In addition to Geno Smith, Stephen Hill and Vlad Ducasse, here are some other real lulus taken in the 2nd round: Mike Nugent, Justin Miller, Victor Hobson, Jon McGraw, Dorian Boose, Rick Terry, Alex Van Dyke, Ryan Yarborough, Coleman Rudolph, and Reggie Rembert.
I didn't go that far back to include Caster. Randy Thomas left the team....so screw him. Ray was Ok, nothing special. Sweeney was a solid player, but not worth a 2nd rd pick. Lamont Jordan, another player that left that was just OK, hit and miss player. My top 5 2nd Rd players were solid players that contributed significantly to the Jets success.

Living in Ohio, I have a lot of friends that are Brown Fans, I know your pain. The Jet were very high, supposedly, on Phil Taylor, glad we didn't go in that direction. As far as 2015, I thought Cam Erving was a reach late Rd 1, a player I never liked. Nate Orchard has potential to be a decent player. Duke Johnson looks OK, he has made some plays out of the backfield.
I look at teams like Cincy and Green Bay, year to year they dominate drafts they know exactly what theyre doing even though recently havent chosen particuly high either. Weve got to stop missing on high picks, almost all of our skill position players and half of our oline isnt homegrown
Give them credit (granted its like 1 thing) for quickly trading Trent Richardson to the Colts & getting a 1st rounder in return!
... which they then traded to Philly to jump up in front of 3 teams with no need at QB to select Manziel (with Bridgewater and Carr still on the board).
Yeah, I neglected to follow up on finding out whatever came of that draft pick. Not good. The trading up thing is real tricky. I agree, -- its good to assess what the teams in front of you need & will most likely choose, but also which of them is eager to trade out. And it could be with your team or someone else (grabbing the player you wanted, but waited too long for).
We traded our first rounder to the Raiders for Doug Jolly and a second rounder with the strategy of using said second rounder to pick a kicker.
Looking at the 2011 thru 2014 drafts for the jets, we see why we really do not have the ability to call the "next man up" when injury or performance beckon....... It appears we have "hit" on 4 players during this time - Wilkerson, Davis, Richardson, and Pryor. I would like to include Amaro but cannot yet. Some folks have different definitions of "hit" but lets keep it at a solid starter and higher, of course. 4 drafts, 4 players...... that's not enough. It forces u to be active in free agency which is a risk in itself, however, the jets have gotten mileage from a few FA signings which has buffered the poor draft performances. The 2015 draft may produce 2 solid starters in Williams and Mauldin. The early returns on smith are what they are and petty is an incomplete obviously. So this looks somewhat better. Couple notes - the S. Hill pick was made in front of these 3 studs - Jeffries, Kendricks (eagles), Wagner (hawks). Ouch....... the 2013 and 2014 drafts after winters (R3) and Amaro (R2) are non-existent. We have minimal depth at best from those years. All this and we are STILL trying to find an answer at QB. Now there are many teams with similar draft history, however, some already have their QB and some have several young picks just starting to impress. So they are in much better shape. Unfortunately for the jets, this isn't the case.

True, but hindsight is one thing on a guy (Saunders) who was projected 6th or 7th round prior to the draft & Idzik takes him in the 4th round and the guy can barely make a roster with anyone.
I think we agree didn't want Saunders at all might have not written that clearly enough lol. It'd be really nice to Bryant right, he's a beast.
Selecting a kicker in 1st round is not a problem. Getting a production worthy of 1st round is. Believe it or not, Al Davis drafted a punter in 1st round at one point - and you know what? That guy happened to be the first punter ever to go to Canton - Ray Guy. Raiders won SB behind Guy's effective punting in SB XVIII. [7 punts out of 9 ended up inside 20.]
