The Ravens make sense but they don't trade away draft assets. DaBallhawk mentioned a trade revolving around Osemele for Mo which would be awesome but I have to wonder if they would want to do that. I think the Browns and the Cowboys are simply picking way too high in the draft for us to get equal value as they won't be trading their top 10 picks for him.
Excellent points. I read somewhere that a potential candidate could be the Oakland Raiders. Picking in the teens and with lots of cap space.
I've been against trading Mo but the 14th pick would be pretty valuable and best case scenario in a trade.
exactly what I was thinking. First, $8M for a good DB is NOT overpaying, but with Revis on the team and Mo with his hand out we just can't afford it. I really don't see him taking a pay cut, but getting him down to $5-6M would be a pretty solid move.
Given the cap situation and the need to sign other FAs, I think Cro and his $8 million salary need to go. Revis is still playing at a high level. A lot of money is invested in Skrine and he's a very good young player. Marcus Williams has played very well the past two seasons (aside from his disastrous game at FS in Oakland). I think they need to go with those guys as the top 3 corners and hope McDougle and Milliner can contribute. I'd bring back Walls for about the minimum and consider spending a day three pick on a corner. Honestly, Williams over Cro on the outside is probably an upgrade
The cap hits for our defensive backs are as follows: CB Darrelle Revis $17,000,000 CB Antonio Cromartie $8,000,000 CB Buster Skrine $7,750,000 FS Marcus Gilchrist $5,625,000 CB Dee Milliner $4,028,424 SS Calvin Pryor $2,335,433 CB Dexter McDougle $764,719 CB Marcus Williams $600,000 SS Dion Bailey $525,000 SS Ronald Martin $525,000 Total: $47,153,576 That's a little bit less than a third of the cap. Cromartie is as good as gone. He'd have to take a $6 million pay cut to even consider keeping him. You can't tie that much money into one position grouping and have any chance of keeping a competitive roster together. And Antonio Allen is a free agent. Skrine seems like a logical bet to do the signing bonus restructure since he's young enough to want to guarantee he's on the roster for the next couple years. I'm not sure what we save on cutting Milliner but it seems like it makes sense to just cut him lose at this point. Go into the year with Revis, Williams, Skrine, a lower end free agent along the lines of Brandon Boykin, Coty Sensabaugh, Sterling Moore, Jeremy Lane, and draft a late round corner to compete with Mcdougle/resign Walls.
I don't think it's fair to judge him on his performances at free safety. That's an incredibly hard transition with a week of practice to do. We ideally need some lower end veterans at the bottom of the roster for injury insurance but I think we have to go into next year with Williams as our #2. We simply don't have the funds to try to go after guys like Prince Amukamara, Greg Toler, Sean Smith, or Leon Hall unless we trade Mo and never look back. We should focus a lot more on formulating an edge rushing plan/hoping Mauldin progresses which means we have to blitz less and leaves a secondary of Revis/Pryor/Gilchrist/Skrine/Williams more than serviceable given all the money tied up there.
I agree with this. If the Jets can't iron out a long term deal in the coming weeks I think Oakland makes the most sense. 1st, 3rd, and future 5th for Mo Money. This is of course all assuming Sheldon is in the Jets future plans. If not, they will let Mo ride out the tag designation and take the season to work the deal out.
I think the second part of your post hits the nail on the head. Personally, I am fine with exactly what we have DB wise, with the real focus needing to be on generating more blitz pressure off the edge. If we do in fact trade Mo to let's say Oakland and have 2 1st round picks I would be astonished if 1 of them wasn't spent on a pass rushing OLB.
cro needs to go, just for money reasons. if he was a pro bowler id still say we need to move on from him. we will stick with revis, but he is gonna be 31 next year, we need a long term replacment. maybe we have a guy to replace cro long term, i dont think we have 2 of those guys.
