devin smith is a terrible gunner ... he gets down field quickly but does absolutely nothing when he gets there
This on punts, even if you sacrifice 5 yards on the punt kicking out you don't run the risk of it being run back
4 returns for TD? I thought there were 2 punt return TDs. The kick off coverage is not bad, some missed tackles but still middle of the pack. The punt coverage when combined with the bad punting is what makes it really bad. Makes me wonder where they would be with a better punter, still bad but not 3rd worst in the league.
I agree. When that happens Todd Bowles will say that you can't let someone go because of 1 play or some bs like that. The only thing is that Aprils been bad all year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Westy set the bar pretty high, but it does seem like a change is needed. We have enough talent that our ST should be a lot better than this..
Only ST thing worth noting has been Bullock ably filling in for Folk - keep splitting the uprights Randy. "it's up, it's good"
Funny thing is, he was highly praised as a gunner in college...I'm thinking it maybe April more than just Smith...the whole unit is trash...Jets need more team speed though.
I think it's a personnel problem but that could be the coach because I don't understand the personnel we use. Smith, Bohannon, Powell, and Cumberland. They all miss tackles every week. How many of them have any experience making tackles? At least two of the four should be replaced with backup linebackers. I understand Bowles likes flexibility on the defensive side of the ball but we can only sacrifice so much on special teams. It's really only this unit too. The rest of the special teams has been fine.
I would put some of our best tackling defenders on kick coverage special teams for the rest of the season. Pryor, Revis, Skrine & Richardson are all up on kickoff and punt until the units shape up. I typically hate seeing starters play special teams for obvious reasons but we've been so awful and it's cost us games. We cannot afford to lose anymore games if playoffs are the goal. all hands on deck. I'm sick of watching the likes of jeff Cumberland, devin smith and Bilal powell flop around like retarded fish out of water while attempting to tackle opposing kick returners
24 years and almost all special teams, won Special Teams Coach of the Year twice. Not sure if he maybe has CTE or some other traumatic brain injury and forgot what he was supposed to be doing.
Westie don't wanna coach any more because Teams is no longer an emphasis when drafting. You can blame our current situation on Tanny for trading away our draft pics and Idzik for drafting 200 players then cutting 198 of them. Look, Teams are generally stocked with your 4th and 5th WRs, DBs, TEs, and LBers. All young studs trying to make the team and stick around long enough to become starters. Our 4th and 5th DBs were injured and just getting back on the field. Our 4th and 5th TEs haven't been drafted yet. Our 4th and 5th LBers are now starters playing 30-40 snaps a game (thanks a lot Coples Pace and Demario) And our best Special Teams player is now in Buffalo. Like others have said, your Special Teams is a measure of how well you've drafted in the 4th 5th and 6th round. How we doin?
Changes are a'coming. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...anges-coming-to-struggling-jets-special-teams
Devin has been a great gunner for us all year and he was tremendous in college as well. There's a difference between making a mistake / misjudging a situation and simply being terrible. Devin needs to work on a few things but to say (whoever that was) he's bad or even not good is ridiculous. I think part of this is on Bobby April and the other half is the front office. It's not like April was handed a decent deck of cards. When you go into the season with Owusu and Kerley being your top choices at KR/PR, two guys that struggled with concussions / migraines throughout their career, two guys that aren't exactly weapons either, what do you expect? And when you lose special teams aces like Zach Sudfeld and you replace them with the likes of Cumberland what do you expect to happen? It is what it is, and it's too late now to fix this mess. You can just try to make sure we don't get scored on every week on special teams by getting guys like Cumberland off the field on special teams, and Cro has been somewhat decent as a kick returner as well. So that's probably as good as it's gonna be all year for us.
