Yeah I don't really get what the Browns don't get. Granted he spent a year as a head coach but they need someone whose dominant and has done it before to come in and completely change the culture there.
The browns should have made Coughlin the richest coach in any sport ever and ggave him complete control. That was the only move that would have gotten them any cred. Right now the o/u on hue jackson is 23.5 months
He's 70 next year. That's not a hire you make lightly because you could easily wake up one Sunday morning and find out the coach passed away Saturday night.
I think Coughlin would have been a good choice if there was a team ready to win in the next few years...Bengals would have been a good place if they fired Lewis.
He'd be a good choice for a team set to win now. If attitude was the problem on the team, well he'd change that culture in a hurry. If he goes to a team in a total build situation he's just going to be there for 2 years as they use him as cover to clean house and start over. So Bengals or Browns would have been ok, although depressing for Browns fans.
a bit dramatic even for you brad. coughlin changes the culture, he was the only candidate that did that. pretty sure he wasn't going to drop dead between week 4 and week 5 of 2016.
If you're the 49ers with a heavy rebuild in the offing you can't commit to a 70 year old head coach. He might change the culture but the odds on him being there to seal the deal for you are iffy. Marv Levy and George Halas are the oldest NFL head coaches ever. They both retired at 72. So hiring a 70 year old to complete a 3 year plan seems very iffy.
Marv Levy retired nearly 20 years ago as coach. Halas retired nearly 50 years ago. A 70 year old today is a lot different than a 70 year old 20 and 50 years ago. _
what does this have to do with the 49ers? we are talking about a browns team has to aspire to be considered irrelevant at this point. lower than we were pre parcells. coughlin could have been their BP. instant credibilty.
He'd change the culture around the Browns but again, he's not likely to still be coaching to take advantage of that culture change in a few years. He'd have been an ok hire by them to setup the next guy but when you're the Browns you can't take that approach. Next year never comes for the Browns. They're in Groundhog Day every season.
One thing to keep in mind is the Giants pretty much are keeping the rest of their coaches in place...I'm sure that would have been a huge negative for Coughlin in putting together a good staff.
