is he cleaning up the mess though? who is our long term awsner at LT? who is our long term awnser at QB? Where is our pass rusher? Where is the money to pay mo/sheldon? from what i see all he did was throw tons of money at the secondary and trade for a 30+ year old WR to bandaid WR. those things arent necessarily bad, but all the problems we had last year are mostly still big question marks: no QB, no Pass rusher and some oline questions
He was also required to spend a large chunk of that money due to the salary cap floor. If you look at the way he structured most of the veteran contracts, there's also very little to no dead money after the second year. Long term answers at positions of need (QB/OL) weren't available in FA/Draft without destroying the value we'd get for them.
Mac provided good players which fit the systems. i was very impressed with his offseason. the coaching, and the players themselves, need to look in the mirror. We had 4 more days of preparation than Houston, an easy team to game plan for, and that is what they came up with? the players also had some terrible examples of execution. uninspired, non creative, lackluster efforts with sloppy execution. that's why we are losing.
Until we win the super bowl anyone we bring in will be considered a failure (according to this site) we can't develop offensive talent to save our lives we draft bust after bust after bust sure we hit once in a while but I play roulette often and I'm a degenerate... heck I hit more often at 35 to 1 than the Jets do on offense in the draft. So many young receivers are developing and contributing all over the league meanwhile we've got Hill, Saunders, Owusu, Smith and Evans to show for it Won't even mention our QB struggles Yates tore us a part off the street (wonder what Matt Flynn could have done if we held onto him) we should try and get Austin Davis in here and give him a shot. On the defensive side Dee can't stay healthy Coples is done...Gholston, WIlson etc bust after bust. Playoffs were a far fetched dream this year 8-8 was fair to expect... we exceeded expectations early and got everyone's hopes up we're a 500 team 9 win team at best. All that said the playoffs, though it looks rough right now after our annual losing streak is still possible we're right in the thick of things. yes we're screwed on most tie breakers but everyone else in the hunt lost this week (minus the Texans) if we go 4 and 2 the rest of the way which unlikely but is still possible we just might sneak into the playoffs. its hard to stay positive yes especially after the way we looked recently but we've got some positive things, though not many to look forward to.
This has been a problem seemingly forever. At least going back to Mangini. You would think that our main rival has a TE that kills you you'd invest in help over the middle but we always seem to ignore that aspect.
I wouldn't blame MacCagnan for what he does, because his actions are the result of fan/media actions last year (and Woody caving to them). But with that said, I think he is having a pretty terrible first year. However some people try to spin it, he definitely went for right now with the massive deals to aging veterans (Revis, Cromarties, Harris, etc), and just as importantly, with starting a 32 year old journeyman QB over a young guy with potential. That was already a mistake in my opinion, because that never gets you anywhere historically, but at least it can get you some temporary relief. Considering the kind of weak schedule we got this year, couple with how much money he had to spend and spent on free agent, and the high draft picks, playoffs seemed quite likely. After all, 2 years ago, we had much less talent and a similarly weak schedule, and finished 8-8. So if as it now looks, we finish out of the playoffs, this season will look very bad on his resume. But more importantly, by focusing on veterans his first year, we've got very little in terms of long-term talent infusion. Most of the impact guys he got us this year will be too old to contribute soon, so even if Mac gets some young talent in the future, as soon as he does, we will have new holes open up as these older guys retire/become bad. We are already seeing this with Revis, Cro. Pretty much every impact guy Mac has gotten in free agency/trades is over 30.
Man, I can't help but think when reading this post - that it's 2012 all over again and Stephen Hill drops an easy pass against the Pats to win the game.
No one wants to admit this, but it takes 3 consecutive years of solid drafting to become a consistently good team. Look at the Seahawks; they were a below average franchise that exploded onto the scene with 3 straight dominant years including 2 SB appearances and a win. How'd that happen? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't just Russell Wilson. It was great scouting and exemplary mid round drafting. Notable picks: 2010: R 1) Russell Okung R 1) Earl Thomas R 2) Golden Tate R 4) Walter Thurmond R 5) Kam Chancellor 2011: R 1) James Carpenter R 3) John Moffit R 5) Richard Sherman R 6) Byron Maxwell R 7) Malcolm Smith 2012: R 1) Bruce Irvin R 2) Bobby Wagner R 3) Russell Wilson R 7) J.R. Sweezy Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman, 2 of the top 3 players at their respective positions, were both 5th round draft picks. Where are our 5th round picks? On other teams' practice squads. Bobby Wagner is a top 3 ILB, picked in the second round. Their entire starting offensive line comes from mid-late round hits. Look at those drafts and tell me it was a surprise they got good in 2012. Mac couldn't get 3 years worth of drafts in 1 offseason, he could only use the picks in front of him. For the time being, all he could do was make the roster somewhat competitive through band-aid signings at positions of need. Luckily he was smart and made most of the contracts quick-outs so we aren't saddled for the next 4 years. This team wasn't going to be SB competitive this year (or spoiler alert: next year) with the putrid draft classes from the late Tanny/Idzik era. I'm not even going to post the drafts out of fear for getting censored for explicit content, just go look at what we did with those late round picks (fuck, even the 1st and 2nd rounders in some years). Late round picks aren't supposed to be things that you just use on random scrubs and throw away, they need to pan out sometimes.. Mac's quality as a GM won't be decided by the patchwork signings he made in order to ensure the team wasn't a laughing stock this year, it'll be determined by the success of Lorenzo Mauldin, Bryce Petty, Devin Smith, Jarvis Harrison and whomever he picks in those mid rounds in the next 2-3 seasons.
This isn't baseball, there is no longterm rebuild in the NFL anymore.Ask John Idzik how that went for him
No there is no rebuild of any type allowed in this media market. And I dont think Idzik should be the example for anything rebuild related. His problem was incompetence. And Im not even asking for a longterm rebuild. 2 years would've done the trick. Now its just gonna be year after year of fighting for 9-7 until maybe we hit the lottery and get an above average QB
My only problem with Mac is he ignored OL in 2015 draft (save 5th round pick Harrison who will never see the light of day). This organization just doesn't get it that when you draft primarily defense in the 1st three rounds every year, your offense will struggle. The jets OL now is not only old, it is no good. Chris Johnson is having a great year for Arizona running behind a great OL. The same Chris Johnson couldn't gain squat for us last year running behind primarily the same line struggling for the jets this year. At least he could have taken a flyer on Collins in the 7th round last year instead of Zac Stacy!
Remember a few weeks ago when this was like the only team people around the league thought could beat the Patriots? Like, we were that good/scary. To say a few weeks later the GM didn't bring enough talent when clearly the coaching staff is responsible for how this team has fallen off a cliff over that span, that's absurd. Macc did a good job, he got Bowled the guys he wanted, he did a good job period. I think we do have the right guys to make the playoffs, but you still have to play the best guys and coach them up properly and game plan properly. If you don't do that you end up sucking, like we do now. But if this was on Macc we never ever would have started out the way we did, being a top 3-5 power rank team after like what, 5 or 6 games. You're not at the top after 1/3 of the season and have a terrible team that doesn't have enough talent. That doesn't make sense.
AFAIK, after Collins slipped out of the first few rounds round due to legal issues, he and his agents declared he wouldn't play for any team who drafted him. The rationale behind the choice is explained here: http://mmqb.si.com/2015/05/15/lael-collins-nfl-draft-dallas-cowboys-murder-investigation "In Baton Rouge, Collins sweats out the second day of the draft while his agents unfurl a new plan. Rather than lobby for him to be drafted, they issue an ultimatum to teams: Draft La’el in the second or third rounds, or don’t draft him at all." There were multiple teams who likely would have picked him up as high as the 4th round without this.
The only acquistions I have questioned were getting Cro (who at least can be released after this year) and Devin Smith. I am a little concerned about our draft at this point, but Leonard Williams is still in the running for rookie of the year. You can't really argue with the draft if he does get it.
It's hard to blame a first year HC/GM tandem. Things dont always get fixed in one offseason. The offensive line needs to be rebuilt and they need to find a QB. Those things take time. Most people thought the Jets had enough talent to possibly win 9 games if things broke right. The hot start fooled people (myself included) into thinking the Jets were better than they really were.
I'm prepared to give him more than one off season. The team has improved, hopefully it will improve again next season. You can't address every issue in one offseason.
Mac can't play the game for them. He's done a hell of a job. The team has not produced. What do you want from him?
Macc was in a situation where he had to put bandaids on broken bones. If we have had him two years ago in the 2014 draft we'd be in the playoffs now. But we had Idzik and now we're up shit creek.
Idzik really messed with our fan base heads... Are we really discussing whether to blame the GM less than one season in??? Things aren't perfect.. Hell things aren't good right now but come on give this regime some time. Are we gonna start looking for a new coach and GM every year now? Does anyone even remember last year!?? The team was unwatchable at times. We are not a super bowl team, may not be a playoff team but we are better than we were last year with plenty of room for improvement. Give these guys time to bring players in and see what happens. I'm tired of the turn over around this franchise.. When they got rid of Herm Edwards I told my dad about it and he just sighed and I didn't get it cause I was so excited he was gone. My dad just looked at me and said "somebody's gotta stay ".. I never forgot that and now that's how I feel! I want this regime to be here for 10 years or more!!! I want stability! I refuse to turn on these guys. Win or lose this year let's build towards consistent success
