It wouldn't be the massive undertaking you think it would be to make public universities free for those accepted. Honestly, you could do it without raising taxes. Sounds crazy I know but you gotta understand how fucked the system is right now to appreciate this. Here's just 2 reasons why.

    1) Endowment. Consider the University of Texas. (not to single them out because most flagship public U's are like this but..) Because of alumni donations/investments the public- University of Texas has a $25.4 BILLION endowment... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...xas-endowment-tops-25-billion-surpassing-yale
$25.4 Billion dollars they keep under lock and key while they charge in-state Texas residents around $21,000 in room and board annually.(double for out of state)
    http://www.utexas.edu/tuition/costs.html
Why do they do that? because the gov't guarantees student loans. The govt subsidizes them. But mostly because THEY CAN.

honestly- that should be criminal. Private Universities don't wanna dip into their savings account, that's fine, I guess they are private, but public universities should be forced to use the money that people donate on the actual kids that its supposed to be for. Along with taxpayers' dollars.

What is funny is that private universities are actually ahead of public in that regard. Most Ivy League schools like Harvard are already free for middle/upper middle class students because they distribute their endowment. Getting accepted is another story but if little Not Satoshi Jr. got accepted in Harvard- he's going for free.

    2) We are already paying for it.
What the federal government spends annually on student aid initiatives: subsidized loans, pell grants, etc. is around $77 billion. That alone is enough to pay for the public tuition bill for every college kid in America! A simple re-allocation could get it done. Now there would be some losers there. No more tuition support for most private universities mainly (like I mention my small private university would have to close up shop) Dierking was dead on about the guaranteeing loans so kids could go to their ivory tower private university, etc . But that alone could get it done and because of point 1- endowment, some private universities would be just fine.

and you know- colleges could cut back on spending a little too...

    --------------
Here is why its NOT happening.

    1) The banks have government leaders in their back pocket. Go figure, the banks like having an enormous block of 18 year olds every year signing onto the dotted line of massive long term loans. They convinced the gov't to subsidize them, support them, and guarantee them. They even convinced govt officials to not allow people to declare bankruptcy on them.

if our government leaders grew a ball sack and said enough is enough, i'd rather look out for the best interests of the american public and see if we can make public universities free the banks would destroy them.

    2) Colleges themselves are getting greedy. Because they know students will get these government loans they just raise and raise tuition. The average University president today makes outrageous money compared to what university presidents of the past have.

It has also created an arms race of sorts. Instead of using endowment donations to pay for kids to go to their school they are building massive bullshit just to stand out from other universities, public and private. They raise and raise tuition and build new shit so people choose them anyway. And Sadly, I'm not talking about chemistry labs that could at least be justified. Look at this bullshit:

^no- that's not the White Sands Resort that's Louisiana State University's proposed $85 million "leisure pool." A public institution of higher learning spending $85 fuckin million on a goddamned pool alone, while they charged over $25,000 in tuition. I wish LSU was the only one with something like this but nope- they are just trying to keep up with the jones'. fuckin sad

That's for 1 semester but it includes a debit for a $3000 scholarship but a $7400 charge for the Study Abroad Program. He's going to Florence in the Spring.

Syracuse is about $50k a year.

No, it's about $42k a year. Expensive but not as much as Syracuse.

that paragraph wouldn't be there if you never made the remark in the first place. And the rate I pay here for in-state is around the same for every other state school for their in-state tuition rate. SO do some fucking research before you run your big fucken mouth again. Im sorry that you have so much debt to pay off for your degree that could have been earned at a stats school for 75% cheaper and equal value. That would piss me off too, but then again going to college is a choice and you have no one else to blame but yourself.

    So again, go fuck yourself.
