Nice article. I think some folks are too focused on the article months ago that Petty was not "ready". He wasn't. But he's 10 games into his rookie year, 11 weeks of regular season practice and film review and game planning and learning. It sounds like he's picking stuff up incrementally and in another week or 2 or 3, he's going to have enough of a foundation to play a game. He'll struggle for sure but I think Gailey will design a game plan for his struggles to be minimized. Love how Fitz is helping him out and is invested in his development. If we get knocked out of playoff contention, there would be nothing more exciting for me than to see Petty play some live football. _
There was a quote in the article after the Raiders game where he said "holy shit, I might have to play". Then this time there's a quote that says “With [Fitzpatrick] watching film with me and us getting together on Tuesdays and game-planning together, I can tell you that I would feel confident playing right now". Big leap for 3 weeks and a good sign
I have grown to really like Fitz and hope he is back with the team next year, even if only as a mentor/back-up. If the season continues to spiral downwards I would not be averse to seeing Petty get some playing time, but I would hope the management would be sensible. I'd like to see him get a few plays in and then go back to the sidelines to digest what he's seen. Then a few plays a little later and just keep repeating the process. Let him get his feet wet in a controlled environment. I just don't see any point in throwing him in as a starter even if the season is dead. What would we expect to see? If we expected to see anything other than a raw, overwhelmed rookie, we'd be deluding ourselves.
I was exaggerating a bit, I agree that Claussen is bad. I just want someone else other than Geno or Fitz on this team ready to get under center.

I'm not sure what your point is. If it's that he had a great game against an overrated team, good point. He has a tremendous line that gives him all kinds of time. Against a team that should have lost to BC last week. If you're suggesting we should draft him? And play him next year? _
Before we worry/settle on next year's starting QB, Macc needs to upgrade our O-Line and find a stud RB. We really need these before any QB can have success here. If we're mathematically eliminated with 3 games left, do we see what Geno can do with good WRs, or do we let Petty get his feet wet? In terms of evaluation, Geno already has 3 training camps and 30 games worth of film for Macc to study. There's not much more Macc's gonna learn by watching Geno play 3 more games, with or without good WRs. Petty? I'd go with him. Not to win games, but to give his mind something to chew on over the winter. Having played in real games, under full speed, will add a whole new dimension to film study and to training camp next year.
I think you have to go with Petty at that point. He's the potential future of this team. Geno is an afterthought. I want to see what Petty's got and see if he shows any signs that he could be the next QB. 3 games is a small sample size but it's better than nothing. I've seen enough of Geno to know he's not the answer for the Jets at QB going forward.
If we're eliminated at any point, I'd love to see Petty in there just to give him a taste of the speed of the game. I don't care whether he wins games or not--I just want him to feel real pressure under real game conditions. This upcoming class of QBs is pretty weak and I'd take Petty over any of them by a long shot. It'd be the only exciting thing left to see. _
I think we need to fix OL and develop/draft a QB at the same time. We've got the cap flexibility to do it. I think Mac has the smarts. I would avoid a trade of draft picks for a QB, but the line and QB have to be addressed together.
I think Geno's broken jaw had far more effect this year than just who started. If Smith had won the starting job there is no way he would be mentoring Petty the way Fitz has and quite frankly would anyone want Geno mentoring him? While Fitz is not truly a starting caliber QB he does have the smarts and years in the league to be a good teacher to Petty. Not sure how much I would want Petty to play this year, I was all for 1 game earlier this year but think 3-4 full games might be too much just yet. Some mop up duty if they can ever get enough of a lead but think he would be better served sitting the rest of the year if it is a choice between that and 4 full games. Especially if Mangold is going to be out.
I don't trust those stats of Kevin Hogan. I mentioned Kellen Moore: 1157 completions, 69.8% completion, 14,667 yards, 142 touchdowns in four years. For me, that's it. If that guy can't play in the NFL, then I just ignore college QB stats altogether. And given that we're talking about strawmen, Tee Martin's stats were accumulated in two years since he rode the pine behind Manning his first two. So you now have (amortized): Tee Martin (projected 4 years at Tennessee): 652 competions, 55.4% completion, 9184 yards, 64 touchdowns vs Kevin Hogan (4 years at Stanford) 715 completions, 65.7 completion percentage, 9162 yards. 72 touchdowns Better, but not that different (oddly enough they are almost identical to Luck). Luck projected well, and Hogan might too (although I don't think he projects as well as Luck, actually). But I can't buy the stats.
Okay Nostradamus! I think there are some real serious doubts about it, especially since he hasn't even taken a NFL snap yet. QB's that play 8 seasons as a long term answer for one team are not the norm and/or found everyday. For this year, the short list of QBs that fit that criteria ( Brady, Eli, Ben, Flacco, Rivers, Brees, Matt Ryan, Rodgers) QB's that might/should get there - ( Luck, Wilson, Stafford?, Cam, Cutler?) Any other QB out there including Mariotta, Winston, Bridgewater etc. it is way to early to predict 8 years with one team. But I am glad you are so certain that Petty is going to be for us. If he is this franchise will be in the best position it has ever been in, considering that Namath was the only QB in our history to start more than 8 seasons. (Todd started in 8, but in 2 he wasn't our #1) So I hope so, but seriously doubt it.
It's amazing how all of us think that Petty has been in the film room all year studying. For all we know he's been living it up in that Jersey bachelor bad banging Hooter girls and beer bonging it. Lets hope it's the former.
Well. Now that I think about it that might nor be a negative. Brett Favre did that his rookie year and he ended up okay. But yeah, Petty is probably a straight shooter.
