Running backwards to avoid pressure is always something that bothers me in a prospect but I've seen him step up through garbage enough times to think that he knows what he's doing. His first instinct is to correctly maneuver the pocket, then he retreats to throw the ball away if he sees that he's screwed. As opposed to Geno in college whose initial reaction to pressure was to use his athleticism to escape from the play. You can tell a lot about what a QB is all about from his very first movement in response to pressure, that instantaneous reaction. Most times Wentz' first move is towards the line of scrimmage which makes me confident that he can move through the pocket like an NFL QB, despite how worrisome it is to see him retreat for 10 yard sacks on occasion.
What about Sudfeld's brother at Indiana? Watched him saturday against Michigan and he looked pretty good to me. Scouting reports have him round 3 or 4. HE's a big kid, seems to have good pocket presence. Anyone else know much about him?
He has only started 22 games against FCS teams and has missed half this season, can he make to jump after that few games. Are they saying the wrist is healed and he is coming back for the playoffs or for the Senior bowl is he just hoping to be back? Would be good to see what he could do coming back in the playoffs, 2015 FCS Playoff Selection Show is Sunday at McNeese St.. NDSU's run ends this year though, no 5 in a row.
Paxton's played good defenses 2 weeks in a row and he's starting to look like he's a 1 read quarterback. That's no fun.
Btw Connor Cook out with the shoulder injury isn't going to help out his draft stock. But what's worse, the guy's at a 56% completion rate, his worst as a starting QB in college. He has not elevated his game as a senior and I don't know how anyone can consider him a high draft pick. _
Ok saw my third Goff game last night. I went in again trying to love the guy and I kind of just like him. Somebody needs to explain to me the hype (and not Todd McShay who was hyping him so much last night for a meh performance--he's got him as his second QB so he sounded like he had to defend him). I mean, he's a nice QB. He doesn't look to me like an elite pro prospect. 95% of his throws were within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, he missed some really easy throws, was bad in the red zone when the game was still in contention, I'm just not seeing it. I mean, he's got a nice arm and throws well to wide open guys but I'm not seeing massive arm talent like McShay kept droning on about, he looks a tad slight and not all that athletic. He looks like any other number of decent college QBs. He kind of reminds me a bit of Ryan Tannehill. Not somebody I'm going to break the bank over. I think it's fair to say that 2016 is NOT the year of the QBs. Hack out right blows, Cook looks like an inaccurate mediocre backup, Jones can't even get in the field, Goff doesn't look to me like he's got a high top end, Dak doesn't look like a QB, Kessler, Hogan meh, the only guy I haven't seen a lot is Lynch. You throw them all in a room and the guy I'm walking out with? Bryce Petty. _
Haven't seen enough of him to make an educated decision. I would have a hard time taking an FCS QB early but maybe he's a more athletic, more mobile version of Flacco so who knows? And if I'm true to myself, in order for me to take a guy very high, I had to have seen him play at a high level for at least 2 years and I'd never even heard about the guy before this year. Kind of the way I feel about Lynch too. As an example, I didn't know much about Mett before I saw him start throwing lasers his senior year. I don't think I would have taken him high that year but he was easily worth a 3rd, 4th or 5th rounder, I just couldn't have taken him with our 1st or 2nd. Having said that, if the brain trust sees an incredibly high ceiling (again, I haven't seen enough of either of them-Wentz or Lynch) and they grab one of them with our first rounder--I'll root like hell for them and hope the experts know what they are doing. _
David Shaw had his Cardinal team playing a bend-don't-break defense with their young CBs giving Goff everything underneath and that's why Cal racked up passing yardage between the 20's but settled for FGs once they got to the red zone (Goff did miss that 4th and 23 pass at the end). Overall Stanford was too physical for Cal in the trenches and could control the game with their OL and RB McCafferty.
Yeah they were playing very soft until Cal got in the RZ. I wasn't blown away by Goff. Haven't been all year. I know some guys here love the guy. _
I think you'll really like Wentz, he's your type (by that I just mean I've noticed you like guys who are really consistent on mid range throws- Carr, Teddy, etc) http://draftbreakdown.com/players/carson-wentz/ I'm starting to sour on Lynch a little bit. His offense looks just as gimmicky as Baylor's and he's not as productive as Petty was. Every throw is 3-5 yards. I know the same can be said about Goff but I still love him for his quick processing ability. He won't wow you with his arm strength but he shows great accuracy and anticipation of throwing windows and moves well to set up throwing lanes. I was a huge fan or Mariota's ability to acknowledge his first receiver is covered so quickly and move on, and Goff is comparable in that instant recognition. He'll be really good even if his upside is somewhat limited by arm strength.
I think people have been sleeping on Goff because he had a bad string of games. Before those games he was by far the most accurate QB in college in passes beyond 20 yards. Against Stanford he took what he could get. Whether he declares or stays another year (still a possibility, I hear he loves Cal Berkley).
The only issue I have with that theory is that maybe the competition he was playing before he started to falter wasn't as good. Now that he's hit the thick of his schedule and the competition has gotten better he's struggling more. I can't say that for a fact because most of his early games weren't televised here on the East coast but I've read that a few places. Do you remember how Geno was lighting it up against the James Madisons of the world? 6 and 7 TD passes a game and a Heisman hopeful? Once his completion stiffened no one mention the Heisman ever again. I'm not comparing him to Geno, he's much much better, and I like him. I'm just not all Teddy/Carr/Mariota on him. _
Where do you think he should go if drafted today? Based purely on your evaluation of his skills, skillet and future potential.
Where should he or where will he? This class IMHO is looking extremely thin and weak. No top tier guys like last year and not the quantity from 2014. I think he'll get over drafted but I wouldn't take him until late first or early second round. And even that might be a stretch. _
Would you rather him wait a year to get another year of in college or start developing him in the system early? Next year looking like the Kaaya and Kiel show.
I would love to see him stay another year. If he plays lights out, then you'd have an idea of who he's going to be in the NFL. Right now I have no clue as to how he's going to fare. I ideally like to see two years of high level play before I'll take a guy that high. _
