What IS our plan with Petty anyhow? I mean draft pending, I assume he's QB2 at the very least going into next year. We shouldn't be hiding him from game time as much as we did this year certainly…nor should we HAND him the starting job. I'm picturing a competition next year with a vet(14) playing incumbent starter. Petty would have outplay him to start. We need to see a sign, a spark of any kind from Petty next year, because we want to better gauge what our QB future looks like and what his role in it will be.
Can we end the pipe dream that Petty is ever gonna do more than hold a clipboard, and that Fitz is anything more than a stop gap? Draft or sign a real fucking QB
appreciate your opinion but I think Petty should be given real chance next summer at starting job--Fitzpatrick is NOT the future--Petty may or may not be but we'll never know if we keep playing Ryan next year.
I don't see as of now any attractive alternative Qb's in FA, which is exactly why Macc got Fitzpatrick last off season. He was the best available. the situation could change, but as of now is the market likely to be any better? Likely not. The other is if the FO wants to get aggressive on a possible trade. But of the people talked about as even vaguely in the realm of possibility last year, the fates of some of them so far presents a cautionary lesson. Some who moved and some who stayed put are having rough years, like Kaepernick and Foles (although at least some of Foles's problems seem attributable to a poor fit with their CS), some like Bradford have been underwhelming even if the jury is still out, and some were probably either not going anywhere in reality, like Rivers, or would have taken a very aggressive approach, like Cutler. But... some names seem more realistic as possible targets in the upcoming off season, like Stafford, and someone like Brees who people talked about last off season might be a more realistic target this winter. In the end, though, there may be no more attractive alternatives.
I dont see how Brees (even if he is traded) would ever think of coming here. I could see him heading over to Denver if Manning retires, but I dont think he would see the Jets as a final career destination. I think the front office will ditch Geno and bring in a young QB that has some NFL starts, but has fallen a bit. Someone like Mettenberger, or the kid from Tampa Bay.
Of course you bring him back. Unless Drew Brees or someone of that ilk becomes available, you bring Fitz back. If Petty proves to be the superior player, thats all the better. Than you have Fitz as a reliable backup QB. If Petty proves to be the 4th round pick that the draft indicated he was, than at least Fitz has proven to be an average starter. I'm not even 100% sure why this is even a question.
idk... i know it was just preseason but i haven't forgotten what i seen from Petty. He seems like he gets it. He scans the field quickly, that's what stood out to me the most. I didn't see any issues with him taking snaps under center.. I think he just needs experience and he'll at least be serviceable. I just don't see his floor as anything less than average.
I think it's okay to dream, but plans and such cannot be based only on dreams, so I think we can agree on that. I certainly agree the FO needs to do everything it reasonably can to upgrade the Qb position, and not pretend that we are set with Fitz to hold the fort and Petty as some certain franchise Qb. But not to quibble here, I don't think it's a certainty that Petty will never do anything more than hold a clipboard.
Totally fair observation. If he learns most of the playbook and the game slows down for him he could start next year. _
That would be great for us. Especially for our cap space. Getting good QB play without paying a franchise QB >>>>>>>>>
I focused on the names I did because we talked about them last off season. Obviously there are other alternatives. While I like the idea of someone younger than some of those I mentioned, I would hope any one like that would at least be really better than Fitzpatrick. Otherwise the Jets might be better off trying the draft coupled with continuing to develop Petty.
if we dont get brees, then fitz would probably be the best stop gap available but brees needs to be our offseason priority ... he will be a fa. the saints cant keep his $30 mill cap number on the books given their cap situation
Brees will be 37 in January. He is not a long term solution either. We'd probably be getting him right as he's ripe for a bigtime decline. Not saying he wouldn't be an immediate upgrade over Fitzpatrick...
The Saints would never trade Brees. He will retire a Saint, he means too much to that team and that community. The only way this would even be worth a possible mention is if Sean Payton gets fired. And even then, the owner would still want Brees around until he can't play anymore.
Interesting article by Peter King about what Carson Palmer does each week to prepare, very in debt preparation. You can see why when Palmer went down with injury why the other QB's looked like garbage. I bet Geno never preps like this and I can only hope Petty is this kind of QB. http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2015/11/17/nfl-carson-palmer-arizona-cardinals-inside-game-plan
Someone would have to carry Chad's jock because he was injured every few weeks. Fitzmagic damages some ligaments and keeps on trucking. Barring that one good juke by Chad against Buffalo, Fitzy's first down scrambles are hard to top. What's more Ryan Fitzpatrick's passer rating of 85.5 is the best of any Jets QB since 2004 that's started 9 or more games. Geno Smith 77.5 and 66.5 Mark Sanchez 66.9, 78.2, 75.3, 63 Brett Favre 81.0 Kellen Clemens 60.9 Chad Pennington 82.6 70.9 91.0
I think that Fitz should start next year, and let Petty continue to develop. Hopefully Petty will be our #2, and Geno will be gone.
Thanks for sharing that article. I am not a Peter King fan, but that was great insight. Affirms the thought that QB is more and more an older more mature man's game in todays NFL.
