The safest pick around that time in the first round was David DeCastro. And guess what? ----- we needed an O-lineman.
I would've kept him as insurance in-case the Wilkerson situation didn't work out ... but oh well, best of luck to Coples I guess. Time to continue cleansing the roster.
I have to assume the Jets have been trying to trade him and found no takers. Btw for anyone wondering why Rex Ryan was fired, Coples may not be Exhibit 1, but he makes my top ten.
Time also to see what Mauldin can do. He's promising. This means for sure I won't have to waste another second speculating when/whether the 12 first round pick is going to live up to his potential. Answer is never.
Not at all. This is a classic public relations move designed to redirect attention away from the failing coach. Now the media will focus on how/why Coples failed and how that was a result of the previous management. Toilet Bowles gets the opportunity to "light" a fire under his under-performing team by cutting a guy who wasn't playing anyway. Mac gets to save $$$ on the salary cap without risking the injury guarantee for the remainder of this meaningless season.
I would've placed him back at his natural position. He did a solid job his rookie year accumulating 5.5 sacks as a DL, then they draft Sheldon the next year and it's been down hill since, it's a shame.
C'mon guys, we're all better than this. Coples got a lot of snaps early on and then his snaps declined week by week dwindling down to almost nothing. That's a clear sign that the coaches didn't like what they were seeing out of him on the field. With the guarantee in play the cut is no surprise at all. And yes, moving him to OLB was all Rex's idea and he probably was thinking about it when he drafted him. Coples said that Rex worked him out as an OLB at his Pro Day. Might have worked in a true 46 but you can't play a true 46 against Spread offenses and that's where the NFL is going now.
Exactly, the time is now to get the young guys all of the reps. Mauldin seems promising and I still want to see Reilly get more playing time. Yesterday's game, was completely about effort - it's a shame we don't have a young inside linebacker with potential on this roster to give playing time to. Demario should see the bench for the rest of the season.
The good teams in the league are all getting starter-star quality play from their 2012-2014 draft picks. Errr
Given your position being anti-Bowles, you make it sound so conspiratorial. But if you add in the Jets had probably been trying to move him and failed as related to the timing, what is wrong with making an example of Coples? And yes there really was no reason to risk Coples getting injured since he was not contributing. The timing probably did have something to do with it, but that doesn't mean it was the wrong move.
The whole idea of running just the 3-4 really messed up some of our prospects and draft strategy during the Rex Ryan era. Now the Jets are paying for it. Coples would've been good under the 4-3 alignment.
Davis seems to give up at least one big play every game with his awful pass coverage, and it's not like he's balancing it out in any other part of his game. I have no reason to think Reilly would be better, but it just makes me sick seeing Davis out there screwing up left and right. I would sit him as well.
