Fitzpatrick was healthy enough to play and the injury wouldn't affect his play so they stuck with the guy that had been the starter all year. As simple as that. I really don't know how "GeNo" would've done this year, I'm not going to get into a debate based on conjecture.
Wouldn't affect his play? They didn't know that. There's no debate. That train left the station. For whatever reason, the coaching staff decided against GeNo. That was Smokey. Yogi said "picinic baskets".
I started thinking about what his value is on the market and Im not that impressed by his available opportunities on the 31 other rosters he could join as a free agent. There are a few teams in need of a vet at QB, but Fitz might not fit the best in any of those spots. The Texans have Hoyer, the Browns have McCown, the 49er's have (heh) Gabbert, with each one having stopgap/backup worthy performances this past season. Collectively their issue is youth, not a steady veteran presence, I'm not sure any one of them is going to pay Fitz the extra mil or so to do what the aforementioned QB's could for a lower cumulative cap charge. Thus the Jets are Fizpatrick's best bet at being a starter and making the most he possibly could off a career year. He should feel readily obliged to accept a deal based on statistical incentives like yards or TD's, seeing as how he's got a better shot at hitting said incentives with Marshall, Decker and Chan on his side than starting over some other place. Thats great news for the jets who are going to be wary about giving the journeyman too much after ONE solid season. Its looking like a great match for both sides that'll come to a fine arrangement in the end, its just a matter of cap management at this point. Fitz is probably priority #2 behind Muhammad, an instant bring back if nothing can be done on the 96 front.
And you also have to figure the 49ers and Texans will be drafting QBs high so they may sit tight with what they have. Also Manziel seems to have some game so you have to figure they'll stand pat at the QB position. _
yup, they'll be looking for youth, not 30 somethings. meanwhile we have our own youth that I hope we'll be on cloud #9 over. I don't know what the timetable of his development is though, that should influence a new deal for Fitz, or rather how its structured.
Two AMAZING drives by Fitz to win this game again. Guy is a monster. Made a dumb throw and came back stronger than ever. Just what we need
After 11 years in the league, he figured out how to win. I think it's as much the right guy as he's in the right system.
Fitz right now is playing at a level higher than any Jet QB has played in over a decade. I haven't felt this confident in our QB since a small stretch of Favre, maybe a little bit of Penny and Testaverde. Who woulda thunk it that the New York Jets QB was a strength. _
Keeps Fitz for another year or two. Keep developing Petty. Cut Geno (there's no future there) , draft/sign another 3rd string to put some pressure on Petty to keep him honest.
Id give him 2/20, option for that 2nd year... Either way he needs to be back. He's been rock steady out there.
It wasn't till this year. For the record - I used call Fitzpatrick a [backup material] and [Fitz-60-million-dollar-winning-MAGIC]. I am starting to develop a whole new level of respect for the guy now - he's a very cerebral kind of a player with scintillating leadership. His teammates rally around him. [Unlike some other QB that got punched in the face.] If Jets can fix the ST next year, they actually have a very good team. [That starts with firing that fuckface Bobby April.]
