But why gamble on players that "could develop" into a similar player, when we already have one that HAS developed into that guy. So if Richardson or Williams become as productive, should the Jets ditch them as well? Losing the NFL's #6th most productive guy in sacks, is not going to be easy to make up for. Obviously it's easier on the cap, but the whole purpose of developing players is so that if they become pro bowler you can lock them up long term. Williams could one day be that guy, but he didn't have as good a rookie year as Richardson did, and Richardson is one off field issue from getting banned for a year (and could still miss significant time this coming year). Mo is unique in that he hasn't held out for big bucks when he easily could have the past 2 years. He's a class act, locker room leader, and genuinely a good guy to have around. I don't think MM has any intention of letting him walk. Players like that don't grow on trees. Mo Wilks also makes everyone else on the D line better. If Mo walks, it's virtually guaranteed that the production of Harrison, Richardson and even Williams will drop off.
It hurts but I believe that it makes sense to pay Mo. He's an all-pro, a great citizen and home grown.
t me this makes it seems less likely we keep him... a sign we cant reach terms on a number. id expect a trade. no way we can afford him at 15M
Too much. A more practical question would be if it would make any sense to use the transition tag on Mo instead of the franchise tag.
I think he gets tagged at the DT number. No way that is happening. I don't see a separate 3-4 NT tag number.
Can't do this unless the Jets are planning to match whatever offer sheet (poison pills included) that Mo gets. The transition tag means no compensation.
I am not sure how much lower the transition tag amount would be but it would be one way to get him committed to a long term deal (it would be a roll of the dice giving other teams the opportunity to set the possible terms).
For the record: Francise tag: $15.4 mil Transition Tag; $12.5 mil unless we match an offer sheet from another team (or don't match and let him go).
Jets are buying themselves more time, otherwise he walks completely, and he'll more than likely be in a Raiders uni. Remember Dez and DT from last year? They were tagged.
The jets don't need him at 15 million a year and I for one don't want him on the team for that. The Jets already have one overpayed player on defense and don't need another one. Go with Richardson, Williams and Harrison. For the love of god find someone who can get to the QB.
We will find the dough to keep him......Really not worried about it...More worried about Snacks and who's gonna be our RB
Sorry to disagree but it does make sense because if he screws up again we lose threefold: 1) for not trading him now, 2) for losing him if and when he screws up again and IMHO he will and 3) his value will be practically worthless when he returns. So I say get rid of the headache now, period. As for as compensation he is worth something at least a 3rd and maybe also a 5th.
I don't care if you disagree. That's fine. No one ever said we had to agree. My question is, How do you think that the Jets will get anything of value for him now? He's lucky he isn't going to jail. He will likely be suspended for 6-8 games next season. He's proven that he's pretty stupid and has a big mouth. IMO not many teams are going to be willing to give up anything of value in return for him. Many wouldn't even want him on the cheap because of the negative publicity and headaches players like him cause. So a 3rd round pick is value for a player who was a first round pick, a former rookie of the year, and has played at a very high level since entering the league? We definitely don't see eye to eye on this situation.
Your right we do not. His value is now (and it is diminished he is not worth a 1st round and I don't even think a 2nd esp. with his history) not after a suspension and your point about negativity = less value is suspect when one views Philly taking MV.
His length, leadership, and consistency is pretty unique to this group. Sheldon has different abilities and Leo is more similar in terms of playing style. Time will tell if he is a leader.
I hear what you're saying and basically agree in principal. That said, it's not just a matter of it being "easier on the cap," but rather being possible under the cap and not having to lose several other players you want to keep and not being able to improve the team. There's also a matter of value. While Mo has been our best player, imo he's not worth $15-$16 million per year. You claim he hasn't held out for big bucks the last 2 years. I disagree. Has he stayed out of TC to make his point? No, but the Jets have made numerous attempts to sign him to an extension and he has steadfastly refused. Maybe Idzik went cheap and lowballed Mo, but I doubt seriously if Mac has. IMO the only possible reason that the Jets have been unable to sign Mo to an extension already is that he is seeking JJ Watt level money or wants an unreasonable amount of guarantees or something. He's not worth that much. Richardson has a big mouth and if he straightens his act up, he may want that kind of money, but at this point, I don't think he gets it. Williams has not said a word, so we can't "assume" that he's going to want top dollar as well. With regards to Mo making everyone on the DL better, that's possible. It's also very possible, and perhaps even more likely that they make each other better, since they are all so good. So Mo leaving doesn't guarantee anything in terms of Harrison, Richardson's or Williams' play.
