Here's my problem with the AI buildup: every technological advance is immediately militarized to the highest extent it can be. That's evolution at work at it's rawest terms. A new feature, like teeth, becomes available by random mutation or process of selection and when it becomes an effective tool the race is on to exploit it. Bigger teeth, sharper teeth, jagged teeth, hooked teeth, etc, nature is going to keep grinding on until it finds the optimal design and a lot of things are going to get eaten in the process, most still wriggling, screaming, squeaking, et al ( So AI advances in things like automation, information processing, probability and selection are already happening and built into a lot of systems. What we don't currently have is full autonomy and ideation. AI's require human intervention at some point at the beginning, during the operation of, or at the end of their full routines. No drone decides that it is time to launch now and authorizes the launch itself. No drone decides that a new type of target has entered the field of battle and become a priority. No drone decides that combat operations are over and leaves the field independently. No drone can declare war and then act under that status. No drone determines right or wrong, logic or illogic, life or death. All of those things are determined by the human controllers of the drones. At the moment the drones themselves are not a danger, just the consequences of bad human decision while directing them or the risk that the enemy will compromise them and take them over. However there will come a point not to far in the future where AI will present the opportunity to create truly autonomous objects and that ability will be weaponized by somebody. It's in the nature of evolution to use a capability that gives you any advantage over your foe if there is a real chance that they might use it against you. So initially the AI's that do this will likely be failsafes. They'll be put in for the situations when the drones controller has been compromised/killed/put out of communication. They'll allow the drone to keep fighting in those situations. The AI's required to allow that level of autonomy will be on the edge of self aware. They'll be constantly checking all the myriad things they had to check but they'll also have to add a few things that were under the controllers power before they went away. They'll have to be aware of their own position on the battlefield and the safety of their posture. They'll have to be able to balance their mission vs their continued presence on the battlefield. Is that an important target or should I preserve myself at this point and wait for a more important one? What is my remaining fuel load? Does that change my decision? Am I going to be able to make it back to the rendevous to refuel and rearm? What is the probability that anybody still exists at the rendevous? The neural networks in play at this point in the research labs at Bell and IBM and elsewhere are on the edge of awareness at this point. They're not there yet but they will get there at some point. They will be weaponized when that happens and humanity will be much worse off at that point.
Could you direct me to some sources you're reading on this stuff Br4d? I used to be really into AI, even took some high level classes in it and wrote a very simple neural network of my own. I was left thoroughly unimpressed with where the technology was at. That was well over a decade ago though and I have not kept up with it at all. It sounds like things have changed dramatically.

Unclassified things that are having a major impact on advances in the technology are autonomous vehicles and manufacturing equipment. None reaching the self-aware stage or even close to it at this point. However that's what's in the open and the games AI's are getting pretty close.

Not that I'm shouting down your education, but what makes you think you had an inkling of the actual existing technology? The SR-71 held the airspeed record for 20 years before its technology was ever declassified.

Definitely new planet and Jets punter! The new planet is cool because people have been speculating about planet X for years. They found Pluto looking for it, then later found Eris, which made them demote Pluto to bitch of the solar system status. Technically this planet still hasn't been confirmed, but if its mechanics are sound and it can put the right spin on the ball I think it could really work out for the future of the Jets.
I think the new planet as well, even though the planet does not need confirmation. The universe is made up of Billions of Galaxies, which in turn have Billions of stars and planets within them, and here we have some small minded scientists who probably is affected by the Zika virus , telling us we have to wait until they confirm it. Humans on the high horse again..
