He has already said he wants to play for Dallas. You don't say that shit before getting drafted. I hope he slips as far as possible. Then I hope the Giants draft him.
I don't have anything against him. I think he is a decent option later in the draft. However, I think you're putting a lot of stock in him by saying he could replace both our RBs/return kicks and in the next sentence say he doesn't have a lot of experience at RB. Expecting a 3rd/4th rounder to do all that is a ton to ask. Johnson is having his success because he is on one of the best teams in the NFL.
The guys that I have seen best in space this year are Aaron Green from TCU and DeAndre Washington of Texas Tech. Both guys are good candidates for that role IMO.
Operative phrase in my post being "and/or". You give him as much as he can handle; that doesn't mean we shouldn't acquire other RBs as well. That would still be the case even if we took Henry or Elliott. The last sentence which I highlighted in bold is disputable but what can't be argued is Johnson's talent, skill and versatility, which is why I made the comparison.
I feel like Elliot would be able to take on more, which is why he is a 1st. Every RB to run out of the Cards backfield this season has looked great. Not saying Johnson isn't the best RB in the last class
I'm an Alabama guy and Henry is not the style of runner I think we need. He is a great guy and won't be outworked but I think he needs a step or two to get going. This past year Jet backs were constantly getting hit behind the line and I think that problem would negate many of his best attributes. As are most Alabama backs, he is quite good at blitz pickup.
Aaron Green has some sick cuts with amazing change of direction. I think he's a 3 down back at the next level. I think Green and Elliot are both 3 down backs that can pass protect pretty decently. Big fan of Aaron Green.
That's going to happen when defenses stack the box to prevent the run. Jets were 10th overall in rushing offense, so despite the "hits behind the line" the Jets running game was fairly successful. Thinking back when the Giants had Jacobs, Ward and Bradshaw, that was a pretty awesome running attack that few teams could stop. I think with Henry, Ivory and Powell, the Jets could establish a similar running attack.
I disagree. Did you see the national title game between Alabama and Clemson? Eventually Henry had success, but how many times was he stopped behind the LOS or for little or no gain. I think that's exactly what would happen with the Jets. Ever once in a while he'd break a big gainer, but more often than not, he'd get stuffed. He has good speed for his size, but just isn't that fast or elusive and NFL DL and LBs are bigger and faster than collegiate DL and LBs, and I don't think he will anywhere near the same success in the NFL unless he gets behind a topnotch power blocking OL that can consistently open holes for him.
No, did not see the game but I saw an ESPN highlight show with about four different analysts commenting. It appeared to me that what happened was no different than what happened to the Jets during this past season (and previous seasons.) Clemson used the same strategy: stop Henry and make the Tide QB beat them. Unfortunately for Clemson, Corker had a great game. Any (good) team can shut down one weapon of an offense if it is determined to do so. The trick is to have your other weapons taking up the slack. Alabama was able to do that. This kid scored 28 TD's this season in the top collegiate conference in the country. You can't ask for a better resume than that. Even if he only scores 10/yr in the NFL, I'll take it. The reason, I would take him or Elliot (would actually prefer Elliot) is because I feel these guys offer the most help for the least risk in this draft. I'm not concerned if opposing teams want to continue stuffing the run on the Jets, even with Henry as a runner. They now have enough weapons in the passing game to make teams pay for their over-emphasis.
I'm not sold.on him yes he's bit and fast but he doesn't seem like he is someone that can make people miss and in the nfl you usually need to make at least 1 person miss to spring big runs
That's fair, but Ivory doesn't make people miss and he's pretty effective. Just think that having two bruisers in the backfield would tend to wear down opposing defenses. Would like to have a home run hitter back there but I don't see one with first round credentials.
You don't draft rbs in the 1st round unless your getting a Gurley. Lamar Miller should be the target he is a 3 down back.
Henry is a system running back behind an absolutely amazing offensive line. I think that is why Alabama running backs have mostly struggled in the NFL. Also, the NFL does not want typical I-formation running backs anymore. If this were 20 years ago, I'd say let's make every move possible to get him.
Every time an athlete makes it to the next level there is an adjustment and learning a new system. But as one high draftee said last year (forget his name) when asked the same question, "football is football, it's basically the same game." If I was a GM, I wouldn't care what other backs have done. What matters is the numbers he put up, his durability, and his desire to play in the NFL. That's all I'd care about. I understand a lot of people are reluctant to draft RB in round 1 because of the emphasis on the passing game these days. If there was a "can't miss" prospect at QB, I'd go there, maybe OLB or even WR, but I don't see any in this draft. I feel Elliot and Henry are far superior players at their position than any others worthy of a #20 pick. For a team like the Jets that still prefers to run, either of these two would elevate the Jets offense which still needs improvement.
I completely agree that just because a player comes from a specific system, that it means you should avoid him. I was more referring to how you have to take his production with a grain of salt, because of the system that Alabama has. They run the ball better than anyone - perhaps ever -in college football and it is because their o-line is always the best in the country. Therefore, if his production was inflated because of the system, than a 1st round pick would not be a good idea, especially when there are better players on the board.
Not opposed to trading down, but no way we take a RB before rd 3. You can get a good running back in the later rounds. We need to address our OL and LB's early on.
