, he may not have been a good fit here anyway, and may not have been any better than Winters or Giacomini. That may also be why Giacomini hasn't done as well here as he had with the Seahawks.
I liked Aboushi when he was here, but the specific knock on him was always that his arms are just too short, which limits the leverage he can get (as you say "functional strength"), which is all the more important in a power scheme.
Not sure what to say about the overall decision to move Aboushi, except it did seem to concern some locker room issues. But in the end what was said about him by the prior CS is not all that relevant, imo, to whether Qvale might be a starter for this team. I see Cimini reports that Breno is a likely goner as a casualty, due to his being overpaid, with cap savings significant enough to make that happen. I wish we'd seen more of Qvale in games to assess how strong a candidate he might be to take over. But other than his not being played much, all the news I've heard about him has been positive. Still I don't see the CS just inking him in as the starter. But he should be in camp given the chance to win the position. hat would be great, but even if that happens the OL is in need of much attention.
I am going to go out on a limb and guess that Aboushi was cut because he wasn't all that good to begin with.
Right. We just gave the job to craptastic Brian Winters because hey, Aboushi wasn't all that good to begin with. That makes sense.
Locker room issues? Outside of a traffic stop in NJ that turned up a small amount of weed (one game suspension), Aboushi seemed to be a good 'team' soldier. If anything, I'll remember him more as the target of bigoted witch hunts that tried to paint him as a Muslim extremist and anti-Semite.
I did not mean to suggest he was a proven problem in the locker room. To me locker room issues means off field issues that might or did spill into the locker room. But I should have said off field issues to be more clear.
edit: to me off the field issues that spill into the locker room mean "Jerry Sandusky" ; -) otherwise Sheldon Richardson's arse would've hit the door. But I see what you mean.
