Nobody is bitching about the basic structure of the journey which is what the hero's journey is, they are complaining about the specific story elements being reused -- desert planet, secret hidden in a droid, Death Star rip off, none of which has anything to do with the broad concepts outlined in the hero's journey. As you said, all stories follow that idea but they don't replicate the exact same story and plot points.
I never watched any Star Wars movies. My kids however watched a lot. This Saturday I am tasked with taking them to this movie. Will I understand anything if I haven't watched any Starwars stuff before?
Yeah it does a good job of bringing you in without making you feel like you need to watch the other movies. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Probably 2 different mindsets. Maybe you did see a different movie though. You might have accidentally walked into Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.
consider yourself lucky Brook. You won't have any preconceived ideas about what this movie should be. Take the kids and enjoy man!
I'm of the opposite opinion. This movie offers so little that is interesting that I have a hard time believing someone without an emotional attachment to the previous stories would find this a compelling story by itself. Since so little is given about these characters and who they to make you interested in them for what we know of them there is nothing to create interest about their journey other than the curiosity of what we don't know, and the only reason to be curious is if you already care about the overall story from the other movies and want to know how this new film is continuing it. Otherwise it's just another movie of poorly developed characters and weak storytelling, and most people don't walk out of those kinds of movie wondering about where that is going in any subsequent movie.
I just don't think people these days look for that kind of depth anymore in movies JB. They want to be entertained and feel good when the movie is over. Simplistic I agree but its the world we live in today. The movie has already cleared $200 million so some folks do like this movie. We won't even get into swag sales and merchandising. It may not be the second coming of Casablanca, but it is a cash cow for its investors and good simple entertainment for today's audience.
But that is because the brand is strong and people who already have an interest in the existing story are going to see it, and in many cases several times.
That is an interesting question. It would just be a basic adventure movie for someone who has not seen the other films and are not attached to anything. I think it will still be a fun experience. Make sure you let us know your thoughts after.
This, in a nutshell. The only bit of the original trilogy I think they really had to recycle was a member of the Skywalker family in league with the dark side. There are some great nods to the original films in there, and some of this is a positive, but there is just too much. By all means put a secret in a droid and have it end up in the hands of an orphan who just happens to be an untrained super-Jedi (and probable secret member of the Skywalker clan), but then to have the final action set on a super-sized Death star that was vulnerable when its shields went down was just too much for me.
I find that most of the people defending this movie as "awesome" are the ones where you could crap on a pizza and carve it up with a lightsaber and they'd say it was awesome ...the movie was ok...it wasn't great...very derivative and had major flaws ...plus having a whiny emo Vader wannabe bitch as the villain ...no thanks ...I know Kylo Ren was still training and not a full Sith...but to have Rey pick up a lightsaber ..having never seen one before...and beat his ass with it was too much a stretch IMO... The point was shes not just anyone. Its easily one of the top Star wars movies of all time. Kylo isnt just in training, he is conflicted as hell. I like the tormented villian. Its setting things up. I love the direction its going. The brand is def alive and kicking. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Dude she knows how to fight with the staff, knows how to fix shit, and the force awoke in her...She is Luke's blood for sure and well she could fight just like Luke fought and got his ass beat by prime Vader in Empire Strikes Back. emo Kylo is different and actually refreshing...He should have been the Anakin from the prequels instead we got pathetic lines and stoic acting. Adam Driver killed it.
Star Wars: Rogue One - 2016 Star Wars Episode VIII: The Ancient Fear - 2017 (Original title of Ep 7 before they changed it...It gives us the hint that they are talking about Snoke aka Darth Plagueis) JUST WATCH this scene...The Emperor calling him Darth Plaqueis the Wise...You recall Kylo called "Supreme Leader is Wise" to Han Solo in the film. Also with that scene above Now go listen to Snoke's soundtrack music in The Force Awakens BOOM! #PoeAwakens
Ive been spreading that theory myself. Hes seen the empire rise and fall. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Palpatine looks like fucked his face up...He may have gone off somewhere to recover and is behind the resurgence once the Emperor died.
