1st round busts don't hurt like thwy used to unless you trade the farm to move up and it busts. Now with the rookie wage scale. That said, there probably isn't a pick he can make this year that is going to make this team win more games this year. We are either going to be a contender or not based on march's transactions not aprils. ( or may whenever they do the draft nowadays)
That's true from a cap perspective, but not from a team perspective. As you know, first round players are usually counted on to be immediate starters, and to be starters for at least 3-5 years, if not longer. This is even more true at a position of glaring need. Hence, when a first round pick busts it leaves a hole in the starting lineup and roster that does hurt and that pain continues for 5 seasons or more. The team is then forced to struggle without that need being met, and either has to sign a FA who will be more expensive, or to use future draft picks trying to fill that hole, rather than addressing depth or other needs.
