This. Although Fitz has been the best QB we've had in a while. Sad as that is.

No, no, no.... Boat anchors are really quit useful. I think maybe Geno is a little more like ballast: useful rubbish to keep the ship going thru a rocky time but you just toss it overboard once it isn't needed as it serves no actual purpose.

EDIT: I think I may have tipped my hand about not liking Geno.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was (4-1) but now he is (5-4). Who knows what will happen the next 7 games, but that will 100% decide his 2016 fate.

There is a lot of time between 1 and 5 years and we don't need to wait that long IMHO. Otoh, I also don't believe that players always just arrive and succeed and waiting 2-3 years is reasonable for a QB. I could see Petty have a trajectory where he gets his first playing time next year and then competes in year 3. If he can't snag the job in year 3 then year 4 starts to become make or break. That basically means this year is just a learning year and next year you start to see what he has learned and how far he has come.

As an aside, I think by this time next year you'll have a good idea whether he has 'it' or not, even if he is still in need of some developing.

unfortunately unless we make a trade for someone we are stuck with what we have at the moment.

No qb in the draft is ready to be a NFL starter so its either hope petty wows next offseason or keeps fitz and no free agent qbs out there

He is 5-3, he barely played against Oakland.

A start is a start. 5-4. I don't know why you even posted that. Obviously I know he barely played.

It is NOT a win now team, if by that you mean the Jets will be going all in to win the SB. That's absurd. Just because Brick, Mangold, Harris and Revis are nearing the ends of their careers doesn't make it a "win now" team. IMO the QB is the determining factor in what makes a team a "win now" team. Unless Petty proves to be ready to play and is a revelation or Geno totally surprises (if he's still here), the Jets aren't going to have the QB to give them a realistic shot at getting to, much less winning, a SB. Mac is simply trying to be as competitive as possible while building the roster through the draft. If Petty develops quickly, can start next year and play at a high level, great, but unless Mac can somehow magically fill all their holes and upgrade the depth all over the roster in one more offseason, they will still have a lot of "issues," and will probably have a number of rookies starting at key positions.

Even if Milliner can get healthy, stay healthy and play at a high level, they need to replace Coples, Pace and Davis at LB. Snacks could very well be gone. Mo may be gone. Kerley may be gone. RG and RT need to be upgraded. We need better depth at LT and C. We need 2 TEs. We need at least one more quality RB, preferably one who is a good receiver and has the speed to take it to the house from anywhere on the field. We need a PR. We need a punter and maybe a kicker.

Remember that Fitz had one of his best years last year with the Texans and he wasn't playing in Gailey's system, so I disagree that the two are inseparable and it's all or nothing. Fitz can play in other systems.

Depends on how the season closes out. Playoffs gets him for say another two years. After the IK incident the only reason Geno is here because he's still under contract and they're using him to protect Petty.

Ideally, Petty is ready next year, which is unlikely. What will probably happen is we bring Fitz back for a year or two, move Petty up to QB2 so he can get some garbage time experience, Eugene QB3 or gone. Petty will know the system better than any other QB they bring in barring Geno, and were not even sure of that to be honest.

I'd like to draft another QB in the mid rounds this year/next as insurance if Petty doesn't show improvement. If Geno is still here we can wait another year, because Petty still might not see the field.

A lot of it depends on how the CS feel about Geno. I fully believe they value Petty over Geno, though.

IMO the jets #1 offseason priority is getting younger and better on the OL. It is old and not very good right now.

I've been saying for a year or two that the Jets need to add Brick's eventual successor. Colon probably won't be back. I think they may be able to move on from Giacomini, but even if not, they could certainly upgrade his position. They need to add better depth at C, if not find Mangold's eventual successor.

Those are definite priorities, but then so are QB (if they don't think Petty or Geno are going to be their QB of the future), pass-rushing OLB, ILB (replace Davis and find Harris' successor, and find one who can cover RBs and TEs), a fast RB with receiving skills, TE (even if Gailey doesn't use them that much), and possibly even CB if they don't think that Williams or Milliner can ably replace Cro.

Most accurate QB of all time. Say what you want about his arm (strength), but he was surgical and smart as hell. True leader and a great locker room guy as well. If we had prime Chad right now...well I'm not even going there. But we'd be WAY better off, probably unbeaten too. And I like Fitz, but comparing those two is like comparing Thomas Jones to Curtis Martin.

In today's press conference, when asked about Ryan Fitzpatrick returning next year, Mike Maccagnan said he thinks Fitzpatrick has lots of good football left in him. I tend to agree. I think if he cuts down on his risk taking, slides more he can be a decent player for the Jets for a few years as it looks for its future franchise guy.

The Daily News has learned that the Jets have not yet had exploratory discussions with Fitzpatrick’s camp to keep him around beyond 2015, but it makes perfect sense to initiate them now.

He has been a gift from Maccagnan’s buddies in Houston and a “good grounding force in our locker room,” according to the rookie GM.

I don't have a horse in the race, but I predict Fitz lasts longer than your avatar.

The Jets definitely need to plan for a new offensive line.

If Mangold retired next year the Jets would be grasping at straws. With his neck injury I would say the odds on a sudden Mangold retirement before his natural time are probably close to 50/50 at this point.

We agree to disagree. This team as presently constructed is a franchise QB away from SB contention. That's a win now team with a huge missing piece. The window for this team as a serious contender even with a guy like Brees is very small (imo 2 years tops), as we know there is tremendous age on the OL and its been largely ignored or patched through FA. The OL draft picks have not panned out while here. Some have done okay since moving on (Ducasse and Slauson with Chi). There is also age on the defense everywhere except the DL and Marshall isn't getting any younger either.

Its just a projection but Fitzy is on pace for:

    4000 yards, 30TDs and 18 INTs

    Wouldnt you all take that?
