Sounds awesome. Pack all the liberals into the California coast and then set off massive detonations along the San Andreas fault.
NYC and LI aren't working together with the political ideologies of the rest of the state. They have the majority vote and the state politics will continue to be progressive liberal. The rest of the state mostly doesn't agree with the politics of the city and LI but are forced to deal with it or move. Many are choosing the latter, btw. What is so intrinsically American about this?
so because some people disagree in the present we should completely remap the whole state? by the way this isn't just a NY thing anyway. SC is majority Republican, the capital city of Columbia is strongly liberal. Yet they are strong armed by the rest of the state. Should we give Columbia, SC its own state? How about Colorado- Denver & Boulder are significantly different politically than the rest of the state. Those areas are very liberal yet prior to Obama the state had gone republican in every election since 1967. Should we give Denver & Boulder their own state? (this conversation is actually happening as well) - - How about Texas. the political values of the people of Austin, TX are very liberal yet they are strong armed by the rest of the state which is conservative. How unfair. They should get their own state. We need like 100s of states now because some people disagree and they aren't getting their way and that's unfair. see how silly this is? by the way, I'd be in the proposed "New Amsterdam" state and since congressional representation goes by population, my new state would go from 27 representatives in the house (NY) to like 4, our biggest cities being Buffalo & Rochester, which would put us on par nationally with Oklahoma, with significantly less financial strength than even Oklahoma as Tulsa and Oklahoma City are on stronger footing than Rochester& Buffalo.. So I'm not sure people in New Amsterdam would really want that after all.
It's not just "some people", and you didn't answer my question. The majority in the rest of the state disagree with the politics of downstate. It's a huge state. People get frustrated when nearly everyone they interact with see things a different way than how they're done. It doesn't feel much like "for the people by the people" when it's a bunch of people from an area far and away making all the decisions. The finances of the situation are more complex than just looking at it as it is today and subtracting the city money. You also have to subtract the city politics which put a noose around businesses. Fracking would probably be big business in New Amsterdam, especially the southern tier. This New Amsterdam stuff should probably be it's own thread.
It is just some people and I'm not sure you can definitively say the rest of the state always disagrees with downstate anyway or that they have a problem with representation. Living upstate I also find it quite ironic that folks are always pissed about this except when it benefits them. For example, NY state has some of the very best public schools in the country both at the secondary school and collegiate levels, with some of the highest paid teachers throughout the state. Having the massive tax base in the NYC area is the primary reason why. We can split and have the public education system of Nebraska though... also- I personally support fracking but even in a proposed "New Amsterdam" I don't think fracking approval would be a slam dunk. There are lots of anti-fracking politics coming out of Rochester especially and Buffalo areas. I will agree that this is probably better for a different thread.
Here's the last election for governor. http://www.politico.com/2014-election/results/map/governor/new-york/#.Vp0jjfkrKUk It's more than just "some people" voting red in the area's outside the city.
Holy shit, the Bronx went 86% democrat. I mean I always knew it was bad in those areas, but nowhere near that.
Actually, all of the suburban counties of New York, including most definitely LI, vote solidly Republican and have for as long as I can remember. You have NYC and some of the population centers/SUNY cities upstate that reliably vote Democratic. That's just the way it is. Some things will never change.
Does that represent anything more than the presidential race? I'd be fairly surprised if local races and representative elections broke down like that.
Travel to flyover country. A lot of folks think all of NY is NYC. More than a few are surprised to hear there is farm land in upstate.
Amazing! Politico has misnamed at least three counties in New York State. The counties of Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island do not exist.
But even you would agree that he has MORE of a chance winning the general election than he does winning the State of New York?
This is the attitude that leaves us with the Romney's of the world. Maybe people actually do want a conservative instead of a rino. Maybe the growing independent voter population just assumes they'd prefer to leave it to the professional democrats instead of the fake republican democrats. Maybe they have more of an appetite for someone who is actually different.
