last year I only had one and kept it out all winter. I'll try and do the same this year but the batteries on the wildgame cam already died on me. The moultire one is D or C, don't remember, but the wildgame is double A's and don't seem to last as long.

That buck hasn't been on camera since gun season started. Heard a shit load of shots in the morning opening day. I hope no one got him.
How far out and what were you shooting? You have any cameras up?

still 2 weekends if you're able to get out, then bow/muzzle for 10 days or so after that, right?

have you tried lithium batteries in the wildgame camera? i use them in my wildgames and it ran from may to november taking video the whole time. use them in my moultrie too, good results from the lithium batteries, energizer brand. i will probably pull mine in january, use to leave them all winter but now i like to take them in and clean them out. the moultrie was infested with ants over the summer, nit could use a good cleaning.

might go out this weekend. we'll see, i like the bow season and usually burn out by this time.

I'll give the lithium ion a rip. never been out for turkey although I do buy my license for some stupid reason. I don't like the wild turkey meat.

i usually smoke the breast marinated in teriyaki, comes out pretty good. it definitely stringier than a domestic bird though.
the hunt is great though, a little more laid back than deer, you don't have to worry about scent or wind there's a lot of covering ground. plus you here the toms, so its not a waiting game wondering if anythings coming. you can tell when they are coming or when you have to try to move on them. highly recommend it. and don't think you have to be a great caller. a fired up tom will gobble to just about anything. its more of when to call than how it sounds.

lol ... I was going to go out and try it last year but wasn't motivated to wake up at 430. I did buy what I thought was a turkey call but was actually a crow call. didn't pay attention when I was picking it out since I didn't know one turkey call from another. oops.

anyway I got my money's worth scaring the shit out of my wife with it the next morning. we went to the car to go somewhere and I had left the call in my vehicle. I acted like there was something in the garage and started honking it. she jumped on the fucking hood. lmao

lol, usually sometime in april my wife is yelling at me because i gave the kids my turkey calls and let them have at it for a while.oh the noise.

crow calls are for locating toms, like i said they will gobble to anything and crows seem to set them off in the spring

I was shooting with a 12 gauge. probably like 50-75ish yards, maybe less, downhill, in a little bit of brush but he was clean when I took it. I think I missed high. My right eye is jacked up these days and I can't shoot for shit. I don't have any cameras

that's a pisser man. if it makes you feel any better I've missed from a lot closer with two good eyes.

did you injure your eye or are you just losing vision? open sights?

I injured my eye when I was a kid but it gets progressively worse. It used to be a lot better though. Next year I'm going to get a scope. I'm relatively new/inexperienced to hunting anyway, I grew up more of a fisherman, so I need to upgrade my equipment / processes. I've never had a stand for instance. I'm going to invest in that for next year.

I think I'm setting myself up to fail, maybe, maybe not. I just walk out there every year with my gun that I haven't sighted in in forever and stand there hoping for deer lol. gets me out of the house and some alone time for once. I enjoy being in the woods and watching the sun come up and stuff but its been a long time since I've gotten a deer and this miss stings so I'm going to get more serious next year

What's are you shooting now? I know 12 ga but smooth bore or rifled barrell? What manufacturer?
I shoot a Remington 1100 with a red dot scope on top. Smooth bore and use the Remington sluggers. Its usually pretty good to 50yards. I like the red dot with no magnification. Easier to pick up the target.
Shooting down the gun tends to hit high i feel. Not sure why or if its even true. Just what i have seen myself

Its actually a pretty unique shotgun. Its older, it was my dad's. Its an Italian gun that they imported in the 50s & 60s. Breda is the manufacturer.

I think they still make them over there and they are popular in Italy and Greece but I think they stopped importing them to the U.S., I could be wrong. It is a smooth bore. My old man and my brother both say they love the gun and have been accurate with it so its my fault for missing haha.

I also have the matching 20 ga Breda as well. My dad and my late uncle got them when they were kids.

fwiw I was almost exactly the same prior to this year. I invested a decent amount of time and money into it this year and have really enjoyed hunting more than ever even though there's no meat in the freezer. Kicking myself for waiting as long as I did yo get more serious about it.

I'd recommend getting some trail cams and scouting in the summer. For me the biggest thrill next to actually getting a deer is figuring out where they are and seeing them on camera.

To back up what NSN was saying, the moment you see a deer, whether buck or doe, doing exactly what you thought they were going to do in the spot you picked and scouted all summer is very satisfying and reassuring. Whether you pass, shoot and miss or take them, knowing that you solved the puzzle and put yourself in the right spot is a win. Of course its even better when you fill a tag but still good none the less.

    Anyone do any small game?

Thats sweet. I wish i had my fathers old 4/10. It was made by ithaca arms. It was my mothers fathers, he gave it to my father on their wedding day. Unfortunately the family fell on hard times when i was a teenager and the gun was sold. It was worth 2500 back in the 90s. Can't imagine what it would get now. I used to use for rabbits. Great little brush gun.

sat twice more this weekend without seeing anything, looks like i will have to rely on the kindness of friends if i am getting any venison this year. might have a couple of more chances but the woods just seem dead.

meh - got up at 4:30 to go out with the bow. made coffee and walked the dogs only to realize the wind was whipping. Not sitting in a stand in strong winds late in the season. Looks like more of the same for tomorrow so I guess my season is done too. I haven't been out in 3 weeks and only managed to get out twice w/the gun this year.

Many lessons learned this year. Looking forward to taking advantage of those lessons next year. I'll be doing some "landscaping" to clear some more shooting lanes for the bow from my spot and hopefully increasing my range with more practice over the summer.

I believe PA enforces quality deer management, which is a good program IMO. Stops hunters from taking smaller bucks. I thought the program also meant more doe tags were issued but I'm not sure.

We have too many of them where I am too. I let a few does walk this year that if I needed the meat to live I would have taken. One was a smaller doe opening day of bow season. I regret not taking that one for the meat. One was questionable about whether it was light yet and during the rut so I was hoping a big buck was following behind. No such luck.

It won't be long before they're yarding up in the field behind my house. We have counted as many as 25 out there within 300 yards of the house and as close as 20 yards. I don't think anyone will miss one if it happens to dissappear. ;-)
