yes, someone making sense. Also, the racial argument doesn't even have to mean if you don't like him you are racist. Life is not that black & white (an awful pun in this context I know): What I mean by this is that his actions and behaviors are perceived slightly differently because of his race. It doesn't mean there's blatant racism like JetBlue is trying to dumb down the argument. Its simply the idea that his personality and stuff would probably be looked at a little differently if he was a white player. Which I mean I don't know how you can even argue against that myself but whatever.
The entire Jets team did this after beating the Bengals in 2009 IIRC. I doubt anyone here bitched about it.
the Jets team high-fived the fans AFTER the last home game of the season was over. Cam was running up and down the sidelines doing the Hulk Hogan WHILE the game was still going on, and it was only week 14. he should have been flagged actually for being outside the players box. big difference.
It's the in-game posturing & partying that annoys me. When you're stomping another team...wait till the clock hits zero before you start acting like you won Powerball... That's called sportsmanship.
i have no problem with either thing. i have no problem with guys getting up on the bench with a towel waiving it around to get the crowd into it. i think that was hilarious what cam did there. its obvious the fans loved it. he was on the sideline, yes outside the box but i dont think there was an actual play going on. its a matter of taste, you dont like it, i think it was pretty fantastic. and i am cool with disagreeing on that particular thing.
our Jets were a bunch of cocky assholes back then come on now. Mark Sanchez doing Holmes' homo airplane thing during the actual play... Shonn Greene going for a nap in the end zone in Foxboro, Holmes stopping and disrupting the setting of the football for that stupid first down sign after EVERY 1st down he made, Fat Rex celebrating like we already won the Super Bowl on the sideline every big play, Braylon Edwards backflipping, etc. It was like an entire team and coaching staff full of Cam Newtons That Jets team was 10X worse collectively than anything Cam has done and we absolutely loved it. Just like we'd worship Cam Newton if he was here QBing our Jets at the level he is right now in Carolina.
never liked Holmes either. not in the least. but him aside, the Jets were not a team of assholes sorry. i had no problem with the celebrations after beating the Pats in Foxboro, as those 'classy' assholes did that every where they went. Tomlinson got a little Charger payback watching it all go down.
Everything you mentioned happened during clutch time. In fact in Foxboro against the most classless team in the league. Holmes doing the first down thing is the only thing comparable. Doing it on the road against arguably the best team in the league (against our biggest rival) in the PLAYOFFS is completely different than Cam Newton against the Titans lol.
i totally agree, it is a matter of taste for most people. it is for you and me, and i don't have a problem with that. Cam is apparently oblivious to that though, and suggests it is about race. the attitude is, if they don't love me, they must just be racist. can't be any other reason as i'm so awesome. that lack of self awareness and conceit actually makes me like him less.
its completely different if its coming from your favorite team and you want it to be different haha. really though the same B.S.
I mean maybe. Celebrating is celebrating but what is the point in drawing comparisons if you throw out the context?
it's not just the fans who Cam has rubbed the wrong way in the past. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...-newton-reportedly-a-problem-at-2012-pro-bowl
No, you're stuck on everybody. I've clearly stated that my position is based on the likelihood that not only is it not everybody who dislikes him for race, it is the minority that dislike him because of his race which makes the racists the exception not the rule and not the reason for the majority's dislike of him. But that's not the discussion from the race advocates. The discussion is that the primary reason he is disliked is because of his race by the majority of the people who dislike him and therefore the dislike is reflective of greater race issues in our country. The entire discussion is dependent on it being the reason for the overall dislike, not that there are just a few racists who do. There are likely a few racists that hate Ryan Fitzpatrick but nobody is talking about that because exceptions to the rule are not worth discussing. Nobody gives a shit if there are a few racists who hate black players, the discussion is only meaningful if his overall dislike is based on race and that is clearly false.
No, the sr gunent that people judge his behaviors differently and as an element of his race has no merit. You can't even support it with anecdotal evidence that it us the reason the majority of people dislike him. There is no overwhelming opposition of black players celebrating by white fans that even remotely supports the concept that it impacts white fans opinions of black players. The illogically narrow argument that you are suggesting I've already show to be ridiculous -- that white people dont mind celebratory black players in any other sport or position but QB is such a sacred thing to white people that it causes us to judge black QB's differently. That is beyond stupid. The fact is people hate successful QB's -- even lovable and non-threatening Russel Wilson who was on the list, 1% behind Cam, which disputes the assertion of dislike being behavior/race driven. People hate white QB's and black QB's of all behavior, and the dislike just doesn't support the ridiculous argument that his behavior is perceived differently because of his race and therefore the dislike is about race. People hate him because he is successful and then look for reasons to justify it.
I haven't read through the entire thread but I'm glad to see people calling out the very obvious subconscious racism and the double standard of black celebrations/white celebrations. I think Cam is an amazing player, a total joy to watch. He's a biiiiit full of himself, but it's fucking entertainment people - get over it. I would be full of myself too if I was as big, talented, and good looking as him (although I am pretty good looking already ). I find guys like Russell Wilson and Tim Tebow - who constantly talk about their god and Christianity in public - FAR more obnoxious.
I know what pisses most people off. America loves nice Christian boys. But I'm a subversive atheist smartass. I find outward religious displays very obnoxious. I don't talk about being an atheist/agnostic in public, because frankly, I don't think anyone gives a shit. Religion should be personal and private, as Jesus Christ himself said. So, yeah, Russell Wilson thanking God for being a Seahawks fan and Tim Tebow dropping to his knees in prayer every four seconds on the football field is kinda obnoxious.
So it's okay for you to find displays of religion obnoxious but somebody else can't find dancing celebrations obnoxious without being accused of racism? Glad to know you get to dictate what is merely obnoxious and what isn't obnoxious and is racism if you are opposed to it. Or more likely you simply enjoy being a victim even if you have to create the victimization.
I never said everyone who dislikes Cam is racist. There are plenty of people who hate showboating and celebrating in sports regardless of skin color, and that's fair. I was pointing out that he gets a disproportionate amount of flak from people because he's a confident black QB who doesn't play by the conventional conservative whiteboy quarterback rules. That's the underlying theme in all of the Newton criticism. Public religious displays will always be obnoxious.
