Yes, I saw Sheldon playing OLB, but I hope that won't become a full-time thing, even though he amazed me with his speed and quickness. Since Snacks is pretty useless rushing the QB, I wouldn't care if he goes, although it could mean our D takes a hit in terms of stopping the run. Still, I don't think the Jets can afford to keep Wilkerson, Richardson and Williams and pay them big contracts. With Richardson's flashing at OLB, it's only going to make him want MORE money, as he's showing his flexibility, speed, etc. Some teams will pay him regardless of what his character is like. I don't envy Mac and Bowles their decisions when it comes to the DL, contracts and the cap. I agree with 101GangGreen101's comment earlier about keeping homegrown talent. The Jets have had so few of those types over the years, and I think it is important to keep those types if at all possible. The thing is that Wilkerson, Richardson and Williams ALL fall into that category and there's no way the Jets could or should pay all 3 of them big money. At most, they're only gonna be able to keep 2, and maybe only 1 of them.
I'd absolutely pay Wilk that amount. Its easy to balk at what 2-3 years ago might have been a ludicrous cost, but the fact of it all is that the market has shifted. D-lineman are worth more and we cant just ignore that out of principle. That bubble is not gonna burst soon enough, we're gonna need to pony up quick. Leaving it alone means kicking the problem down the road, not solving a cap conundrum outright.
as far as this talk of big money goes, remember, the salary cap is supposed to increase 10-13 million next year which should obviously alleviate some cap stress
I rather pay wilk than pay Miller. Miller is closer to being suspended for a year than Sheldon is. While our pass rush will surely improve with Miller, I like Wilkerson overall contribution better than I would like miller's.
I dont think we can give Mo that kind of money... especially when we have Williams on a rookie deal, snacks not being expensive and Shelly not making that kind of scratch yet. If wilk leaves, we still have great defensive line. Meanwhile, We need to invest money at LT. We need to either sign bricks replacment or extend brick. we have nothing behind him at LT. And id much rather spend big money on an edge pass rusher then to Mo. Ideally we trade him for a LT/QB/Edge rusher so that big money is invested someone more useful
we cant absorb the loss at LT and also cant afford to ignore QB/Edge rusher. we can live at DE/DT without mo. we arent going anywhere without a LT/QB/Edge rusher
I think we found our edge rusher, though we should look to draft another one for the other side. I am not saying to ignore other positions. The cap is increasing this year and will continue to increase. There's no excuses for not keeping Mo here as a Jet. He's better than Cameron Jordan, and the guy from the Steelers. I again disagree, Snacks is a 2 down player. Leonard Williams while he has been good, isn't on the level of Mo yet and you can argue Mo was better his rookie year. Sheldon is 1 toke away from a year long suspension and could be suspended next year. You and other fans are going by a bunch of what ifs and 2 down players. Mo is the proven commodity and you pay the proven commodity
Yeah i'd agree. I just have a feeling there's a way to stretch their contracts out to have them all here for at least 2-3 more years together. Leo Williams is under a rookie deal for the next 4 years he's not really an issue for now. Who knows.. maybe HE ends up being the one that doesn't stay.
Yeah that's all very logical.. and i agree we will stil have a great D-line.. but Mo is the only one that finishes..the rest of the guys are just a disruptive. QB hits and hurries are meaningful almost as good as a sack but sometimes that loss of yards and potential forced fumble is needed to really stall a drive. That's what Mo brings us. I'm starting to think Sheldon may really start seeing a lot more snap out OLB he covers the flat so well.. he moves so quick for his size it's amazing. Mauldin and Sheldon as edge rushers with Mo and Williams as our DE's? wow. Just saying if we can make this Mo deal work we can fix our front 7 without bringing in anyone just some adjusments
i think Leonard williams replaces mo alot better then Mauldin fixes the edge pass rusher issue... and this is coming from mauldins biggest fan is brick a 2 down player? is QB not an issue? its not like we are talking about a FB here. we have major issue to deal with, ignoring them for the luxury of having 4 great dlineman to me is kind of crazy. i dont keep mo unless we can trade sheldon and find a cheap suitable replacment at left tackle.
I hope that Sheldon won't start seeing a lot more snaps at OLB. That will just wear him down more quickly and perhaps even make him more susceptible to an injury. In addition, I don't care how well he did in limited snaps at OLB, OLB is not his position, nor should it be at 300 pounds. We were all griping about Coples playing OLB at 290. There's no way Sheldon should be playing OLB.
i dont see sheldon as any kind of long term option at OLB. sure mixed in for a few snaps... yea. but when we have to play man and they motion their HB out to the sideline mo aint sticking with sproles ona 9 route or crossing pattern. we need a real solution there. maybe its mauldin. even if it is we have other major issue like LT
If Leonard Williams becomes an all-pro player, we will negotiate, but that won't be for another 4 to 5 seasons. So the Jets will cross that bridge when they get there. Right now, Leonard Williams doesn't even see the field on all 3 downs, he just now gained reps to play on 3rd down. Leonard Williams has not replaced Mo, not even close. I was referring to the d-line. QB of course it's an issue. Stop calling Leonard Williams great, he's not even close to that level yet. Last week he just got his first sack, thinking about Leonard Williams and a contract extension is extremely premature at this moment. I would only trade Mo or Sheldon for a young proven QB, and right now I don't see many of those in the NFL. You need to learn how to be patient. We aren't paying 100M for a QB anytime soon. Nor should we. Also, no one said anything about ignoring other positions. We can pay Mo and still improve the football team.
I love Sheldon, he's a great player. And I don't think it's fair to label him a "bad person" after one incident. But him and Wilk are very similar players and Wilkerson IMO is the safer bet if you come to the conclusion that you can only pay one.
Why is anyone worrying about what Williams might make in 2019 at the earliest, 2020 if they throw the franchise tag on him? Besides the time aspect, can we wait until he maybe has shown he is worth a big contract?
I don't think he has the speed to play a lot more snaps at the position, but I'm not worried about him wearing down. He's a Next Level athlete as far as I'm concerned, and his season started in week 5 with limited snaps.
Because Mac has to think that far ahead. I'm sure he has a team salary structure in mind. I'm sure that he's got other priorities in mind besides the DL. If he re-signs Mo to a huge deal, in all likelihood, it will have cap implications in 2019 and 2020. The same goes for Sheldon Richardson. Their contracts will affect how much, if anything, the Jets are able or willing to give Williams if he has proven his worth. No contract is signed in a vacuum. It affects every other contract on the team and has cap implications going forward. If you can't understand that, then perhaps you need to do some reading about the cap. Why do you care what we decided to discuss anyway? If two of us decide we want to discuss something, that's our business and NOT yours. Quit trying to play censor.
