It's a cool theory, but also a lame theory. I like that it makes everything go full circle, but I also don't. Would it make the rest of the events less important? Hard to say. Maybe not. Also, this is going on in the Marvel universe with Thanos behind the scenes so much. Not sure you want the same with Star Wars. It could work though. The wait til May 2017 has begun...........

There's only been seven movies. The overall consensus is its better than the prequels but below the original trilogy; that puts it square in the middle not towards the top.

Its def better than the original. Im not a fan of ROTJ like others. Fucking ewoks. Empire is still probably the best. This film is second only to that and probably tied with the original. ROTS isnt bad.

That being said, i think it depends mostly on what you like about star wars. Some people like the space battles others like the jedi. Me, im a jedi guy, so anything that delves into that i prefer.

No freakin way. It isn't better than any of the original trilogy. How can it be when it blatantly takes plot points from the original? You have to remember when New Hope came out there was nothing like it before. It was ground breaking and changed movies forever. It may look dated now but to say that this Awakens is better than the original Star Wars is insane. There's not one feeling of tension in this entire movie. It started out great but started to go down hill as soon as Han Solo appeared. Harrison Ford phoned in performance. If you were looking forward to seeing any of the original characters you will be disappointed by this.

Not one feeling of tension in this movie?

Man what are you talking about...Harrison didn't phone in shit he was great. You sound like you miss the unique prequels and their long intense debate filled Republic and Senate quarrels

The plot is almost identical to the original star wars: cute little robot(BB8/R2-D2) has plans/maps that the empire wants and the rebels need. robot ends up with kid(Rey/Luke) that was left on desert planet. Robot and kid meet old man(ben kenobi/han solo) who takes them to cantina to secure safe passage to rebels. Empire blows up alderan/planets using new weapon(deathstar/starkiller). Heroes end up on said weapon base. Shields need to be taken down. Old man(ben Kenobi/han solo) is struck down by light saber of main villain(darthvader/kylo ren). main hero(rey/luke) learns to use the force. rebels attack (deathstar/starkiller) and blow it up. rebels win this round but the war continues on. Good movie but the plot is about 38 years old.

My opinion is better than your opinion!

I hate these conversations. You didn't like it. Other people did. The only difference is that one group of comments is celebratory while the other tries to bring people down.

    Merry Xmas!

At the time it absolutely was, but it doesnt change the fact that its story telling was well inconsistent. So if you tell me this movie is the same as a new hope, then how can a new hope be better if the plot os the same, with better visuals? Now look im not saying a new hope is bad, but this movie is clearly better in terms of continuity and introduction. There were certainly characters that coulda have used more explaining, but for all the expectations, this movie met it head on.

not it isn't better than the introduction or any story telling of the original Star Wars, and continuity is only relevant when discussing subsequent films, not the original Star Wars, because the continuity is only relevant when addressing consistency with previous films. There is no previous film from the original Star Wars to be cosistent with -- it is the first movie and the story that the subsequent films have been forced to be consistent with. ESB and ROTJ are extremely consistent with it, the prequels are terrible in their continuity. And Despite Cappy's dumbass attempt to criticize the dispute of opinions, there are widely accepted elements of storytelling that are used to objectively critique movies so we aren't simply arguing "my opinion is better than yours," and this movie fails on all levels of objective story telling criticism.

Comparing it to the original Star Wars is the most simple and straightforward comparison, but these complaints can be identified compared to any well done movie.

What's the most basic thing you need in a good story? A protagonist who is actively pursuing a defined goal. That's what we are rooting for -- Luke discovering his Jedi abilities, and that is the goal in just the first movie, in addition to his defined desire to rescue Princess Leia, join the rebels and then lead an attack against the Death Star, all of which are simply concluding plot elements established in the first 30 minutes of the movie -- the story set up.

In The Force Awakens Rey is the main character, but she isn't after anything specific, she is just wondering through the events around her. First she is just trying to survive as a scavenger, then just survive when Jakku is attacked, then escape when the Millenium Falcon is taken over by the guys after Han Solo, then run away from the light sabre, then is captured, and then discovers she has the force and can save the day. But she isn't pursuing anything, and because she isn't pursuing anything the movie has no plot. it's just a bunch of random action scenes thrown together to get the characters to different places. Rey isn't on a journey until the last 5 minutes of the movie. That's horrible story telling. There is no way you can argue objectively that is better introduction or story telling than the Star Wars -- the very story and character introductions that created the most popular story in film history.

Plot? as I mentioned, there is none. The search for Luke Skywalker? Nobody is actually looking for Luke Skywalker in the movie. They talk about it, but they don't do anything about it, as in actively pursing it. Movies are about actions not dialogue. Talking about Luke Skywalker being a myth and missing and Ren wanting the droid to locate him is not the same thing as the characters, plot points and exposition being about actively pursuing him. This movie has no plot because they aren't in pursuit of anything specific throughout it. it's just a bunch of chase and battle scenes of the characters escaping random attacks, none of which push a defined plot forward.

Compare that to Star Wars when Obi-Wan discovers the hidden message in a droid, takes Luke on a journey to return the plans to Alderan, which leads to their capture, the rescue of Princess Leia, and the return of the Death Star plans to the rebel alliance -- which is Leia's very goal in sending them to Obi-Wan in the first two minutes of the movie. They set up a specific story and all actions are directed towards that story. All of that built around a characters defined journey -- frustrated farm boy to galactic hero.

As I have said previously, this movie doesn't introduce anything, it hints at what will come later. The interest isn't in what we know but what we hope to find out later, and that interest in finding out later is 100% dependent on the audiences existing interest in the Star Wars story, not anything done in this movie, since there is no defined journey or plot to create interest in this movie itself.

Subjectively, you are obviously entitled to be entertained, and despite Cappy's dumbass arguments in this thread, nobody is arguing you are wrong for having been entertained and enjoyed it. But objectively, this movie fails on all accounts of basic story telling.

I know youre not a big fan of the movie, you've made that clear and you are certainly entitled to feel that way.

The plot isnt the search for luke. Its getting the information that leads to him. No theyre not the same. Theyre not actively looking for him because thats not the point of the movie. They just want intel. Getting and keeping that intel requires a series of hijinks and battles that further put the goal in or out of reach.

Its an introductory movie that sets a stage for a larger adventure. I compare it to the original not because of the Individual story elements themselves but that is essentially what ANH did. It set the stage for a larger movie.

Just like a play has many acts, this is kinda the route theyve taken with the franchise. It was entertaining and the story telling was fine save for a few things that def agree could be expanded on. It was a good movie, but you entitled to feel otherwise

I think the disconnect here is whether or not a group of random events that lead to a very late plot point can constitute a plot.

Thanks to Tarentino, a lot of people are convinced that it can. But with a movie that has this type of hype and history, you would expect some very basic scripting that just didn't happen.

But, hey, JJ Abrams was able to scribble another tentacle monster into one of his movies.

Saw the movie and really enjoyed it with the family. Either Rey is related to Skywalker or Obi-Wan ... I hope it's Obi-Wan to be honest.

This isn't to debate you, just the enjoyment of discussing the topic, so please take it as such.

Wife went out with friends so I decided to watch the original Star Wars with the kids, and that is still an incredible movie. It moves briskly from one relevant plot point to the next, the characters are fully fleshed out and their journeys defined, and the writing and directing are incredibly strong -- it's a movie chocked full of iconic film moments. There is no way TFA is in the same ball park as it.

But more surprisingly, how did the guy who wrote and directed this movie write and direct the prequels. Star Wars is the very opposite of any of those movies. How did he get everything so right in that movie and then decide that despite its success that the the prequels should be completely different movies in character, exposition and tone. For the most part I actually like the broad political plot of the prequels.

I actually think you like how the original movie was very personal. And by that I mean more like characters and their lives in the complex relationships that didn't get really explored this movie.

I actually agree with you on that level. This movie wasnt as personal as that level. Not trying to debate your views by the way.

Loved the movie. I put it 2nd only to Empire Strikes Back. My favorite part was when the light saber flew past Kylo Ren into Rey's hand. That sealed the question of who she truly is: Luke's daughter.

I have to agree, my biggest gripe with TFA was the fact that they focused so heavily on setting up the future of the new trilogy that they neglected to fully flesh out the ideas in this movie. Also it was over directed and the characters we're entirely one-dimensional outside of Kylo Ren, but that's a different discussion.
That said it did have its moments despite being kind of a snoozer (until the last 30 min or so) packed with fan service to keep the audience reminded they were watching Star Wars. I think in time this one will serve as a solid reboot and be better in a bingewatch/ as a part of a whole story-- its ultimately too incomplete to stand strongly on its own IMO.

Star Wars is about the Skywalker family, but the #1 Skywalker of them all is Anakin. I wonder if he will make an appearance in Episode VIII? Possibly talking to Luke? Or Rey? I felt it would make sense for him to be in The Force Awakens but there never really was a spot for him.
