Well earned his firing, can't think of one area of special teams we excelled at except Purdum's snapping....Westhoff liked Quigley as our punter over Weatherford
I wonder if other sports markets drag out old team figureheads as much as the Jets media does. Hopefully we'll soon get Namath's comments on Westhoff's comments followed by Pennington's comments on Namath's comments before someone pings Rex about it.
Fuck Westhoff. He's a jackass. Always has been. I never liked him. It's a well-known fact that Westhoff doesn't know jack shit about kicking. I remember reading an article interviewing one of his kickers with the Jets who went to coaches on another team(s) for help and to learn how to kick better/correct flaws. Westhoff had nothing for him. How is it being "cowardly" to fire a coach whose units were abysmal? That makes zero sense. Were the Dolphins "cowards" when they fired him (Westhoff)? In addition, April was a 2nd or 3rd choice (or lower) when he was hired. Bowles has a chance to hire a personal friend whom he wanted to hire last season, but the Falcons wouldn't allow it. This probably would have happened even if the Jets STs performed very well this season.
I think what Weshoff is getting to, which gets ignored on this site a lot, is the Jets personnel on special teams are horrible. Everyone is so quick also to fire a coach but if you don't have good enough players, what the heck do you want the guy to do? The Punter stinks. What is he supposed to do, go kick for the guy? The FG kicker got hurt and the replacement didn't do a bad job, but once again, he can't go out there and kick for the guy. Kerley has no acceleration. Once again, what is he supposed to go out their and run for the guy?
Interesting comment about Revis I thought. There's no doubt they were soft on Watkins, passive, scared. He killed them He had a talk with Woody the other day, and then came out firing? He admitted on SNY last off season he wanted to be a HC and was pissed that he was never considered. Also said he wouldn't ever come back as a ST coach. Doesn't mean he wouldn't have changed his mind He get's pissed sometimes and it spills over I think. Cowards? Lol Bowles might have a guy lined up that he'd prefer. Oh well
As good as McCagnan's offseason was, not matching the 49ers 2 year 1.7 mil offer to Nick Bellore was a mistake, and I knew at the time that the special teams would take a hit.
Big cat your post speaks volumes for MM when all we could come up with is that he messed up by not matching an offer to a ST player
I'm in the minority but I think Devin Smith is a total bust... that said big picture I still give MM huge props !
ST this year was worse than I have ever seen on this team. Even when they had the invisible man as punt returner a few years back it was still miles better than it was this year. The firing was justified.
Absolutely! I was scratching my head thinking, "why the fuck is Revis not jamming the ever living shit out of Sammy at the LOS?".
I usually think that Westoff has some good things to say. He's right that April was given a minimal amount of talent and some bad specialists... But they were absolutely f-cking terrible beyond the minimal expectations. Any coach would lose his job with that performance. Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
The 2 words I'd use to describe April's firing... ABOUT TIME He should have got axed after the Eagles game. We might have turned ST around.
