Step 1- stockpile draft picks, good job John
Step 2- make good draft picks, bad job John
    Don't be bad job John

We fail miserably at #2 particularly the colossally mismanaged idzick 12 pick draft.
To rebuild you actually have to draft players who see the field and can make the team.

You don't drop half the draftees [7 out of 14, mind you] by the COMING SUMMER if you are so hell-bent on building through the draft.

Idzik was a fucking moron to put it as nicely as any human possibly could.

Sheldon and Pryor good picks. But Idzik had no ability beyond top rounds. I was at the draft during the Saunders pick and celebrating simply bc we drafted a WR. Sad days.

Speaking of Saunders he was just suspended for 10 games for violating the league substance abuse policy again.

Trevor Reilly was a decent pick, I'll give him that one.

They may be bad picks but I'm not making that declaration after 2 years.
The majority of the picks were untradeable, and most of them were on the practice squad and were claimed by other teams. Only 2 were flat out cut Boyd and Saunders.

Come on... Common sense would tell me that he was handcuffed with $. Why do you think we carried cap money? Why would any GM leave money on the books? And do you really believe that everything that happens is "reported"?

I disagree that it's common sense, in fact I think it's the opposite...I think it's common sense that he wasn't handcuffed with $s. It makes no sense that he would have been. Woody hasn't been cheap. Woody may be a lot of bad things, but one thing he hasn't been is cheap. He has paid out a LOT of money for players. He shelled out big bucks for stadium. He wants to sell PSLs and tickets. He wants to win.

Idzik TRIED to spend the money, just failed because he was cheap and had no idea what he was doing. That's why the money was left on the books. He wasn't qualified to be a GM. He was an administrator for most of his career. Personnel was not his thing. Why would he have been handcuffed with the $s? We carried the cap money because Idzik refused to "overpay" and probably because players and their agents could tell from dealing with him that he didn't have a clue what he was doing, so they didn't want to sign there, plus they probably realized the team was going nowhere with Rex as HC. Perhaps you need to go back and read the papers and see how many players Idzik tried to sign and failed. If Woody had told him he couldn't spend $s, he wouldn't have been out there trying to sign them.

wrong in rebuilding mode you musty hit on your draft picks at a higher rate. That is what got Idzick fired. I mean he hit on 4 picks out of 20+ Milner injuried, mcdougle ? , I can do this all day because he was horrid evaluating talent for the draft.. You need to hit on picks if you don't spend money and he did not.

I don't think you could possibly be more wrong. Woody didn't cave in to pressure from the fans and media. That's absurd. Obviously, he was already talking to Wolf and Casserly and others in league circles and realized he had made a mistake both in hiring Idzik and the way he hired him (telling him that he couldn't fire Rex).

When Mac was hired, it didn't mean that they were suddenly in "win now mode" and the rebuilding phase was scrapped. That's just ridiculous. To begin with, Rom Wolf, is one of the best GMs of the last 20-30 years. He was advising Woody. He surely wouldn't have told Woody that the Jets had the talent to go all in in 2015 and go into "win now" mode. The Jets had little or no depth, had holes all over the roster, needed a dramatic culture change, and had a rookie HC coming in with a first-time DC and CS working together. They had huge question marks at QB, OL, WR, the secondary, TE and RB. To even begin to rationally claim that the Jets were in "win now" mode is laughable imo. It makes zero sense. No one in their right mind that knew one whit about football would come to that conclusion. This nonsense needs to stop.

Not every draft pick is going to light the world on fire in one or two years. That's why patience is key in rebuilding.

Firstly I'm not "wrong" we have a difference in opinion. Secondly it is well documented that the Jets were in a rebuild once Idzik came on board. Had there not have been the media and fan scrutiny Idzik would still be here right now. Woody was on board with the idea of a rebuild, then after the disastrous 4-12 season, they put an emphasis on signing vets in an attempt to win now and placate the fans and media. You don't spend that much money on vets if you weren't in win now mode. When you're rebuilding you focus on developing young talent with the understanding that you have to endure a few losing seasons while your young talent develops and learn how to win. So Idzik's moves were mainly with that in mind.

You're definitely wrong. Something that actually happens is not a matter of opinion and treating it as such to fuel your own delusion is a personal problem, it appears.

I don't mind Idzik using all 12 draft picks then cutting the bad ones. What was he going to do? Package his 6th and 7th rounders for another 1st? Get real.

There ARE diamonds in the rough to be had in the late rounds, but the chances are very slim. Having numerous late round picks quadruples his chances of hitting on someone great. But if not, adios. Most 6th and 7th rounders get cut anyway.

There's no science to finding the next Tom Brady in the 6th round. It's a numbers game. The more you can throw at the wall, the greater your chances of hitting. Can't blame him for trying.

It's his early picks that pisses me off, not the slew of late rounders.

We're still in the middle of a rebuild. I'm sorry that you can't see it. Just because they added some vets to make the team more competitive while they're rebuilding/reshaping the roster with young talent, doesn't mean they're in a "win now" mode. I'm sorry, but your opinion is definitely wrong. Common sense, knowledge of the game, logic/reason, the facts, Mac's own words that the team was going to be built through the draft but in the meantime they were going to try to be as competitive as possible, and Mac's actions in the draft all prove that your opinion is flat out wrong. Not everything is a matter of opinion. There are facts that clearly demonstrate the truth.

If the Jets were in a "win now" mode, there's no way they would have stayed put and taken Leonard Williams. The DL was the strength of the team. They needed help on the OL, RB, TE, WR, and OLB. Similarly, there's no way he would have traded up for a QB in the 4th round, if the Jets were in a "win now" mode.

Finally, let me ask you this...Would anyone in their right mind think they were going to win much of anything with Geno at QB? Until Ik broke his jaw, he was the starter. If they were going all in in a "win now" mode with Geno as the starting QB, they're all certifiably insane and there's no hope for this franchise.

I guess the Patriots aren't in "win now mode" either since they drafted a QB in the second round a couple years ago. Guess the Bengals aren't either since they drafted a QB that year too. The Packers definitely are not in "win now mode", they drafted a QB right after we did.

Macc took the best player available (in his opinion) at each of his picks. They wanted to draft another QB as a developmental project so they traded up and took Petty. None of that doesn't mean the team isn't trying to win now. Once you go out and commit big money to vets, then you're no longer rebuilding. A rebuild is what the Jaguars are doing, they've mostly built their team through the draft and they've not went out and spent huge money on vets. What Macc did was more of a retooling than a rebuild.

As far as the QB situation goes what other choice did they have? They needed to win coming off that 4-12 season to change the feeling around the team. There wasn't a good QB available to truly upgrade the position, so they handled it the best way possible. They traded for a veteran in Fitzpatrick to serve as a backup and insurance policy in case Geno stumbled. They figured in the meantime that with experience and an oc who's gotten the most out of mediocre/average QBs and with added weapons that he'd take a step up, but if not they can turn to Fitzpatrick. Geno got hurt and Fitzpatrick became the starter and he's played above his norm this year.

The 2015 draft was eh with Richardson being a big splash the rest was bad. I'm guessing we should have gone Fluker, Warmack or traded back with the Milliner pick. We had nothing on that line other than Mangold and Brick and Gio, who we now understand is hot garbage. The Richardson pick was a good one but we REALLY didn't need another d lineman. Especially since we already had one playing OLB from the year before.

The Geno Smith pick was meh. Still, he might have had a shot if he went someplace with a more professional atmosphere rather than one run by a guy suffering from Peter Pan syndrome. The rest of the picks while attempting to address team needs were awful. Funny thing is that they are all still on the roster providing below average NFL play. Bad draft, but at least it can be said that they are still on the roster.

The 2014 draft on the other hand can only be classified as a 100% cluster****. They should have 100% moved some picks to get into the top of the 2nd or the end of the first to get Bridgewater or Carr. After the first the whole draft broke down with every single pick becoming a head scratcher. Nobody, anywhere, understood what was going on with the draft picks, not fans, not the professionals, not the analysts, nobody. They didn't have the roster space to sign them all, then picked multiple players at positions where they weren't really going to get a chance to compete or didn't fit.

I know in terms of value and just plain idiocy the McDougal pick is probably the worst from this draft, but the Jerimiah George picked pissed me off more than the others. It was a late 5th and I don't know who I wanted us to take at that point. What I do remember is the talking heads discussing up his slow foot speed and inability to play coverage. The Jets needed a OLB in the worst way that had the foot speed to rush the edge and cover. They passed up opportunities to utilize the premium picks to upgrade the position in that direction.

Maybe they forgot, or for some ungodly reason felt that a pass rushing OLB wasn't a position of need with old ass Calvin Pace on one side and a converted hand in the dirt DE on the other. Finally, somebody must have said "hey guys, we need to get a LB". Resulting in one being picked at absolute random based on criteria that didn't come close to being what the team actually needed.

Honestly, it's probably a little bit of both. This team was left with such a complete lack of depth of talent on this roster it was nuts. The organization was a joke and we were routinely used as pawns to get players better contracts with other teams. I know it's a popular myth to say that Rex attracts free agents, but who did we sign away from somebody else during his time here? If anything we had to overpay our own players to stay.

Anyway the FA spending this year was done because they had to do to league cap rules, our complete lack of depth and the fact that the organization needed to quickly bring back the legitimacy it shed during Ryan's tenure. Additionally it was a move to try and get something out of the pieces in place before they either became too old or too expensive for a rebuild. (Mangold, Brick, Harris, Decker, Mo, Sheldon, Harrison, etc).

The first goal of making the Jets a legitimate NFL organization didn't take years, it's taken months which is astounding. Everything from the talent level to organizational culture was completely 180'd by these guys so fast if you blink you might have missed it. When you have visible talent out there like Marshall, Decker and now Fitz talking about how much they love it here. I feel like they are absolutely getting the most out of our older players and the FA signings. We need to be able to resign Wilk and I'm hoping that this new breath of fresh air from our player helps make that happen. All of this in turn should make NJ a desirable destination for FA's and make it easier to keep players.I assumed it would take 2-3 seasons to see tangible results, but somehow it's happening right now.
