Well...according to jxc's link above, it's never too late.

Nothing is going to fix this ST unit this year, it's too late for that. You actually need good special teams players for that to happen and a good coordinator. We don't have either. You can improve a bit I guess, that's what happened when we put Cro out there, but that's just one piece. And now April wants to bench some of the guys that he thought were our best special teamers and he thinks this is going to fix this mess? By playing guys that he thought weren't good enough in the first place? I have almost zero expectations at this point. As long as we don't turn the ball over on special teams, as long as we don't get scored on I'm fine. I don't need any bigplays from Kerley or Cromartie, no touchdowns, nothing. Just don't turn the ball over and don't get scored on. And then get rid of April in the offseason and bring some decent special teams players in and a decent return man.

you can give our coverage teams a boost by adding some defensive starters to it. it's not an ideal solution but it would help. I hope that's the change the article hints at.

we cannot continue to give up special teams touch downs if we want to make the playoffs.

April should be gone asap. Quigley should also take the plunge.

I don't think that Westy wants, or needs to put up with coaching anymore. That being said, there must be somebody out there.

When Westcoff was with Miami and his early time with the Jets, he would demand (and get) any player on the roster he wanted to play STs. And he wasn't shy about asking for top starters if he felt they could help make his units even better. Westie was the best STs coach in the NFL for years, and that was part of his agreement when coming to NY. He also had a minor hand in the draft, especially the later rounds where he looked for speed demons that loved to hit.

Westcoff quit coaching in large part due to the NFL cutting the balls off Special Teams. Teams no longer draft for that side of the ball. They'd rather draft 3 QBs and then see what they have laying around during training camp to stock STs.

At this point just tell Quigley to kick it out of bounds every time. Punt coverage problem SOLVED

probably not but if he aims his line drives towards the 5 row of the stadium it might make it out of bounds

Yeah, the guys on the SNY postgame (including and especially Westhoff) have said that the real issue is about personnel and there are bunch of guys on ST who shouldn't be on the roster.

I'm not condoning Bobby April, because I think he also deserves some blame, but this speaks to the larger issue about drafting for depth & ST.

The funny thing is that the reason they gave for keeping him in 2013 was his directional punting.

    Put Geno on punt coverage.

He must have some anger issues to work out.

Yes--and additionally on KO, kick the damn ball deep or out of the EZ. This would solve all KR troubles. It's worth getting a guy who can specialize in this given our troubles on ST. I wouldn't begin to guess who to cut and its not going to happen anyway. That one game when Q was kicking off.., can he drill it thru the ez?

It's not like teams have a depth chart on ST--you're not going to play linemen or qb's and your best starters are off limits-. I actually think his statement is bizarre--he needs to figure out schemes that work--his guys are fine IMO.

You're right. Tell him to kick it to the middle of the field. It's sure to go out of bounds.

lineman and your best starters are routinely on special teams. Check out NE sometime, the Gronk broke his arm blocking for an extra point try. And I bet both Marshall AND Decker will be out there at the same time this season, if only for an on-sides kick.

But 'in general' STs is where your back-ups make a living. Unless your back-ups suck, then THEY get benched for some more starters. Or they should. We'll see.

No. I mean listen, has the ST unit had its struggles? Sure. Worst in NFL history? Let's relax folks.
