It's Bryce Petty Time!

Let's hope we pick up another QB so we can deep six Geno. I'd rather have Petty picking up garbage minutes next year. In fact, imagine a world where Geno never plays for the Jets again.... it's possible if you believe in it!

 

I believe, but I have this recurring nightmare where Fitz goes down and Geno comes in, plays well enough to make the CS think he might be the guy. Then he tanks next season, meaning they have to throw Petty in before he's ready. And in the meantime they passed on the future HoF QB that fell in the draft, who goes to division rival ensuring another decade of pain. Someone talk me down from the ledge. I mean, its only a dream... that sort of thing never happens to the Jets does it?

 

I have the same dream except the coaches let Geno play out next year because Petty is unproven (kinda like what happened with Simms all over again).

We need to cut Geno loose like we did with Sanchez.

Only then can the healing begin.

 

Virtually every post here contains the assumption that Petty has been progressing to the point where he is, or soon will be, better than Smith and that Smith today is the same guy he was at this time last year.

We don't know about any of this. It's surprising that we hear nothing at all about the progress - or lack of same - of Petty.

Maybe it will never be Bryce Petty time.

 

When it was up in the air whether Fitz or Smith would be available after the Oakland game there were statements about how much he had improved since training camp and that he could play, maybe not with a full playbook, but could play if needed.

“I have confidence in Bryce,” Bowles said. “Obviously, he doesn’t know what Ryan knows, doesn’t know what Geno knows, but he knows a good portion of our offense that he can function and go in and play a game.”

That was half way through the season which was much more encouraging than statements from training camp that he had a long way to go.

 

Isn't that called "damning with faint praise?"

 

I don't think you're ever going to hear a word come out of Todd Bowles mouth or the mouths of anybody on his staff that suggest any kind of equivocation about the QB position. I also don't think you're ever going to hear him or his staff talking up a young player before they're absolutely certain they have something going on with the guy.

We're not going to hear broad praise for young guys who haven't got on the field yet. Most coaches operate that way. Rex was different.

Do you remember Herm's vagueness about Chad when Vinny was still the QB, 2 years in? Same thing.

 

Doesn't seem like that at all to me but I guess if someone wanted to claim that they could.

Being the coaching staff was straight up during training camp about where he stood and have been straight forward through the season for everything else as far as I have seen, I don't see any reason they would have changed that for one situation.

 

Would be nice (as a fan) to see Petty get some game experience this year.

What the team does this off season with Geno will be telling as to how they feel about Bryce's progress I would think.

At 6'3" and 230 lbs. he's got the size and the arm. After that it's all about the decisions he makes once the ball is snapped.

I hope the Jets don't fuck up another quarterback by expecting too much too soon.

 

I'd consider it if it was a random team with a crappy defense. I don't want Petty making his first start on the road in Buffalo who has a decent pass rush with the potential for very bad weather. Plus you know Rex will do everything in his power to make it tough for the rookie.

I agree, but if you're talking about his starting, then I also agree with Frenbar that I wouldn't want Petty's first start to be in the snow in Buffalo vs. Rex, and I wouldn't want it to be vs the Pats, either. It's not that I don't think that he couldn't possibly handle that, just that I'd rather take things nice and slow with him, and try to make every time he steps on the field a positive experience. I'd like to build his playing time and confidence slowly rather than just throwing him out there and seeing what happens. If you're talking about letting him come out and play some snaps at the end of a game or when we're up big at the end of the 3rd quarter vs the Pats, letting him play the entire 4th qtr, then yeah I'm on board with that. I can't wait to see him play, but can wait until the conditions are favorable for him to have the greatest success.

I just hate how old of a rookie he is. Brock Osweiler is 25 after 4 years of backing up, Aaron Rodgers was about the same. Petty will already be 25 in May. I think the best thing for the organization would be for Fitz to start the next year or 2 as a bridge and keep developing Bryce, but you don't want your "QB of the future" starting his first game when he's 27.

That's the one evaluation, historically, that works against him. But that doesn't mean that trend can't be bucked. I'm hoping that all the other attributes out weigh it.

I also hope to see Fitz take the helm all of next season, especially if he's healthy and we're in the hunt...... And then go from there
