When your ST's are as bad as the Jets ST's were this year you have to fire somebody. You can't go into next year with any chance that the ST's suck again because of the coach. Whether they sucked this year due to April's coaching ability is not clear but there's no way they could take the chance on having bad ST's next year with the same guy in charge. My take is that the ST's sucked because the roster was put together poorly from that perspective and the coaching didn't make up the deficit, however the roster is a multi-year thing, there's only so much you can do in a year with it. If the ST's suck next year, well you need to look further up the food chain to find out who is accountable. Bowles needs to make a good hire to coach them and Maccagnan needs to give the guy better personnel than the last couple of guys have had. You can't use rejects on special teams and expect to get anything good out of the units.
I think Westy is losing it. Every aspect of our STs was horrible. Punting, kicking, punt and KO coverage, returns. When it's that widespread and systemic, the guy in charge has to go. I'm surprised he lasted the season to be honest.
I agree with westhoff. Quigley cant punt to the left. true. why in the world is there a punter on the roster who cant punt to one entire side of the field. not to mention that punter sucking in every other aspect. he lost his kicker for the year and had a guy who was previously hosting a radio show fill in one week! forget the return men. kerley? unless he got to use cro, we had nothing for him there either. I cant blame april for not turning chicken shit into chicken salad. i dont think this falls on bowles, i think it falls on mac. ST was awful, but it was going to be under basically anyone
april wasnt the guy in charge, which i think is the issue. thats like a restaraunt owner blaming the line cook if the food sucks when the general manager is buying crappy frozen stuff from walmart or something
Any word on who the next Special Teams coach is gonna be?What happend to Keith Armstrong or whatever his name was
No STs coach is in charge of personnel. That's ridiculous. He was in charge of the STs unit, as they all are, and he didn't get the job done. THAT's the issue. It's absurd that a professional athlete, a punter in the NFL can' t learn to punt to the left. For all we know, April may have assured Bowles and Mac that he could teach Quigley to do that. It's also funny that they got better as the season went along. That shows that they weren't as awful as they had played. If they were really so awful, they wouldn't have made much, if any, improvement. So if nothing else, April is to blame for not getting quicker results. Some people can teach, but it's trial and error and takes a long time. Coaches in the NFL don't have a long time. It's produce now, or you're gone. It's also telling that everywhere he has coached, April's STs units have ranked near the bottom of the NFL. Surely you aren't going to try to tell us that the talent on every one of those units was awful.
I believe Atlanta denied us talking to him. There's a few other guys now in line, I saw somewhere but forget who. Semeni on the ST's, everything's gotta get better: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-je...-were-the-jets-on-special-teams-well-tell-you
it is absurd. which is why its not on april, its on mac. he watched our special teams suck for 17 weeks and didnt try at all to fix it. just being in charge of a unit doesnt mean you can realistic get results. if you have bad players your going to get pretty bad results. there really is no excuse for quigley to have even been on the roster for that bills game, or for us not to have brought in someone to return kicks. april was playing chess with checkers. our special teams personel across the board is the wrst in the league, and one of the worst in team history.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. There was only so much Mac could do in one season. You're not being realistic at all. He brought in a ton of players during the season, worked them out and added a number of new players. I'm sure if any of the players he worked out but didn't sign were better than players we already had, and we had the cap space, he would have signed them. There would have been no reason not to. Blaming Mac is just flat out stupid. The people to blame are Tanny, Idzik and Rex. Those are the buffoons who left the cupboard bare. Westhoff produced excellent STs play with not great talent. April's teams got better during the course of the season, so they definitely had the ability to play better. April just couldn't get them to do it early enough or often enough.
fair enough... i think mac did a solid job. im not criticizing his overall body of work.... im just criticizing him as far as there being a clear personel issue on special teams all season long, arguably costing us some games, and he didnt do anything about it. to me, its not aprils fault as much as it was mac/the lack of capable players. i disagree that westhoff didnt have great special teams talent... brad smith and justin miller were both excellent return men. certainly better then what we threw out this season. smith was excellent on kick coverage as well. weatherford was no stud but he certainly wasnt the mess that quigley was
