going out monday afternoon for the hail mary . just a tough season. warm weather and bumper acorns kept them moving at night and barely at all, at least thats the excuse i am using. thursday we will do the christmas eve rabbit hunt, move some cameras and look at some different stand locations.
in the words of fred bear "next season's hunt begins the minute the last hunt ends"

on a side note, put a camera in the woods behind my job just to see what was tearing up the trees, found the buck i was seeing where i hunt about a mile away. i guess he can read the no hunting signs.
nsn, are you in an antler restriction zone? it seems to work in 3j which is near me. hoping it goes statewide soon

no restrictions here. last deer i took was a 4 pointer that taunted me. I had seen him around and told myself I wasn't going to take him but he circled me, then walked about 20 yards in front of me and turned to make a perfect target. Just stood there pointing and laughing.

good luck on your last effort of the season.

so went out monday afternoon, pushed a doe that was bedded close to my stand. i pushed a lot of deer going into that stand this year, going to move it to get a better entry point. didn't see anything else. today however, the 8 i had on camera all summer came running across my work chasing a fawn. spent 2 months looking for him and the day after the season ends he comes to me. deer gods have some sense of humor.

anyone in the market for treestands this winter, this is a great deal. between me and my brother we have 7 of these:

I've never hunted coyotes - got a nice audio call device for christmas with a remote so I can mimic a fawn in distress or a number of other ones. I figured I'd just throw some chicken out there with the speaker and setup at a distance with the rifle.

how do you go for them?

wouldn't worry about the chicken. best to get a decoy to go with the call. check dicks or gander. something moving to keep them focused away from you. they will try to circle down wind of the call so set the call(and decoy) as far as you can upwind from your setup.distressed rabbit is the go to call. coyotes will come in hot so be ready to shoot on the run, especially if they can't get down wind. they will just charge. its tough hunting and nothing like the 400 yard shots you see in the mid west. eastern coyotes different animal different geography.

heres a link to a decoy. i like the base type vs the stakes. frozen ground is hard to stake a decoy in:

    good luck

. like to call at first and last light, or if there is snow and a bright moon. or anytime once the snow is deep and food is harder for them to catch. if you are going to use one you have to make the lens red but i don't use them

so, I bought a 308 a week before gun season and finally got around to sighting it in today. I tried rushing to do it after work a couple of times prior to deer season but didn't get it done right. I got quickly frustrated and wondered if I had some issue with scopes since I never was a good sgot with them. much better with open sights. anyway, 6 bullets got me on the bull at 50 yards today and 5 more bullets satisfied me with a nice tight group near it.

so then I tried coyote hunting for the first time at dusk. set out my motion decoy and audible decoy doing a distressed cotton tail.

it wasn't but 15 minutes before one came running across the field. I pulled up to take aim and saw nothing but black. forgot to take the god damn lens covers off the scope. so I tried 3 shot just pointing the gun with no sights but no luck.

sat for about 15 more minutes before I started hearing shit behind me in the woods. I didn't like that being it was dark and I was luring in coyotes. need to rethink my setup, maybe I'll try doing some kind of blind in the middle of the field instead of sitting on the tree line.

    Interesting first attempt anyway. lol

Damn. Good stuff. Sounds like you had a good setup. How close did he get to the decoy?

Probably about 10 yards. I took my first shot at that point and the two more and he took off. all without sights. lol
