To be fair ... in 2014 Kerley did make the two best catches of the season. Unfortunately neither of them counted
Special Teams: F- Defense: B+ Offense: A Head Coach: B+ GM: A Special Teams was horrid beyond words. Defensively, the Jets did a solid job coaching but I think Marcus Williams was severely under-used. Offensively, we had the best offensive season we've had in a looooooooong time. How often is the Jets' offense this good? It wasn't perfect or even close to perfect, but we have to give Chan Gailey major probs for his accomplishment. The offense now looks like an actual strength of this team. Bowles did a solid job for a rookie HC. He handled the media, IK-gate, and Richardson's suspension very well. He seemed to learn as the season went along, which is a good sign. Mac Dawg did a good job in his first year, but the real challenge is this offseason, when he'll have to make a lot of very difficult choices about which of our free agents to keep, as well as dealing with another draft.
Not sure how the GM keeps getting treated in a coaching ratings thread, but Macc was B at best. At best. Maybe a B-. The STs part of the roster was complete dogshit and you fill that part with inexpensive players. Add in the Cromartie contract and giving him an A is fucking laughable.
Mac gets a straight up A. Formed a great coaching staff and flipped a shitty team to 10-6 ... if Petty pans out... he's amazing. not to mention he pulled in marshal and fitz with a 5th and 6th round draft pick.. arguably our 2 most valuable players
Depends on what those 9 losses look like. If the team looks clueless, the seat gets warmer. If the team is in the games, the schedule has to be taken into account. I'm sure some would simply say that a loss is a loss, but I believe that there are several levels of losses. Really bad losses where the team just looks outclassed. Bad losses where the team can't make plays. Losses where the other team just outplays us because of the talent gap.
He didn't even hire Bowles, and all of the coaches under him were Bowles hires. Only a homer would give him an A.
people don't give Bowles enough credit for his staff. I've seen people make comments that Gailey is good- bowles is bad... how the hell do you think Gailey got here? For a rookie HC like Bowles to put together the staff that he did is really impressive. And some of the hires were ballsy too
ok fine...coaching staff aside since that was Casserly ... the talent on the team had nothing to do with Mac? Marshall Fitz Leonard Williams James Carpernter Mauldin, petty, gilchrist.. skrine... all big contributors.. don't see how only a homer would give him an A when he's clearly an Exec of the year candidate. Doesn't matter if you're a great coach or not if the talent isn't there. See Payton, Coughlin, Harbaugh (both) or any other team that failed miserably this year
ST is supposed to be filled almost entirely with cheap players on rookie contracts. The guys who are trying to become starters on offense or defense in a couple of years. The problem is that Idzik did a shitty job drafting and we had to prioritize offense and defense since all three units were bad. It's just not realistic to upgrade all three areas from shit to good in one year. Doing 2 out of 3 = an A, especially when you get Leonard Williams at #6, a top-3 receiver in the league for a 5th, a top-13 or so QB (in our offense at least - overall he's still a journeyman, but in our offense Fitz can put up solid numbers and play at that level) for a 6th, and get Revis back. That, to me, is an A. Mac got burned on the Cromartie contract, sure. He was overpaid by $4m or so. But it's a contract we can get out of completely because there are no guarantees. If we were stuck paying Cro $8m in 2016 it'd be different. Cro had a huge resurgence with Bowles in 2014, playing at a Pro Bowl level - so it was reasonable to think his bad play in 2013 was due to injuries and/or Rex's coaching. It was probably the only major move Mac made that didn't hit the mark, and even then it wasn't an utter disaster.
Bowles hired his coaches after he was hired. And he gets to fire them too. Who cares about that award for Mac? Let's see what he does this year. He did a good job tho. He took the money that was left over from Idzik and we got competitive. Don't think it warrants exec of the year tho. Our roster wasn't deep enough. That was apparent to some people This. We just weren't deep enough. This is a tough game without that elite QB. Lotta things gotta come together at just the right time....
IK gets the credit for Fitzpatrick's emergence... guess we gotta give Idzik credit for MM emergence eh
Whatever grade I was going to give the coaches was changed last week,,,no excuse for the way they came out and played ! The play calling be it on offense or defense was horrendous,,,special teams sucked all year no one gets a pass on that including the GM! 10 guys on the field and wasting T.O s,,,,jumping offsides on 4 th and 3,,,,sorry guys this still all does not sit well with me ! Why does it always seem that no matter who our coach is no matter what year the guy is " learning on the job " or " it's only his first year " screw that these guys and us have been watching and playing and coaching all their lives and what we saw last week sucked ass and in my book does not get a free pass ! Good coaches get their teams in the best position to succeed and I saw none of that last week !
Good job. To the comments about the defense, I'd add that Rodgers lost his depth at S before the season even began, and his LBs were all mostly old and glacially slow and incapable in coverage. Bowles and he managed to hide that weakness much of the time, or at least overcome it. Because of that, I'd give him a higher grade, say a B+. I'd also give Bowles an A- or at least a B+. I think he handled the adversity well, stayed even keel and kept the team focused. For me his handling of the team after the Houston loss and the way he quickly analyzed what was wrong with the offense, was nothing short of brilliant. He was usually great at making in game adjustments, he learned as the season went on, and generally had good game plans. I'm sure there are some things he can improve upon and still learn, but I think we are VERY blessed to have him as HC. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, if Mac is anywhere near as good with personnel as I think he is and can find us a quality starting-caliber QB and manage the cap well, I think the Jets will win at least one if not several SBs while Bowles is our HC.
Hell NO! If he was, that would be it for me as a Jets fan because I would know that things are hopeless as long as Woody owns the team.
Who deserves it more? The roster wasn't deep enough? Are you serious? Tanny and Idzik left the cover bare. Mac only had 7 draft picks and money to sign FAs. He did an amazing job in one offseason. It is totally unrealistic to think that he could have fixed both the offensive and defensive starting units AND the depth in one off season. You admitted that in your response to Jets Esq., so how can you then criticize Mac for not having enough depth? That makes no sense.
Bowles calls the shots on defense, similar to Rex and Thurman last year so all credit or at the very least most of it really goes to Bowles.
Very, very serious. I said he did a good job. And I don't care about any award. I think he did a good job and I like him a lot. I'm very happy that Charley Casserley recommended him and Woody hired him. And I'm happy Bowles liked him too when Mac came in to meet him. I've said elsewhere, more than once, that the reason why we couldn't advance any further is because we just weren't deep enough throughout the roster. It showed in ST's and at some Positions. Not counting the QB in the discussion. I've also said elsewhere, more than once, that there wasn't enough time, or resources, for Mac to turn over the whole roster in that time frame, and that's a reason not to be too critical of the job he did with the ST's. That's not saying he did a bad job. It's the reason why we finished where we did. It's not a knock on Mac. It's the truth. Really the job is incomplete tho. For those reasons I believe he won't get the award, and I'll also add that the media won't be inclined to give any awards to us. The statement was directed at someone who declared that he did an A grade job and should get the Exec Of The Year Award, and my reasons were stated. I don't believe he'll get it and don't care who does. Media awards mean nothing imo. If he got it I'd be glad for him, lol I hope that is to your satisfaction, because I wasn't kidding and I really like Mac, and am hoping that he can continue doing a great job for us. But the job has just started really. It's going to be most interesting to see how he handles the current roster, FA, and the draft.
+1000 Couldnt agree more. Call me a madman for feeling this way but the anger/frustration is overwhelming. You get all keyed for the playoff run and the door hits ya in the face...pathetic. Whos to say this above trend wont continue. Thats what worries me waiting for Bowles "improvement " next year. The trust I previously had has gone out the window
