Great move by Lamoriello. Not sure what the Sens are thinking on that one.

The Sens did acquire Elisha Cuthbert at least. So a pretty fair trade.

I don't understand it either, but maybe they feel they don't have anyone other than Karlson and by doing this they don't have to worry about developing any defensive players or maybe because the talent level in the NHL is diluted because of over expansion, the senators don't have any defensive players to develope.

Senators hurting their future by trying for a playoff push.

No one wanted that horrible Phaneuf contract. Toronto finally found a sucker.

Phaneuf even now is not going to be the missing piece. It's going to be ugly in 3-4 years.

Johnny Hockey and two teammates got scratched from tonight's game against Toronto for allegedly showing up to practice hungover (partying too hard with the Super Bowl).

First Johnny Football, now Johnny Hockey.

NHL Players alway get the hottest ass I swear. That's a hell of a motivator for a poor Canadian kid from Moose Jaw or Kitchner.

There is no future for the Ottowa senators defense, they are not hurting themselves. They have solidified their defense, he will be part of the second pairing on their defense. That's not a difficult job, when most teams don't have very good second lines, let alone a decent 2nd center.

It's not a terrible contract when they are only paying what they would for any good defenseman. Buflyen just received a $38 million dollar extension, quality defenseman are becoming very difficult to come by because of the dilution of the talent level in the NHL.

Look at the quote below from Ottowa:

Murray said finding a left-shooting defenseman with experience and someone to play left wing in his top-6 forwards were two priorities he identified a year ago. He was hopeful that some of the Senators' younger defensemen could allow him to concentrate on finding a forward, but that hasn't been the case.

"The way our [defense] played this year, there wasn't a lot of growth there, there wasn't a lot of very good performances in a lot of games, so we had to address that first," he said. "So now that's been addressed."

The future is in terms of cap freedom so they can keep players/sign free agents down the road.

The Phaneuf contract is a millstone. No one wanted it.

You could argue he's being overpaid now, and he's only going to get worse in the later years of the deal.

Luckily for Dion Phaneuf, there’s a name further down this list that arguably qualifies as a worse contract than his, so he gets a bit of reprieve because of that – but not a lot. Phaneuf’s contract is, simply put, horrendous. While there’s no doubt that he’s a solid NHL player, he’s nowhere near a No. 1 defenseman – some might argue he’s not even a No. 3. Phaneuf, like Phil Kessel and many others before him, was and still is brutally miscast in Toronto, and it has effectively ruined whatever good he did for his career while he was still a Flame.

The Leafs miscalculated badly on Phaneuf (among others) and they are now paying for it dearly.

    trivia:

Chris Pronger was inducted into the Hall of Fame despite not retiring. He's on the Coyotes. He's 41 and hasn't played in years (and won't play) but he won't retire because he wants to keep collecting his salary.

    ^Lmao. What a beast.

Not a Phaneuf fan I like the move for Toronto. They'll be gunning hard for Stamkos this offseason and will be a contender in the draft lottery. Getting a Stamkos and/or Austin Matthews could be a franchise changer.

This article is not insightful, he is spewing out what we already know about salaries.

The problem the NHL faces which he does not address is the salary cap itself, none of those contracts can be picked up by most teams, even if a team wanted Karlsson, they probably can't do it anyway, because of the cap limitations.

Gary Bettman has been a disaster for the NHL, over expansion has killed the talent level, teams are now forced to play AHL players in place of true quality NHL players.

What do you think is going to happen to Toronto when and if they get Stamkos?

Hypothetically speaking he will get a huge long term contract, they will sign another center and maybe a defenseman. That's it, everyone else will be cheap role players that should be in the AHL or are lifelong 3 and 4th line players.

He may be worth the contract now but the team in general will be mired in mediocrity.

The contract that they need to get rid of is Mike Babcock, if anyone is overrated it's him.

    Every team wants Karlsson,,,

OTOH, no one wanted Phaneuf given his contract. Toronto had been trying to deal him for a while.

Nurse killing the Oilers. Takes a penalty, they manage to kill it off, then he takes another pretty quickly after he gets out of the box.
