If you have the space, you could activate him as the #3. In no way should he be the back-up. Geno has 2 years of starting experience. The Jets are still in the playoff hunt. If, God forbid, Fitzpatrick went down, you 100% go to Geno.

I recall when your 3rd string QB was dressed and on the sidelines but was inactive (he didn't count against that day's roster). He could come in and play, but if he did, then your starting QB was not allowed to return to the game.

    Is it still this way?

Those two years and a nickel will not get you a cup of coffee.

Experience means little if you do nothing with the opportunities that you are given.

While I have not been watching the practices it is not hard to believe that Petty could have overtaken Geno in practice by now.

There is not reason that the coaches have to make a change but if our coaching staff has the better player (in practice) on the inactive list just because Geno has those "two years of experience" they are making a mistake.

Oh our 'D' shit the bed in that one and Geno didn't throw any sixes. It did however show us that he's still the Geno we've had the past 2 years and that the mental/Football IQ issues are sadly still very much in place and he's either a workable backup for some other team or a top tier CFL QB.

If Fitz is unable to take a snap in the last few must win games who'd you trust to get it done?

The guy you just know is going to take that avoidable sack, panic in the pocket and make you long for the days of Sanchez or a promising rookie that I grant you may be worse but equally may be a huge step up i.e Competent?

It's not even close to time for Bryce Petty.

It's not Geno's job to inspire confidence just by going out there. He should inspire confidence by playing well. Geno against the Raiders was 27-42 for 265 yards with 2 TD's 1 into and 2 rushing attempts for 34 yards. He certainly didn't play poorly.

If we have players that get uninspired when we lose our starting QB, I want to know who those guys are, because we probably need to replace them.

Geno is fine as a backup for the rest of this season.

If its not broken, dont fix it.

If Petty plays this year, the season is probably lost.

He can compete to be the backup next season.

Only in week 17 if we have clinched going in to Buffalo. Then we give him a meaningless game to get his first reps out of his way. I do not see that being the case thus this does not happen.

Shit, they had me at "Make you long for the days of Sanchez".
That's like longing for the days you spent hanging out on death row waiting to hear back from the governor's office.....

What if the Jets are already eliminated from the playoffs? Would you give Petty a start in week 17 then?

No way. Everybody knows Geno is a QB god in week 17 every year.

Let's max out his trade value* and spare Petty from the Rex Ryan rookie QB slaughterhouse.

*by this I obviously mean "Try to convince someone he's worth a 7th round pick""

I might. There is no specific need to rest guys if we are done either way, but i would at least give it some thought. More importantly, let's not look at the negative and assume that buffalo will at the very least be a win and in.

Oh, I think we're going to make it, at least I think the Jets will do their part and win all the remaining games save possibly the NE game.

I was just wondering what you'd do in that hypothetical situation. I don't think it would hurt Petty to start that game, but I might start Geno to see if he has improved any at all and offers even a glimmer of hope for next season and beyond, or to try to maybe give him some trade value.

I like your Geno theory. It could say a lot if he plays to one extreme or the other. I think i fear him showing a glimmer us keeping him and then him shitting the bed next year.

I understand that fear. That said, unless he has really pissed off Bowles and the CS with his attitude, I think he's back next year competing for at least the backup spot, and maybe even the starting gig. It all depends on if Mac and Bowles are serious about maintaining that competition from year to year.

If he started and played well in that last game, one might say, "He always plays well in the last games of the season.", and that would be accurate. For me the deciding factor wouldn't be his stats, but if he took needless sacks, when pressured if he panicked and retreated backwards 10 yards, or if stepped up in the pocket/rolled out away from the pressure and delivered a strike downfield. It would definitely be the mental aspects of his play. While it's doubtful that he masters the mental aspects of the game, he does have physical talent, has improved some at least, and has experience. He could still wind up being an asset to the Jets, and even possibly one which they could trade during the early part of next season if a team loses its starting QB for the season or a large chunk of it. I think what the CS and Mac think about Petty and his progress this season could also have a large bearing on what they do with Geno.

No. That's why Petty along with just about every other 3rd stringer is in street clothes every Sunday. No more emergency QB rules. If you dress 2 you can only play those 2.
