Simple question, the man is a free agent, do ya want him back on the team and why? My answer is yes, if the demands are reasonable. Fitzpatrick has proven himself to be a worthy stopgap at QB. He is not THE answer, he is not a franchise QB, he is the kind of guy you get when you're in waiting. Petty may or may not be the answer, Geno's a wild card at best, and acquiring another high profile prospect is not out of the range of possibility. But no matter what longterm solution we ultimately commit to, we need experience and leadership at QB, we need a vet and we've got an excellent value one on our roster right, adjusted and accustomed to how we operate. Other options at QB may include vets like Kaepernick looking for a second chance. such a move would be very committal and costly We should be able to fit him under the salary cap if any number of options to give us space are taken. (Cut Cro/Coples for 15 million, restructure Ferguson, etc) Really his value is something closer to what McCown, Henne, and Sanchez have gotten. Those deals have been written to include about 4-6 million gtd with incentives for more in the event that they earn starting time and playoff success. Basically they are well paid backups who get a chance to be averagely paid starters if the situation demanded it. After all he's not exactly earned the kind of contract other top vets like B Roth, or Rivers have earned. If all goes well he's a very good backup for Petty or someone else in the draft. I for some reason like making contracts so here goes: 2 Years, 10 million, 6 million guaranteed, 3 million dollar signing bonus 2016: 3.75 million base salary (3 mil gtd), 1.5 mil prorated, cap hit: 5.25 million 2017: 3.25 million base salary (0 gtd), 1.5 mil prorated, cap hit: 4.75 million regular season starting bonuses either year: over 25% snaps taken: 250K over 50% snaps taken: 500k over 75% snaps taken: 750k over 75% snaps taken +10 or more wins: 1 million playoff bonuses either year: more than 35% snaps taken on a wild card win: 500k more than 35% snaps taken on a divisional win: 750k more than 35% snaps taken on a championship win: 1 million more than 35% snaps taken on a super bowl win: 1.5 million
Well, right now the Jets have one NFL QB on the roster. Until they find another bringing Ryan Fitzpatrick back at a reasonable price seems like a no-brainer. The Jets are one of the few, maybe the only, NFL teams that would go into camp next year with Fitzpatrick as the presumed starter. That alone should be enough to assure that his price is reasonable in the off-season.
Depends on what else is available out there. Kaepernick like you mentioned could be there but I think that would be a terrible way to go. Brees also could be made available. Stafford too. The draft is also considered deep at QB even though I dont really like many of the prospects in there. Bottom line is , with our roster , if Brees becomes available you gotta do w/e it takes to get him and go balls out the next 2 seasons to try to win Superbowl.
If we make the playoffs we bring him back, if we miss he goes. It will be 11 years for him not making the playoffs and no reason to think a 12th will be different. He is showing what he is and i would rather be bad while looking for the franchise than spin our wheels being 7-9 Some will kill this, flame away
If you keep winning with Fitz it will be hard to give him up. If he is so so going forward then you look elsewhere. Petty could be your future but a veteran will presumably take you into playoffs or SB Too many ifs here. wait till Season is over first
"Bring him back" next year in terms of keeping him on the Jets roster???.... absolutely. I think they should hold onto him no matter what because at the very least they have a good backup QB in Fitzpatrick. He'd be a great backup because he's always prepared, he's at least capable on the field and he's a good teammate. "Bring him back" next year in terms of keeping him as the established starting QB?.............. no I wouldn't do that. How the rest of the season plays out will determine where he should stand in a competition in the offseason but no matter what they should be looking to upgrade at starting QB
Yes, first off Geno's days as a Jet are numbered. It's clear at this point they don't want to put him back out there unless they absolutely have to. Secondly I feel like they will give Petty all the time he needs to improve enough to become a competent pro; this is a big plus in my book. There is also the possibility we pick up a QB with our 1st next season. In any scenario I think Fitz should be a hold over unless he wants a ton of money.
Please god no...draft a fucking quarterback...Unless we're stoked for another 7-9 or 8-8 season then by all means bring him back
I mean I guess but I hate that he is turning us into a treadmill team. I don't know what other answer we have. The coaching staff is more comfortable going with Fitz than the more erratic Geno. Would an 8-8 finish and no playoffs change that? Doubtful. Our pick will be in the high teens/low 20s so not sure we can count on getting a bigtime prospect in the draft. Any QB available in FA will be severely flawed. It's frustrating to me because it is hard to be bullish about our future right now with the QB situation. Better hope Petty miraculously develops.
If Fitzpatrick keeps playing the way he has, and gets the Jets to the playoffs, I would not be surprised if he gets close to 10M per yr from a team. Teams are so desperate for QBs. I mean McCown got 14M per year
Close to $10M a year is the going rate for a starting QB. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets brought him back at 2 years and $20M counting incentives. This assuming they make the playoffs with him this year. The incentives would be for making the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl. Maybe a $8M guarantee in 2016 that can go to $10M if the Jets win the Super Bowl and triggers another $8M guarantee in 2017 if they make the playoffs again, with another $2M incentive for winning the Super Bowl.
We cant just roll with a rookie though, right? need some kind of vet at the position. If not Fitz than who?
If the Jets are going to roll with a rookie at QB next year, or Petty, they should draft heavily on the offensive side of the ball to reinforce the move. Draft a couple of OL and a TE and maybe a RB also to give the guy some tools to grow with. No more out of sequencing with a young QB and a veteran team and the fallout that creates when the vets go away.
10 million? I can't see that. We should keep him around even if he backs up Petty. Having a smart mature qb is never a bad thing...plus the team seems to like and respect him.
Thats what I'm thinking. I based my projections on what Henne, McCown and sanchez have gotten, take a look at the details on those deals. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/josh-mccown/ http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/chad-henne/ http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/mark-sanchez/ I think thats what it would take to bring him back.
