Completely agree. Tanny and Idzik fucked this team, and most of the playres on the roster are guys they picked. And aside from the other moves you mentioned it is far too early to judge last year's draft. I am as upset as everyone with D Smith, but his problems seem to be in his head. There's a very good chance he can right them. Way too early to call him a bust, even if so far he's been hugely disappointing. Still, I don't expect a big turnaround next year like some here. THere's just too many shitty players and contract situations still left over from the prior regimes. Patience.
Come on, man, Maccagnan sucks, he should be fire like today. He didn't address EVERY SINGLE POSITION previous regimes had fucked up. He didn't clean the mess left behind by Tanny and Idzik in one season, he's so incompetent, worst hire ever.
Not at all. As I already mentioned in that post, after the part you highlighted, you have to look at this year in its proper context. - We have an unbelievably easy schedule this year, the kind that comes around once in a blue moon. How many good teams, i mean really good teams do we face this year? NE twice and that's about it. Every other team on our schedule this year alternates between shitty and mediocre. Colts were supposed to be good, but with Luck's injuries and other stuff, they are absolute shit this year. Cowboys due to Romo's injuries/rust and other issues are absolute shit, although they might get better by the time we face them. Eagles and Giants are mediocre. So are Bills. Dolphins have been terrible. The likes of Browns, Redskins, Texans... 4-6 Raiders? - We spent the most or 2nd most of any team in free agency, spending a ton of money to bring in big name veterans. It's not often that a team can bring in names like Brandon Marshall, Revis, Cromartie in the same off-season. - We've had really high draft picks, 6th overall in every round, the kind of drafting position that lets you bring in blue-chippers with immediate impact. When you combine all of these things, missing the playoffs would make this a terrible year for the GM. You essentially go out, spend all that money, draft that high, and don't actually improve the team in any meaningful way, because 8-8 is even worse than 4-12, you miss the playoffs either way, but get worse draft picks. In 2013, we've had an easy schedule as well (although i think it was harder than this year), and MUCH less talent on the team and we went 8-8. So if we got 8-8 or so this year and miss the playoffs after all Mac did, yeah, to me, thats a terrible year for him as a GM.
We didn't draft for immediate impact, or we wouldn't have taken Williams in the 1st. Our GM clearly has different priorities than you. A high draft position and a lot of money alone isn't going to turn a 4-12 team into a playoff caliber team. I honestly don't really expect us to be a playoff caliber team until 2017 or so - Mac has a LOT of work still to do before I like this roster. I honestly agree with you there. I was hoping the Jets would do this as well. But I can also understand not doing it, especially with Collins not fully cleared even on day 3, (can you even imagine the "Jets Draft accused murderer" media BS?) and am not gonna wring my hands over it.
Please note that by starting this thread, I was not suggesting anything about Maccagnan. I just wanted to get a sense about how everyone here felt.
I give Maccagnan a C+. If, as you say, rebuilding this mess will take a few years, then why did Macc burn our cash on 2015 band-aids? Why is our war chest gone yet Wilkerson, our best home grown player on defense, remains a huge ? ? Is that why we spent our latest 1st round pick on Williams? Because the monies gone to sign Richardson too? I would rather Macc used more of the money to lock up players we KNOW are great and then continue to build through the draft. Did we really need to burn $24M of this years cap on Revis/Cromartie with so many holes on the team? We could have locked up Wilkerson AND Richardson long term, used our 1st round pick elsewhere, and let our current guys (Marcus Williams, Walls, Pryor, Milliner, McDougle) with a few FAs in Gilchrist & Skrine play out this season. Just another way to look at it.
WE had to spend the money per NFL rules... I do not recall your or in fact most peopl who post here complaining when he made the signings... just saying.
Mac inherited bad contracts and players He got duped by Mevi$ and Slowmartie for some big bucks But that was also because he wanted to wrk with his HC who insisted on two "shut down corners" to operate the blitz schemes. We all thought that was not a bad idea too. Otherwise he did pretty well in FA for us and was graded A for his draft. Of course, D Smith and some other players are not panning out yet. Mac has a long term vision for the Jets better than his predecessors IMO 3 year rebuild
Very true, I may have been elated when we signed Revis/Cro. But that's not really the point. None of us are the GM who needs to balance the future with the hear-and-now. I realize with a new HC, and playing in the NY market, it was very important to get off on the right foot. But if our 'rebuild' really is a 2-3 year process, then it may have been better in the long run to lock up our known talent and fill in the blanks as time marches on. Because now we have to do both. Find a way to sign Wilkerson now, Richardson soon, Pryor after that, Leonard Williams after that, AND find money to continue building the team in other areas. Having blown through $60M in two weeks, it would have been nice to have locked down at least ONE of our talents. But maybe finishing this season 8-8 was more important.
Of course I am, man, I'm mocking the guys that are always like that around this forum, like SHIT, SON give this FO some goddamn time, at the very least three seasons to Maccagnan. Three seasons is nothing for a GM but at least it should start to show some progress overall in the performance and talent on the roster. Some people need to stop acting retarded as my post says, complaining about not winning a fucking SB in his first year, I mean, jeez, better not even bother watching football if that's your mentality, go watch Desperate Housewives, don't you agree?
Some people here believe Mac's plan is to rebuild this team with youth while making it competitive right now with high priced veterans. But to me, that just sounds like wishful thinking. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The bottom line is, everything the Jets are doing now suggests building to win now and sacrificing the future. When pretty much every key guy you bring in in the offseason via a huge spending spree and trades is over 30, when you don't let your promising young guys play and develop, and instead play 30+ veterans over them, when you ruin your chances of high draft picks for mediocre seasons, what that clearly suggests to me is the front-office and ownership are not interested at all in building a championship contender, and are instead building a mediocre team to shut the whiny fans and media up.
Sort of my thinking too. I realize when a team fires everyone and brings in a new crew, it's good to get off on the right foot. So bringing in guys to 'win now' was a necessity (to a point). But when you drop $60M in 10 days and fail to lock up a single talented player under 30, I go hmmmmm. I get we HAD to spend the cash. But maybe Macc could have rolled the dice and locked up Mo AND Sheldon long term then use our #1 pick somewhere other than the d-line (trade for a QB maybe?). But who knows, maybe Revis and Cro will bounce back and be lock-down for the next 4 years.
You do know he isn't sacrificing the future though, right? Every contract was team friendly in terms of money, guaranteed was up front and not much so we could cut the veterans you're talking about without horrible repercussions in the salary cap, kinda opposite to the ones Tannenbaum loved.
Except for the Revis contract. The best and brightest math wizards of Buffalo NY have deduced that the Jets are in cap hell because of the Revis contract.
