Today Choo Choo Charlie popped into my head of all things lol remember? (50s and 60s commercial): "Once upon a time there was an Engineer , Choo Choo Charlie was his name I hear, He had an engine and sure had fun he used good and plenty candy to make his train run..." Haha
I figured the phins would at least try moving Coples back inside where he played semi decently. He was kind of forced into that LB role when he was always looked awkward in it. I bet Rex picks him up.
If only the guy played like a guy who has something like that, ya know? His toughness, strength and talent aren't even a question. He just has a strange meh kinda way of going about things which is odd considering all he did to fit into that stupid LB role Rex stuck him in. We knew he had a questionable motor coming out, I'm sure the move and subsequent failure in his new role. Has only helped in dousing his fire even more. All that said if we moved Mo I wouldn't mind bringing him back in a backup role at DE. Can't see him wanting to come back after being unceremoniously cut and being relegated to mop up. Still, stranger things have happened.
Still can't believe we picked Coples with Chandler Jones still available. I read that Rex told Chandler he was the pick if he was there, then when we picked Coples it waa reported that Chandler was very upset.
He lived up the street from where I live. Local lore has him as a demented old guy that would rage out of his house in his boxer shorts yelling at anyone who disturbed his privacy. He would often be carrying a shotgun. Lots of weird shit went on in my neighborhood back in the 60's 70's & 80's...books and films have been made.
Wacky guy but a damn good athlete. Played for the Rochester Royals and briefly with the Celtics, the Brooklyn Dodgers (only 1 game), the Chicago Cubs and a ton of minor leagues and he was drafted by the Chicago Bears. Was trying to find video, he hit a homer one game and ran the bases backwards and I remember reading after a HR he ran trotted the bases then slid into home lol. _
What?? For real? I always thought Coples would be the pick if he was there, and that Chandler Jones was a backup.
I guess he had some skills...per Wikipedia- During his Army service, Connors moonlighted as a professional basketball player, joining the Rochester Royals and helping to lead them to the 1946 National Basketball League championship.[5]Following his military discharge in 1946, he joined the newly formedBoston Celtics of the Basketball Association of America. Connors left the team for spring training with Major League Baseball's Brooklyn Dodgers. He played for numerous minor league teams before joining the Dodgers in 1949, for whom he played in only one game. He joined the Chicago Cubs in 1951, playing in 66 games as a first baseman and occasional pinch hitter.[6] In 1952, he was sent to the minor leagues again to play for the Cubs' top farm team, the Los Angeles Angels. He was drafted by the NFL's Chicago Bears, but never suited up for the team. He is also credited as the first professional basketball player to break a backboard. During warmups in the first-ever Boston Celtics game on November 5, 1946 at Boston Arena, Connors took a shot that caught the front of the rim and shattered an improperly installed glass backboard.[7] In 1966, Connors played an off-field role by helping to end the celebrated holdout by Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Don Drysdaleand Sandy Koufax when he acted as an intermediary during negotiations between the team and the players.[8] Connors can be seen in the Associated Press photo with Drysdale, Koufax and Dodgers general manager Buzzie Bavasi announcing the pitchers' new contracts. He was a fanatic Dodger fan...born in Brooklyn I believe.
I forget who reported it, maybe it was Costello. But yeah, I was shocked. I know Rex really liked QC, but Chandler had a fantastic year when he came out.
Taking a guy with a questionable motor in college and making him play a position that doesn't suit his skill-set certainly didn't help things
Is that true about Connors? If so, was that Clint Eastwood movie where he played a similar character based on Connors? What neighborhood?
Sounds like jimmy Piersoll. There was a pretty good movie about him w/Anthony Perkins, I believe, I remember seeing
