Depends on how the season plays out. If he can stay healthy and we win and make the playoffs then yes you have to bring him back.
The answer here depends on a number of variables, perhaps at least in theory the one that is most significant is the possibility of obtaining a different and better Qb in FA or a trade. But even if the Jets go high draft pick at Qb in the next draft, Petty and that pick will need to be supplemented by a vet Qb, imo. To be clear the Jets absolutely cannot depend on Petty to be next year's starter. And it is quite unlikely the Jets will draft a Qb who would then become the starter as a rookie (imo no Winstons or Mariotas are likely to fall to them). But we can't rule out obtaining a better Vet, which might be the most realistic chance to improve the Jets. Short of that, and if instead the option in effect becomes developing Petty, then they will bring Fitz back to hold hte fort.
Even if Petty looks good and we use a high draft pick on another guy next year we still need 3 QBs. Even if you think that Geno has anything to offer he is an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign anywhere else unless we use the transition or franchise tag (either is highly unlikely). Unless Fitz suffers some severe or lingering injury I do not see why we would not bring him back.
Fitz has played well this season, but it comes down to three primary factors: 1) How things pan out the rest of the season 2) The probability that the Jets can get someone better in free agency (or, perhaps, through a trade) 3) Whether or not the Jets think Petty is ready to take the reigns. (If, in fact, they envision him as possibly being their guy down the road)
Gotta dump Geno. With Fitz' penchant for getting injured and Petty being so green, we'll need 2 veterans on the roster for at least the first quarter of the season. And no, Geno doesn't qualify as a veteran. Because he always plays like a rookie.
Obviously ,we bring him back no matter what ...even if we have our QB of the future on our roster somehow, we still bring Fitz back .He would be the best backup in the league ,btw we cut Geno and end that sad era
If Sean Payton leaves and the make Brees available I'm all for it. This is a win now team that is just missing the franchise QB to challenge for a deep playoff run. If he's not available I don't really see any other win now types of QB's that can take this team to the next level so I'd be willing to bring back Fitz. The troubling part of this team is by the time a YOUNG franchise QB is found many of the star players on the Jets will be out of the league. Such is the circle of life when you can't seem to find the right QB.
Yeah and to me there are no prospects in the draft that can step in next year and be a solid starter. If we can get Brees and maybe draft a guy in the 2nd round to pair with Petty then I think thats the best case scenario. Then in 2 years when Brees is done we will have 2 young QB's that sat and learned behind a HOF'er to battle it out while the other can be a solid backup. Could be a pipedream. Most likely is. And those 2 QB's might not end up being anything special like many of Rodgers and Brady's backups havent. But I would like that type of plan from the team because like you said , none of em are getting younger. If we can rock out for the next 2 years I'll take a 3-4 year rebuild after that. Atleast it'll show me something.
Ask this question after the Jets finish 7-9. We have seen the best of what we are going to get from Fitz, it hasn't been great and I would wager it is going to get a lot worse.
I think he can be brought back either way, but how the remaining games play out will probably determine whether he is going to head into training camp as the starter.
Fitz is what he is. I don't think it will get worse, I do think it will stay the way it is and it's not good enough to compete. But if we can get him for a song that includes starter incentives, he's probably a top 3 backup QB. A backup that can come in and legitimately win a game is pretty valuable in this league.
Regardless if Fitz is back next year, I think the jets would be wise to give Petty a long look. Draft some quality OL next year, give Petty a chance, and maybe, just maybe, the jets start building a foundation. If Petty doesn't work out, journeymen like Fitz can always be found.
I'd bring him back to be the backup QB. He's shown he can win games and can help teach Petty on and off of the field.
Well, we still have Geno under contract for 2016; I think it depends on what older bad QBs are available. Geno Smith is terrible, so even bad is an upgrade. What would upset me would be if we cut Geno and then signed a different terrible QB - we need to set our sights on "bad or better" for the backup role.
Of course you keep him. At this stage he should compete for the starting job in 2016. If the offense improves a bit, and they make the playoffs and win a game or two, he can be slotted in as the 2016 starter but with a short leash. He has been pretty consistent this year and has moved the ball, been fairly efficient and scored TD's. I think as more of the younger guys get acclimated to the offensive system Fitz' numbers can improve. I think the league is becoming geared towards older, more experienced QB's anyway. Look at the league leaders... older guys like Carson Palmer, Brady, Brees, Eli, and Rivers are the guys having success. It seems that the ability to read a defense and get the ball out quickly is becoming more and more important. Scrambling ability and athleticism less so. So it may be best for the Jets to just keep working on Fitz. Give him more weapons (a TE? a scat back RB?) Besides, there has been alot of dogshit QB play this year. Foles just got benched for Case Keenum, Bradford blows, Stafford sucks, future franchise QB's like Luck and Wilson haven't been lighting the world on fire. Peyton Manning is injured and might be done. It really is a crap shoot. So maybe Fitz is the best guy the Jets can get under the circumstances.
