Possibly. Good question. I don't follow the Bungles or the NFL that closely, so didn't know about him. Was shocked to see that he went to college at Duke. I don't remember him at all, but then Duke football was pretty forgettable up until 2 or so years ago. He has really come on the last two seasons and looks good in coverage. If he comes at a reasonable price, he could be a decent pickup, but at 28 is older than I'd like. Mac may decide to re-sign Erin Henderson then look for depth in the draft, or a cheaper FA.
Yeah, the only reason I mentioned Jones was because his value would be way down, despite having a good season. I'd prefer the Jets stay away from people with character flaws as well. I bet your jaw would drop if the Jets traded Sheldon for Burfict and Jones. That's just what the Jets need. Another possible way to meltdown late in a game. One thing is for sure, this off season will be a big test for MM. Last year, he had tons of cap space to work with and the Jets needs were pretty obvious. He didn't address linebacker, however, and he put off signing Wilkerson until this year, which will make this off season very tricky. Hopefully it won't cost the Jets big time. The pressure is on.
There's always pressure for an NFL GM. Owners and fans have short memories when the coaches and GMs do something well or right, but LONG memories when they they screw up. The needs are just as obvious this year imo. The big difference is that he doesn't have the tons of cap space with which to work, and he has a TON of FAs on his hands and LOTS of decisions to be made. One small correction. He DID address the LB positions. He drafted Mauldin, signed Erin Henderson and Jamari Lattimore, improving the depth at OLB. I think he also improved the depth behind Mauldin and Reilly at OLB, although maybe only marginally. I think he put off signing Wilkerson for one big reason...he has no intentions of re-signing him. I think when Mac took the job it didn't take him long to figure out that there was too much cap space and talent tied up in the DL and not nearly enough at the LB positions. I think he also saw all the FA starters and key backups the Jets were going to have this season and saw the handwriting on the wall. Mo is their most marketable player, will garner the best return, and would have cost the most to keep. He knew that he couldn't re-sign Mo, Richardson and Snacks from a cost-effectiveness stand point or from the perspective of that Rex, Tanny and Idzik had built the defense ass backwards. Most of the talent in the front 7 needs to be in the LB corps, not the DL. The NFL is a passing league now and simply put, the Jets could not generate enough consistent pressure on opposing QBs to get off the field on 3rd and long, and they couldn't defend RBs and TEs over the middle. He knew that needed to change. I think that Mo is definitely gone, and I think there's a very good chance that Snacks could be as well. Those two alone could save the Jets around $16-$20 million in cap space next season. That could enable them to sign Fitz, and at least a couple, if not several of their own FAs, and maybe even an outside cheaper FA or two. I think that's also why he arranged Marshall's, Cro's, and the other FA contracts from last season the way he did. He knew he was going to need cap space this season, and if some of those players didn't work out, he could let them walk with no cap ramifications and replace them with cheaper players. When I saw all the FAs the Jets were going to have this year, I initially thought that perhaps Mac had not noticed or had perhaps made a mistake, but he's too sharp for that. I think it was intentional. At LB, I think Taiwan Jones will stick on the active roster and Erin Henderson will be re-signed. I think Demario Davis is a goner. Mac will probably sign a cheap, younger FA to add to the competitive mix at ILB. I think Pace will be gone. I Mac will go with Mauldin, Catapano, Reilly, the 3 reserve/futures LBs (Howsare, Deion Barnes and Julian Stanford, and will look to draft an OLB. He may sign a cheaper vet FA as well for competition.
Tagging and trading mo is our best option and I would look at a team like the Bears who just switched to the 3-4 and are in need of an impact defensive player. They hold the 11th pick in the draft. I would ask for that pick and a 3rd rounder as well.
How are we going to get a good return on Mo? He just had surgery. And teams know if they wait a year they can get him when he reaches FA.... If it's a tag and trade, we'd have to find someone desperate. Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Absolutely not.... The guy is top 3 at his position, is young and is a huge difference maker. There is no guarantee that he will even hit free agency the year after or that a team will be able to attain him that way anyway. Mo is a hot commodity and we should get a nice return if we put him on the market. Also he broke his leg he should be fine in a month or two the injury will not affect his stock.
And you don't see a team trying to lowball us cause he's hurt? That's the first thing I'd expect somebody to do. Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
They can try and lowball us but there will be another team ready to jump up and take advantage. Teams will be serious about getting him he will be a hot commodity.[/QUOTE]
Bowles also said he wants to get faster on D. Irvin is definitely fast. Tampa Hali sounds like a great fit and is the type of veteran signing that could put this Def over the top.
I don't really think Pacman is still the scumbag that everyone perceives him at. The interview on Inside the NFL he did with Marshall was eye opening. Two personal fouls in 5 seasons with Cincinnati, and the fact that he got flagged on that final play was horse shit. He'd be a solid pickup for this team despite what happened.
This is where I really wish MacCagnan used some of that jack to lock up talent he already had. I would swap Cro for locking up Wilkerson long term. I can understand not wanting to lock up talent that he was not familiar with (Ivory, Powell, Snacks, etc) but leaving Wilkerson out to dry while burning through $100M may be Macc's undoing.
