Yeah but each QB selected is a lotto ticket to the Super Bowl and having 2 tickets is better than 1. At least pick someone in the later rounds that the scounting department feels is being overlooked.
Has a player ever come back from thumb surgery and played the next week.... I think Bowles said a few prayers last night!
How about 1 more year? I think that is sufficient enough for Petty to learn. Its sink or swim at that point.
I am as hopeful as anyone here that Petty will be the man going forward, and there have been inklings here and there that he could be. But there's absolutely nothing so far to give us confidence he will be. Even on the notion of his being a project, the question will be is he the right project? Imo on the overall what to do at Qb question Smith has to be gone and that is not even worth discussing. So they keep Fitzpatrick, the question being in what role? There are of course in general two alternatives going forward, which is either a vet Qb in a trade or FA, or a rookie in the draft. How about both? Imo the Jets should start camp with four Qb's. Fitz and Petty, but also the best rookie they can draft, who then goes into camp, and in effect he competes with Petty to show who should be the best project going forward. There is nothing we know so far about Petty to establish that he is going to win such a competition. So why not give him some competition, and let the best project win. To be clear what should be done with the loser of such a competition is not pre-determined. Maybe he goes to the practice squad... Meanwhile the Jets should be active trying to upgrade at starter, if possible. (In other words, Fitz imo has earned the right to come back and be in that mix, but he has not done enough to show the Jets that they should not not at least try to upgrade the position.) If they can't upgrade, Fitz becomse the starter again, and imo the Jets try and find a vet to be his backup. Then they determine whether whoever they can get will play better than Petty or the rookie chosen in the draft as the #2 Qb on the depth chart. I think this is what will happen. In effect enter camp with four qb's, and see how it plays out.
I see no reason not to. Best case scenario, he's a backup for a better younger QB. Worst case scenario, he starts, and he's still our best QB since Favre lol.
The Fitz question also raises the Gailey question. I wasn't a fan of the Gailey hiring and I'm not impressed at all with his "system". He's better than MM and Sparano but what is that really saying? Without Fitz to run Gailey's system, what good is it? Without Gailey's system, what good is Fitz? The two things are inseparable so its all or nothing. I would like to think Petty is learning the basics of playing Qb by watching but at some point, they're gonna have to play the kid in a real game to see just where he is on the Qb capability chart.
Enough of these asinine threads questioning Fitzpatratic and just stop it with fucking Geno smith. There is a complete dearth of high end QBs in this world as evidnenced by more than half the league. When you have someone servicible as Fitzpatrick is, you keep him around until someone better becomes available - AND THAT MIGHT NOT HAPPEN EVEN IN 2017. Fitzpatrick plays hard, is smart (most of the time) and might be the best QB we've had since Vinny if he can play the whole season. Favre was only himself for half a season and Pennington was a noodle armed choir boy. Yes if Petty could replace him in 2017 that would be freaking great, but there is no guarantee he will ever be starting material.
Fitz couldn't carry chads jock and its not even close. Don't let his last year here distort your memory
Fitz has a history of fading down the stretch, but he also has a history of playing behind bad o-lines and getting sacked/killed (58 sacks his 2 yrs in Buff). Our o-line has done a good job of keeping Fitz safe and upright, so that excuse will be gone. Macc will no doubt want to see Fitz keep it going for 16+ games. If he can, then Fitz will be back next year as our incumbent starter.
Fitzpatrick should be on this team next year if we cannot get a improvement. Geno Smith will be gone as fast as Mac wills it. Petty needs to be groomed and then we figure out if we can reel in a star QB...Which is almost impossible...
Watching Geno play this season really sold me on Fitz as a viable starter. He's leagues better than anybody on our roster, even if he's somewhere in the range of 15-20 relative to the other starting QBs in the league. He has pocket presence and gives targets to our playmakers. No, he can't throw a deep ball but he can throw a fastball on an intermediate route. He's decent, and that's better than the trash elsewhere on our roster. He's playing better than Kaepernick or Stafford, both of whom I think are less than mediocre.
If his health allows, then yes, bring him back. I think that an organization gives itself the better chance of success if there's a quality veteran QB that's still capable of playing to bring the younger guy, like Petty, along. Not a Brunnel or Garrard type who were finished and couldn't push Mark or Geno for PT. Again, assuming nothing career-threatening happens to him before January, Fitz has done nothing up to this point to prove that he can't play at least one more year. Draft another QB if there's somebody they fall in love with and let Petty be the #2 next season and hope that he's ready by 2017 for the #1 spot.
Keeping Gailey around is essential to Petty being useful. He's had to work really hard just to get a working grasp of this offense, we'd really be setting him back by throwing a completely different one at him before he ever hits the field.
