Nice news to wake up to. I'm going to miss my Murphy but I'm happy with the off season. Our bullpen is still a bit worrisome but I'm so ready for baseball to start.

You had Flores crying, Wheeler phoning the GM, and Cespedes making a compromise so they can stay. What a change in this franchise where players are actually proud to be a Met and wanting to stay.

Is Uribe still on the team? I think he would be a really good role player to bring back.

We lost Kelly Johnson to the Braves, we need some experienced and professional bench players.

We had AAA guys on the bench last year as well. That hurt the Mets in the early part of the year.

Thats a huge advantage. Now if we need something when the deadline comes around it can be a small piece instead of having to blow our load trying to find "another Cespedes"..hard for that type of lightning to strike twice.

It was horrible going through the first 90 games knowing that we should've been better. Can only lose so many 2-1 and 3-2 games before it wears on a pitching staff.

Now our staff followed by a 7-8-9 of Reed , Bastardo and Familia looks pretty damn formidable.

Factor in Comforto's offense (who now wont be asked to do as much as he would've if not for Cespedes) , plus up the middle for the defense will be improved , we just dont really have a lot of weaknesses as it stands right now.

Off and running from Game 1 next season. The way it should be.

He's making $27.5 million next year vs $20 million from the Nats. No gamble there at all. And if he struggles he's still guaranteed another $48 million for only two years. He can easily make up and exceed the $25 million he is leaving on the table after this contract expires even if he is just a good player.

For Cespedes, if he is great he can cash out his $27.5 this year and sign a 4-5 year deal after the season at a minimum of $100 million. This truly seems to be no risk for him.

But he's gambling in hopes of landing an Upton-like deal next offseason. Yes the way his contract is set up protects him incase of injury or a down year, but those are extreme or unlikely occurrences.

That's his goal with this deal. To land an overpayment contract for more years than he's worth.

Guaranteed if he has another year this year like last, he'll get 6-7 years for 150+ mil.

Weaker FA class will help him tremendously if he hits the open market again.

He's still a FA but with De Aza, Plawecki, Flores, Tejada, and Lagares our bench is set.

He puts up 35hrs and 100+ RBI's and he won't hit the open market again.. Call me crazy, but do you think the prospect of a Fan Revolt may have prodded the Coupons to make a deal? Can you imagine planes flying over CitiField dragging banners blasting the Coupons?? :)

Honestly I think the owners lucked out tremendously. I think when the news came out last night they were more shocked than any of us are that he took this deal.

I dont wanna say that they never wanted Cespedes back. Cause obviously they offered him a deal , but I dont think they would've been crushed if he signed somewhere else. Probably would've been happier to save that 27 mil this year to be honest.

They know the fans are sheep and would've shown up no matter what. And could've based half the season on the hopes of making another trade deadline move. Glad that wont be the case now.

And like I said previously in this thread , this signing bumps their attendance up in a big way. On a Tuesday night in June against the Padres they will now be a hot ticket and even hotter ticket for the premier matchups.

IMO the guy fills seats so that makes even more sense to have resigned him.

But but you seem to be forgetting that even if he has a bad year that won't get him a new contract, he has a guaranteed 3 year $75 million deal. So even if he struggles all he has to make up from the Nats offer is the $25 million difference over two years. In baseball money players like Cespedes get 2 year $25 million dollar deals in their sleep. Even with this contract there is no way he doesn't make $100 million over the next five years. Even if just average that's a guarantee. But with this deal he doesn't have to lock himself for 5 years and likely makes more.

I think next year we have to start worrying about Harvey, right? I hope they and fans aren't resign in the idea that he isn't retainable.

I think he will def make more than 100 mil over the next 5 years too. But he wasnt looking for that 5 for 100 and nothing else. Otherwise he probably would've taken it. Like I said he wants a bigger contract than that. He was looking for 6 years and probably 120+. If the Nats offered that to him I think he would've already signed there.

And Im not fooled by the 3 years. Unless injury strikes or he turns into Jason Bay , he will not be here for 3 years. And honestly if the latter happens I could see him taking a similar deal next offseason to what the Nats offered just to get some more security incase he is indeed on the downside on his career.

To me this is a 1 year deal.

I'm thinking Flores still plays nearly every day this year.

They're giving him a first base mitt in spring training so you figure he'll be the guy like Murph and Cuddy last year to spell Duda.

He's going to play a lot for Wright, at least once a week and especially when Wright DH's.

And you figure he'll still play some SS and 2nd base.

I think they like his bat.
