Yup, it is the danger of failing on so many high picks. It is unfair to expect every 1st and 2 second round pick to be a star, but a fans expectation of a hole being plugged is fair game for a player selected that high. The Jets are still trying to find the player that Gholston was drafted to be, same with Ducasse, Coples, Hill, etc. Hill's failure is the reason D. Smith was drafted, they're the same player. Granted, it's very early, but up to this point Smith is making it look like it may take more than 2 second round draft picks to fill the same hole - that's a major problem. Again, I am not calling Smith a bust at this point, I am more than willing to see what he can do after 2 full seasons. In fairness to Coples, had he been left at the position he was drafted to play based on his physical attributes, we're probably not even having this conversation...

little early to write off devin smith. wesley walker did squat his first year with the jets and then really got good year 2 and beyond. not saying smith = walker, just give him a full training camp (which he missed this year).

I think one of our fellow posters, NCjetsfan, pointed out his concern about the WR coach giving Smith too much too soon earlier in the year. Smith may have information overload, and that's why he is slow to develope, granted when he is asked to run go routes he seems to have a step on the defender and if the ball is thrown farther out by Fitz he probably would have better numbers.

That being said, when he is asked to do anything else, it seems he is just a bit off, I'm sure some of it is Fitz not having a lot of confidence in him right now but props to NCjets fan, he pointed out that the WR coach may be putting too much on his plate right now.

Sorry did not want to derail thread, as far as Coples is concerned, at this point it is what it is, do what you can with him and move on from Coples, I'm sure he will do well with the NY Giants because he is simply a 4-3 DE.

Mauldin looks like a natural out there and he is on his way to giving the jets the answer to the pass rushing OLB need.

Agreed RM, Mauldin looks like the real deal, give him Pace and Coples snaps

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I wouldn't trade Coples until he's tried at TE (6'-7", 280, fast) or at LEAST until the MoWilk situation clears up. Coples was drafted as a 3-4 D-lineman and only kicked outside by Sheldon.

With Mo's contract still up in the air and Sheldon one puff from losing a year, having Coples in reserve ain't horrible.

You think anyone would be dumb enough to say that before you?

Anybody see Richardson in 2pt stance (or just standing up) before the half. Muther fucker was coming at the line of scrimmage with steam. He tossed the Jacksonville running back into Bortles...we got to get him standing up more, coming with it.

Aye, coming out Smith was know as a one trick pony with promise. You factor in the guy missed a-lot of time early on and he was brought in for Geno's arm not Fitzy's. He's had a few targets but he's having to come back for the ball rather than catching it in stride. Something that seems like its new to him, but he should get in time. What will be telling is how much we see him used down the stretch. Unfortunately, the last few weeks he's been a ghost and Kenbrell has been getting more than his fair share of looks; so who knows.

Plus the other big guy is coming back from his 4 game suspension. That and Kerley stepping up takes 99% of the pressure for Devon to produce. Even if Devon was Devon he'd probably not be out there much. At least not with the Beard throwing his 15 yard hail marys.

Anyone find the article with this game's snap count yet, - because I don't think this bust ever saw the field on Sunday.

That's been my takeaway as well. I would need to go back and watch for Coples specifically, but every time I have ever noticed him making a difference on a play he was at DE. he experiment at LB was a desperate tempt to pound his square peg into our round needs hole. It didn't work, now put him back into position. Of course, the problem is that even with him playing LB we don't have enough people playing those positions.....

coples move to LB was an incredibly stupid move by Rex Ryan--playing your #1 draft pick out of position and then refusing to admit the error . I thought Bowles was smarter than Rex but apparently not--didn't Bowles watch any tape of Coples being invisible the last 2 years before he took over the jets?

Aaaaaand he's gone. WOW. Knew he was a goner after this year but I'm shocked the CS decided to dump him now.

Can't wait to see him Week 17..

I know the brand new GM & brand new CS didnt want to make any bold moves when the season started until they had time to evaluate personnel, but it would have been nice to try & put out some feelers as I would have gladly taken a 4th rounder in return.

It was a great move. Coples $7.8M was guaranteed for next year only in the event of injury. Better to cut him now before he tears his knee up in practice this year, and then the jets are on the hook for his whole salary next year.
